The tragic deaths of best friends Joseph Michaels (34) and Denzil Mentoor (45) brings the total number of deaths caused by fires to seven this year. It is believed the fire started at 03:00. Residents of the small informal settlement reportedly woke up to screams for help from the “inseparable” friends. But there was nothing the close-knit com- munity could do to save the men as the door to the wooden structure had been bolted shut with a chain and padlock. Wishing all our Muslim clients and staff well over the month of RamadaanMASSIVEWAREHOUSE CLEARANCE
Remembering your spiritRemembering your spiritDear reader,
We are well into the firstweek of Ramadan, a holymonth during which Muslimsthroughout the world go with-out food, drinkandphysical in-timacies from sunrise to sun-set.
The month is spent perform-ing extra prayers (Taraweeh),remaining spiritually contem-plative and repentant, andshowing empathy and charitytowards those less privileged.
Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islamand is known for its spiritual and health ben-efits.
Those who have fasted for many years willknowhowtestinga journey it canbe. Forego-ing food and drink is the easier part.
Remaining steadfast in your spiritual re-solve and resisting provocation is the hardpart. It is especially trying when, in additionto the usual demands of your professionaland personal life, you are faced with extrachallenges.
The beauty of being in a state of fastingthough is that your body and mind automati-cally transcends base urges and, even if youwanted to lash out in anger at someone whohas annoyed you, you invariably find your-self unable to.
Usually by the end of Ramadan, Muslimsfeel sad for a host of reasons.
Some regret not optimising the spiritualgrowth opportunity, others feel a sense ofloss of the unity experienced, and many un-dertake to uphold the practices of kindnessand sharing.
My challenge as I progress through thismonth, will be to act selflessly and containmy emotions as I brace myself for one of thetoughest challenges of my life; that of lettingthe little boy who has known me as his moth-er for five of his six years learn that he hasanother mother.
Two weeks ago, my foster son’s life wasturned upside down when he met his birthmother, whom he hadn’t seen in four years.
She took him one side and quietly told himthat she was his real mother and wanted to
take him home with her.He protested by drawing a
picture of me, complete withlong hair – as opposed to hershort hair – and then showingher who his mother is.
To her telling him that thename he is known by was nothis name, he promptly wrotedown the five letters of hisname. Although I was angry atthe bad timing, I was veryproud of my son for standinghis ground and asserting hisidentity.
I was also proud of his confidence; andability to spell and draw.
Sadly, he was traumatised after this meet-ing, constantly expressing his fear at beingtaken away from his home and parents.
Through mutual agreement, a series ofregular visits aimed at reuniting my sonwith his biological family has been sched-uled, with the first one meant to have takenplace today.
I was relieved when the social worker in-formed me yesterday that the visit had beencancelled.
But I know that future interactions are in-evitable and that I cannot control the proc-esses that may stem from them.
What I can do is protect my son from hurt, remind all parties concerned that decisionsshould be made in his, not the adults’ bestinterests and continue to provide a safe, lov-ing home for him.
In a perfect world, I would have protectedmy son from some of his life truths, but asthe older and responsible one, I know thatlife seldom goes according to plan.
As I look forward to Ramadan and thepeace and strength it will bring me, I am alsoaware that it will be a crucial time for meto choose the correct responses to influencea positive outcome for the child entrusted tome.

Headache overwater accountLUZUKO ZINI
INORDINATELY high water bills haveraised a red flag for a Lotus River resi-dent.
And payments made are not being reflect-ed on subsequent accounts.
Brad Leslie, of Gardenia Lane, says he be-lieves inconsistent water metre readings areat fault.
It has left him questioning the councilabout his water account.
“The bill I receive every month does notcorrespond with my usage,” Leslie says.
He adds the slow or non-response from thecouncil office is making things hard for himas, he says, he is paying more for water billsthan he believes he should.
“I have raised the issue with people fromthe City of Cape Town where our councillorLeslie Isaacs was also present. That’s whenthe council sent people to check my watermetre. They said nothing is wrong eventhough I get a huge bill at the end of themonth,” he says.
Leslie believes his rights have been viola-ted.
“Even though I have access to water, myrights have been violated because I have topay large sums for services which are not upto standard,” he says.
Another Lotus River resident, who spoketo People’s Post on condition of anonymity, says he, too, is experiencing the same prob-lem.
“I have the same problem. For the sixyears I have been living here my bill was R75in the first month,” he says, adding he haspaid this and other accounts, but theseamounts are not reflected on later bills.
He adds: “Last year I had to make a loanbecause the (accumulated) bill was R21 000.In six years my bill amounted to R21 000 eventhough I don’t use huge amounts of water. In some instances the bill will be low and thenext month it can double.
“The City gives us six kilolitres of watera month (for free) and my family of five peo-
ple uses about 15 to 17 kilolitres. The billwould come out saying we have used 53 kilo-litres,” he says.
The resident continues to say that the offi-cials who read water metres “just estimate”instead of giving accurate readings.
“My wife is home because she is unem-ployed and can testify that no-one has cometo our house for water metre readings. Yetwe get a bill telling us how much water wehave used,” he says, adding they have a highfence.
“I have gone as far as getting someone tocheck if there were any leaks and they didnot find anything. Until this day I have notbeen able to find out why my bill is so high.”
Lotus River ward councillor Leslie Isaacssays a number of meetings have taken placeregarding the water metre saga – but to noavail.
“I have been aware of Brad Leslie’s prob-lem and various meetings have taken placewhere we tried to resolve the problem, butwe have not come to a solution,” he says.
Isaacs says part of the reason there hasbeen no progress is because Leslie refuses tohave his water metre tested.
“(Leslie’s) old metre was removed and anew one was installed. At one of our meet-ings a suggestion of testing the old water me-tre was made and (Leslie) opposed that,”Isaacs says.
Leslie explains why he opposed the idea ofhis old metre being tested.
“They want to test if I did not tamper withthe metre. My only problem is I don’t knowhow the testing will be done and don’t havea guarantee that their findings will be accu-rate,” he says.
Leslie allegeshehasbeenexperiencing theproblem for some years now.
“I have been experiencing this problem forthe past six years and to this day nothing hasbeen resolved.
“Last September my bill was about R80and today it is R12 000,” he says.
He says he has stopped making paymentsas these are not reflected on his water ac-count.

End in sight to gang war?LUZUKO ZINI
A ‘PEACE deal’ believed to have beenstruck between rival gangs in LavenderHill has been met with mixed emotionsfrom the community.
Yesterday the com-munity of LavenderHill heard news of adeal between rivalgangs – Junky FunkyKids, Mongrels andCorner Boys – whichcould see the end of gang wars and senselesskillings. The gang wars, believed to be overdrug turf, have riddled the communities ofLavender Hill, Steenberg and Seawinds since2010.
Steenberg Community Police ForumChairperson (CPF) Kevin Southgate believesthis treaty is a positive sign.
“From what I know the initiative to get thegang leaders to talk and try to resolve theirdifferences was organised by religious stake-holders. This is great because things can getbetter,” he says.
Southgate adds this is not the first time anagreement of this nature has been reached.
However, he remains sceptical.“We have been down this road before
where the gangsters say they have madepeace and a couple of weeks later things goback to the way they were,” he says.
Proportional representative councillorLlewellyn Jordaan believes the gangstersneed guidance to make better choices.
“There was mediation between the rivalgangs and after the two weeks of negotiationthey finally agreed to meet. They need oursupport so they can change,” he comments.
“The gangs need to own up and accept re-sponsibility by apologising to the communi-ty, even though that may not bring backthose who have died.”
Southgate says this may be part of thegangs’ strategic plan to shift focus.
“In December we had this sort of deal beingmade and in February the killings beganagain. I hope this (treaty) will last and every-one will stick to what they promised, so that
we can have a bet-ter future,” hesays.
“I support theseinitiatives,” hesays “because theywill bring changeso that we can at
least live in safer communities.”Pastor Peter Solomons from Lavender Hill
believes it may take a while before things are
sorted.“An agreement between rival gangs has
been reached and we, as community leaders, understand things may take time, but this isa step in the right direction,” he says.
Southgate says the Steenberg CPF did notattend the “peace agreement” signing.
“We, as the CPF, were not mandated by thecommunity to attend. Our policy, as the CPF,is to establish and maintain relationshipswith the police and help create safety,” hesays. “Even though we may not have attend-ed meetings, we support the attempts madeto make a difference.”
People’s Post attempted to gain commentfrom Steenberg police, but was unable to doso at the time of going to print.

LOSING his sight has helped ablind man envision – and act upon– knowing his rights.
Sergil January, of the League ofFriends of the Blind (Lofob), says:“When I could see, I was blind, butnow that I’mphysically blind I can seea better future ahead of me.”
January’s improved understand-ing comes after receiving booklets –in Braille – from the provincial jus-tice department on Wednesday.
Lofob Executive Director PhillipBam says the booklets will motivateblind people to know their rights andbe able to access the laws of the coun-try.
“The booklets from the departmentare about domestic abuse and chil-dren’s rights,” says Bam. “Thesebooklets will make information ac-cessible to blind people and that willmotivate them.”
A shooting incident left Januarywithout sight.
“I became blind after being shot inthe head in 2006,” he says.
“I was at a friend’s house in CafdaVillage when three people knocked onthe door. When we asked who theywere, they did not say. They just saidthey were looking for someone.”
January says they “started shoot-ing after we refused to open the door.I was then shot in the head”.
Bam also says Lofob will be team-ing up with the justice department to
make the law accessible to the blind.“We will be working closely with
them so that (knowledge of) every lawin this country is available to theblind,” he says.
Armed with this new resource, Jan-uary says he now feels like a “normalperson”.
“Now that Braille booklets areavailable and we will get to know ourrights blind people can finally betreated as normal people,” he says.
The booklets were handed over onMandela Day and Lofob pre-schoolerswere also present at the function.
Bam says the event tied in withMandela Day celebrations. “We hadcake and the children from our pre-school sang ‘happy birthday’ to theformer president,” Bam says.

We wish all our Muslim clientsa Ramadaan Mubarak!
RAMADANis theninthandholiestmonthof the Muslim lunar calendar.
For those 29 or 30 days, Muslims, as a spirit-ual exercise designed to bring them closer toGod through contemplation and humility, but not without joy and festivities, are re-quired to abstain from food, drink and sex ofany sort during daylight hours.
They may indulge in all three at night.
Ramadan is in Islam what Thanksgiving isin the United States – an extended occasionfor socialising, celebrating and loving.
Ramadan is one of the five pillars, or essen-tial practices, of Islam. The fasting rule isflexible. Children, the infirm, the sick, preg-nant women and sometimes even travellersare not required to fast. There’s also the mat-ter of logic. For example, what would a scien-tist working in the Arctic or the Antarctic –
where, depending on the season, the sun mayneither set nor rise at all – be required to do?
Also, what would a traveller jetting fromone end of the globe to the other, hurdlingtime zones while outlasting the sun’s normalrhythm for 24 hours, be required to do?
In either case, Islam is not obtuse. The practising Muslim would fast in ac-
cordance with a clock they set realistically, perhaps in line with the rising and setting
sun on Mecca time.Ramadan does not fall on a specific date on
the Gregorian, or Western, calendar.Nor is it determined scientifically, but by
clerics’ observation, through the naked eye,of the first sliver of thenewmoonon theninthmonth of the Islamic calendar. That meansRamadan in Algeria could begin a day earlieror later than Ramadan in Oman.

Understanding the holy month of Ramadan
CHARITY is very important in Islam, and even more so during Ramadan.
Zakat, often translated as “the poorrate”, is obligatory as one of the pillarsof Islam; a fixed percentage required tobe given by those with savings.
Sadaqa is voluntary charity in givenabove and beyond what is required fromthe obligation of zakat.
Muslims believe that all good deeds aremore handsomely rewarded in Ramadanthan in any other month of the year.
Consequently, many will choose thistime to give a larger portion, if not all,of the zakat for which they are obligatedto give. In addition, many will also usethis time to give a larger portion ofsadaqa in order to maximise the rewardthey believe will await them on the Dayof Judgment.
In many Muslim countries, it is not un-
common to see people giving more foodto the poor and the homeless, and evento see large public areas for the poor tocome and break their fast.
It is said that if a person helps a fastingperson to break their fast, then they re-ceive a reward for that fast, without di-minishing the reward that the fastingperson got for their fast.
Even in non-Muslim countries, no mat-ter how small the Muslim population, aconsistent increase in charitable dona-tions to both fellow Muslims and non-Muslims occur more so in this month.
In the United States of America, for ex-ample, many Muslim communities dis-persed throughout the country, partici-pate in contributing food, clothes andnon-perishable food items to local chari-ties.

THE fast of Ramadan is rigorousduring the best of times. Duringlong and hot summer days, itwould still be required for Muslims toobserve the fast for as many as 16 ormore hours at a time.
To ensure adequate nutrition and contin-ued good health, follow these tips:
. Prior to Ramadan, a Muslim should al-ways consult with a doctor about the safetyof fasting in individual health circumstanc-es.
. Even if you are generally healthy, rec-ognise that Ramadan will take a toll. Planyour schedule and meals ahead of time inorder to make sure you get the nutrients, hydration and rest that you need.
. Eat breakfast just prior to dawn. Yes,it’s hard to get up at that hour, which is whyit has many benefits and rewards. It willhelp you to wake up for the Fajr prayer. Thesuhoor meal is Sunnah. And this morningmeal is generally recognised as the singlemost important meal of the day.
Do not overeat, though. Focus on takingin foods that are rich in complex carbohy-
drates and protein, fruits or vegetables, andplenty of water. For example: an egg onwhole-grain toast, a few crackers with pea-nut butter, some orange slices and twoglasses of water.
. During the hottest part of the day, stayin cool areas (indoors or in shade) and limityour physical activity. Rest if possible.
. Avoid overindulging when breakingthe fast at sunset. Follow the Sunnah: breakyour fast with dates and either milk, water,or fruit juice.
After the maghrib prayer, continue witha light starter such as soup. After a long pe-riodof fasting, youneed tobringyour fluidsand blood sugar level up without overdoingit.
. During the early evening (after magh-rib), have a healthy and balanced dinner.Do not overeat.
. During the evening hours, resist thetemptation to drink tea, coffee and soda. When visiting friends or family, ask forglasses of water.
. Serve yourself, your family andguests a “dessert” of fresh fruit andnuts. There are lovely choices avail-
able in this season, and they are much morehealthy than cakes and samoosas.
. Sip on water throughout the evening.Aim for eight glasses by bedtime. To helpyou keep track, fill and refill a water bottlewith a measured amount of water and fin-ish it.
. Light exercise, such as walking for 15-20 minutes, is best done in the evening.
. Avoid friedandspicy foodsas theymaycause heartburn or indigestion.
. Speak to your doctor about an appro-priate multi-vitamin.
. Continue to brush and floss your teethseveral times a day.
. Wash your hands regularly, and avoidthose who cough or sneeze. This is impor-tant to prevent the spread of viruses (suchas seasonal flu and H1N1) and bacteriawhich may cause illness.
. Quit smoking!
. Organise your schedule so that you getenough sleep.

Safety wrapTHE Summer Olympics kick off in London onFriday.
One of the major concerns levelled at theSA 2010 World Cup Soccer – crime – is comingback to haunt London.
Among the most barbed voices in the worldmedia, the Brits simply could not reign intheir negativity around a safe world event inthis former colony.
History has proven their fears unfounded. Now the same questions are being asked of
the London Olympics. How safe will visitorsand athletes be? In particular, Israeli athleteswho mark the 40th anniversary of the Gamesin Munich, Germany, when terrorists killed11 Israeli athletes and coaches.
Chairman of the London 2012 Olympics, Se-bastian Coe, has promised a “safe and secure”event.
Coe fielded media enquiries after the fail-ure of private security company G4S to pro-vide adequate security staff. This has led to3 500 more British troops being called in,making it about 17 000 troops on duty to keepCoe true to his word.
Safety of another matter has also been anissue. Sex workers in Newham, the east Lon-don area which houses the stadium, havebeen bearing the brunt of a police blitz.
The expected influx of two million visitorsfor the Olympics will, it is reportedly predict-ed, inject £13bn into the UK economy overthe next four years. Perhaps safe sex is theone aspect of personal safety visitors to Lon-don may not have to worry about.
A crime associated directly with the SASoccer World Cup – the armed robbery ofthree foreign reporters covering the Portu-guese soccer team at a four-star high-securitylodge near Johannesburg – has at the timebeen solved promptly.
Two Zimbabweans and a Nigerian were ar-rested, charged, tried, convicted and sen-tenced in one of 54 special courts set up.
The world waits to see if the same efficiencycan be expected of London.

No response from policeON TUESDAY 10 July at 09:45 we were alert-ed to the sound of a child screaming outsidethe parish church of Simon of Cyrene inAcacia Road, Parkwood Estate.
On investigation we discovered that achild of about seven years was robbed of hercellphone she was carrying. She was on herway to attend one of our outreach pro-grammes. This child was extremely trauma-tised by the whole ordeal.
We immediately phoned the Grassy Parkpolice, to find the number was not opera-tional. We then called 10111 who said theywould pass the information onto the station– and that the police would respond shortly;45 minutes later a second call was made and
still no response.Fifteen minutes later I personally phoned
the station and was told by the duty officerto be patient, the police were en route.

New Honda CRV headed for SANew Honda CRV headed for SASINCE its launch in 1995, more than five-million Honda CR-V units have been soldglobally and the forthcoming generationsports a new design as it hopes to build onits predecessors’ success.
South African fans of the Japanese SUVwill have to wait until October or Novemberto get behind the wheel.
The initial range gives a choice betweentwo-litre and 2.2 diesel engines. Power re-mains the same for the i-DTEC diesel engine,at 110kW/350Nm though CO2 emissions forthe manual version have been reduced from171g/km to 153g/km.
The i-VTECpetrol seesmarginal powerandtorque increases to deliver 115kW and192Nm, while emissions have fallen from192g/km to 174g/km.
In front-wheel guise, the 2.0 petrol has aCO2 rating of 170g/km. The rest of rangesports all-wheel drive with hill assist and de-scent control.
Compared to the previous generationCR-V, the new model takes on a more asser-tive stance with a bold front design. Thebumper is joined by a horizontal grille anddeep-set headlights. The model’s signaturevertical tail-lights, now with LEDs, remainbut feature a three-dimensional style.
The headlights feature LED daytime run-ning lights.
Exterior designer Manabu Konaka says:“The CR-V has always been a car for everyoccasion. It can be both casual and formal, but theappearancemust always convey solid-ity and reliability.”
The length and height of the SUV has beenreduced by 5mm and 30mm respectively com-pared with the current model, without reduc-ing interior space.
With the rear seats folded flat, the boot ca-pacity of the CR-V has grown by 148 litres to1648 litres and with the seats folded up, bootcapacity is rated at 589 litres.
The load length has been increased by140mm to 1570mm, while the height of theload lip has been reduced by 25mm makingit easier to load heavy or awkward items.
Keyless entry and a power tailgate havebeen added to enhance its practicality.
The centre console sports a five-inch dis-play which controls audio, telephone andnavigation systems (where fitted).
More space has been created between theseats for two cup holders, a storage compart-
ment, armrest and airvents for the rear seats.Honda has added a host of technology as
standard for the new CR-V such as its ECONmode and Eco-assist systems.
When the ECON button is selected thethrottle responseandair-conditioningareau-tomatically adjusted to minimise fuel con-sumption.
The Eco-assist system uses the vehicle’sdashboard display to advise drivers on howtheir driving style is affecting fuel economy,
by changing the colour of the dial edges fromwhite to green when driving more efficiently.
The new CR-V is also the latest vehicle toemploy the automaker’s Advanced DriverAssist System (ADAS)
ADAS incorporates Honda’s Lane KeepingAssist System (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Con-trol (ACC) and Collision Mitigation BrakingSystem (CMBS), which warns of an impend-ing collision and even applies the brakes tominimise an impact. – Wheels24

The inflatable seatbelt strap, called Belt-bag, will be made available in a “luxury-classmodel”, Mercedes-Benz said in a statement.
The strap is designed to reduce the riskof injury to passengers in the rear in a head-on collision by reducing the strain placed on
the ribcage. Once the vehicle’s crash sensorsdetect an impact, the airbag control unit trig-gers the airbag deployment and the multilay-ered strap inflates to nearly three times thenormal width to better distribute the forcesacting on the passenger.
It is used in exactly the same way as a con-ventional seatbelt.
It is not planned to introduce the Beltbagfor front occupants, as airbags are already in-cluded in the front, the automaker added. –Wheels24

Opel appoints new interim chiefOpel appoints new interim chiefTHE supervisory board of Gener-al Motors’ Opel brand has namedThomas Sedran as head of Opelin the latest restructuring movefor the company.
Sedran’s new title as acting depu-ty chairman of the Opel manage-ment board follows the announce-ment that GM vice-chairperson Ste-ve Girsky would head the Europe
division on an interim basis, follow-ing Karl-Friedrich Stracke step-ping down after 16 months on thejob.
Stracke will, however, still takeon special assignments and reportto GM chairman and CEO Dan Ak-erson.
GM has lost $14bn (about R114bn)in Europe in the past 12 years. Aker-son told shareholders Europe was
the automaker’s biggest challenge.Girsky said they would continue
to implement the business plan andwork to improve it. “We will furtherreduce bureaucracy and continueto challenge the corporate culture.”
Sedran, a long-time consultant, will continue his managementboard role in charge of operations, business development and corpo-rate strategies, which he has held
since April.Wolfgang Schafer-Klug, head of
the Opel Works Council and deputyOpel supervisory board chairman, said the new team around Girskystood for change that Opel/Vaux-hall urgently needs. “Leaner man-agement structures, transparency, accountability and enforcement ca-pability. They will put Opel back ona growth path.” – Wheels24

Valencia was left frustrated, as Ajax stubborn de-fence stood tall. A close range header by the Mexi-can striker got the crowd to their feet, but an acro-batic save from Dutch keeper Sander Westerveld, denied the games opener.
In the second half, United came out firing, butstill lacked the killer instinct in front of goal. Theclosest chance came from the head of new signing,Shinji Kagawa, when a pin point accurate crossfrom Bebe was headed inches wide from the post.
Ajax hitman, Terror Fanteni, stung the hands ofUnited keeper, Ben Amos, when his effort was dugout in the 75th minute.
Ajax coach Maarten Stekelenburg was delightedat the performance displayed by the Urban Warri-ors, saying: “The players were all pumped up forthis game and playing in front of a full stadium mo-tivated our players even further.”
Defensively, Stekelenburg highlighted the ef-forts of Nazeer Allie and the towering figure of Mat-thew Booth, acknowledging that the Cape side hadconceded too many goals last season.
“It’s still in our pre-season for us that’s why wemade a number of substitutions to ensure that wekeep our players fresh, but we will continue towork hard on the training field so that at the startof our season, we can continue where we left off,”says the proud Stekelenburg.
Manchester United Manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, was impressed with Ajax’s performance when hetold MUTV: “They caused us a few problems andwe decided to make changes and bring on theyounger players, but it was a very competitivegame.”
He was particularly impressed with the perform-ance of his two new signings, Kagawa and NickPowell.

THE long-awaited battle between Ajax CapeTown and Manchester United ended in a 1-1draw at Cape Town Stadium.
The match, which had been eagerly anticipatedby both teams fans since its announcement, wasplayed in wet and rainy conditions. This, however, did not stop fans from donning their team’s coloursto the match to watch the somewhat disappointingmatch.
Ajax drew first blood when substitute, AlcardoVan Graan, chipped in a cross, catching Manches-ter United’s solid defence off-guard.
The 19 timeEnglish league championswaitedun-til the 93rd minute of stoppage time to spoil the Ur-ban Warrior’s party, when another substitute,Bebe, skilfully slotted in the ball into the back ofthe net from close range.
Ajax proved their worth against a ManchesterUnited team missing big names such as WayneRooney, Nani and Nemanja Vidic.
Khama Billiat was one of the stand out perform-ers for Ajax, giving United’s young left back, TylerBlackett, a tough day at the office.
The Zimbabwean winger, who was named manof the match, had the Cape Town outfit’s first realchance, striking the ball just wide of the right handpost. Minutes later the winger tore United’s mid-field, which featured experience campaigners inMicheal Carrick and veteran Paul Scholes, toshreds before losing his footing and the opportuni-ty was lost.
Chances were few for United, with Javier “Chi-charito” Hernandez getting on the end of fewchances missed in front of goal. Winger Antonio

A YOUNG Rondebosch East martial artist has beatenout competitors from 36 other countries to win a majorinternational tournament.
Farouk Mayman won the under-13 division at the USOpen ISKA World Martial Arts Championships in Or-lando, Florida on Saturday 14 July – just five years aftertaking up the sport.
Mayman, who attends Cannon Creek in Pinelands, says he enjoys the sport because it’s as much about re-solving differences, as it is about fighting. “It’s notabout hurting your opponent, it’s about making peacewith your opponent. When you’re done fighting, youdon’t go back and say I’m going to hit you,” commentsMayman. “The only way to test yourself is to fight oth-er people.”
The 13-year-old adds that the sport offers somethingoffer to those not interested in the full contact or semi-contact fighting. “There are different divisions. If youare not good at fighting then you can be good at kataor you can be good at breaking. They also have high
kick, where there is something that’s really high andyou have to jump and kick it.”
His excitement at having been crowned championis evident.
Mayman first got involvedwith the sport becausehisolder sister was participating. He trains at his dojotwice a week and twice a week at home, while also takeparticipating in hockey and waterpolo at school.
Two years ago Mayman finished third in the USOpen and he believes this experience gave him confi-dence to win this time. “The last time I was so nervousthat my legs were shaking. I was confident, because Isaw what they did and I knew what they are about,”says Mayman.
“I fought people before and I knew their style of fight-ing. Other people were just staying back, they didn’twant to go in and fight and that’s how points were lost.So each time I made them go back, they lost points. Itcomes from confidence – if you have confidence youwill win.”
The martial artist hopes to continue with the sport, and eventually open his own dojo.
