It was remiss of us not to acknowledge Narre Warren on setting what will likely be a long

standing record for consecutive victories last week. The Magpies racked up 44 wins in a row including two premierships and that is a mark worthy of note in anyone’s book, especially given the way it was achieved. Narre Warren has made no secret of their commitment to developing and promoting their juniors as the basis of success and for that they must be congratulated. Most agree that junior development is the way to go and while we agree that few have the growth area that Narre Warren and a couple of other Casey Cardinia League clubs enjoy, the focus on promoting from within and pushing up those who are already part of a club is vital. All clubs across the three PCNSA leagues need to keep this point front of mind. While we are feting positive achievements, well done to the crew at Carbonless Books (formerly our long-term partner Printscene) for their continued production of a high-quality and attractive set of records each week. The Footy Record and Chronicle are packed full of information and facts that cover our competitions together with football and netball across our region as a whole. Columns including AFL Vic Country, SUA and CCUA, Stingrays, Frankston Dolphins and Casey Scorpions news, along with club notes and match previews make the publications must-reads for most local sports fans.We strongly advise all footy followers to grab a copy each week and have a read. The answers to most queries that this office is asked to provide are more often than not inside the record.Peninsula League will be the focus of this weekend’s rivalry round with Seaford hosting Chelsea for the Frank Parsons Trophy. This award dates back to 2001 and commemorates the memory of Frank who was one of the finest and most progressive football administrators on the Mornington Peninsula through three decades.

Most trophies or shields struck to celebrate rivalry rounds between our clubs have significant history attached to them and we encourage all clubs that play these games to impart that history back to up-and-coming officials and volunteers, along with players and supporters. It is important to acknowledge our history and use is as an example and positive reinforcement as much as possible.

As clubs should now be aware, the venue for this year’s Women Making a Mark in Sport luncheon has been finalised and interest in the event is growing rapidly. It will be held on Friday 18 July at the Sandhurst Club and the cost will be $55 per person including a two-course lunch and drink on arrival. The event will benefit the Brainwave charity, which assists children with brain injuries or illnesses. It is a non-government funded charity and all profits will be donated to assist support this important cause. For bookings or further details email: [email protected]

Bendigo Community BankAFL Vic CountryHealthy Club Trial a Boost for Golden SquareBy any measure, Bendigo FL club Golden Square can claim to be one of country Victoria’s best. The Bulldogs have not only won the last five consecutive BFL premierships but have also become an off-field leader through AFL Victoria’s ‘Healthy Footy Club Trial’.A recent report released by La Trobe University has shown the impact of small changes designed to improve the health of club members and supporters. The three-year program has involved several components, including offering healthier options at the club’s canteen and mid-strength beer at the Bulldogs match-day bar during the game.Survey results suggest the move to mid-strength beer is paying off.Of the more than 500 people surveyed, 71% thought that the move to mid-strength was good idea. In another sign of its popularity with supporters, 68% of people surveyed at four Golden Square home games thought that it would be good if the mid-strength policy was extended to every ground in the Bendigo FL.Spectators who normally drink full-strength beer were also asked to nominate their first choice alternative if a full bar was not available. In 2012, 45% nominated full-strength mixed drinks and 39% nominated mid-strength beer. But in 2013 those nominating mid-strength beer rose to 59%.Golden Square President Jy Pertzel said responsible alcohol management was now clearly aligned to the club’s values and goals.“It really started about 10 years ago with small changes being made to improve our off-field culture,” Pertzel said.“When AFL Victoria approached us with this project three years ago we were ripe to be involved and take things a step further.”“Overall all we think it’s been a positive outcome that’s benefited the whole club.”“We’ve had the odd complaint from people wanting to buy a full strength beer but overall we haven’t seen our revenue in this area drop off or seen anyone leave

because of it.”

“Focusing on our culture through this initiative has also helped us build better relationship with our junior club and had an impact on ability to recruit players.”“When we speak to players about coming to our club, the fact we have a good culture is usually a big selling point.” AFL Victoria Cultural Strategy Manager John Strachan said Golden Square had showed great leadership by being the first and only club involved in this program.“Golden Square’s focus is on being a healthy club that is inclusive and family friendly,” Strachan said. “Alcohol has not disappeared from the club, but its culture has shifted.” “Underage drinking has been targeted with a “no tolerance” approach and “All you can drink” events have changed to “six drink tickets” events.Strachan said the Healthy Footy Club Trial has proved that making small changes can have a big impact. The Health Footy Club Trial has been conducted in partnership with VicHealth.

PiES AND BUDS FACE OFFBy Toe Punt – MP News Group

What a round of Nepean League football as we head into the second half of the 2014 season. The Match of the Round is without question third-placed Crib Point up against sixth placed Rosebud. The Magpies have answered every challenge this season and continue to surprise some in Nepean League circles.Whilst it still seems difficult to pencil the Pies into the finals action, it has earned the right to do so.Crib Point has beaten the two grand finalists of last season, albeit by less than one straight kick.Today is another challenge against the team that went within a kick of playing in the grand final last year.Rosebud has been in very good form in recent times and it is a good time for them to get the Magpies.Their stars are at the top of the game and they have some new faces, such as Glen Peterson and Tyle Williams, who are getting under the guard of opposition. We all know about the great ability of Spooner, Giarusso, Bancroft, Bentley and Payne. It’s now those ‘second stringers’ who are starting to create reputations of their own – the likes of Hickey, McDonald, Jarman and Shuldt. Sam Krumich gets a big job each week, Zurek is in good form and the likes of Ben Shultz and Tom Baker are at the top of their game. Both the Pies and Buds play a similar style of game. They are hard at the contest, play accountable football, defend well, protect possession and attack at the right time. The Magpies don’t have the depth of ‘stars’ that Rosebud has, however, they are all very well aware of the role they have in the team and what is expected of them.

Luke Herrington, Flack, Arnold, Symes and Warry are stars of the competition, while the likes of Jake Bromley and Jack Johnson are rarely beaten. It’s going to be a wonderful game of football. The Magpies at home are hard to beat and they deserve the respect of being tipped for this one.Win this game and the Magpies are close the mouths of the doubters.

Football PreviewHASTINGS was fantastic last week against Rye. Today is a much tougher proposition against DROMANA at Pier St.The Blues proved last week that if 22 players are committed to the cause, then anything is possible. They also proved that regardless of the situation in a game, they have the ability to fight back and win. There was a lot to like about the Blues’ performance. There was also a lot to like about some individuals. Grant Masterson was back to his brilliant best. Grant is such an exciting player when he’s leading hard and working over opponents. His ability in the air makes him extremely dangerous running both ways.Josh Mulheron looks fantastic. He’s fit and firing and providing his onballers with good usage. Lance Brouwer last week, playing as a key defender, was just superb against the best centre half forward in the game at the moment in Aaron Findlay. However, Dromana is a completely different proposition all together than previous opponents. The Tigers are the best side in the competition, by a long way at the moment. They are the benchmark. They have height, speed, power, experience, class and a great desire to win. Winning has become a habit. The Blues set a standard last week and they need to ensure this is their minimum output.Dromana loves a challenge and will enjoy nothing more than putting the Blues back in their box.As good as Hastings’ best is, it won’t be good enough to beat Dromana.

RYE must bounce back against PEARCEDALE.The Demons are a long way off it at the moment and need to find some cohesion if they are to play any part in the finals. As individuals, the Demons are a very talented side and look wonderful on paper. In the heat of battle, there are a handful of players doing their own thing and not playing team football. There was also some finger pointing and arguing going on out on the ground last week, which was a concern.Football is a team game and only when there is a united front does a team beat a team of individuals. This is not juniors. Players can’t win games of footy off their own boot anymore. They can influence a result, but not determine one.If the attitude is team orientated, Rye can expect better performances.Pearcedale, after enjoying a couple of good weeks, seem to be on struggle street again. They were great for a half against Red Hill last week but let themselves down with a lack of concentration in the third quarter. That comes with a young list. The key now is to stay in the contest longer against good opposition. On sheer weight of talent, Rye will win.

Football PreviewRED HILL will be looking to consolidate its place in the top three with a win against DEVON MEADOWS.The Hillmen have been taking all before them and getting the job done.A few players who had the acid placed on them a couple of weeks ago are also starting to get their hands on the footy a lot more.Devon Meadows has been whacked with the unlucky stick. Injuries have been a concern, as has players unavailability. The Panthers will try and stem the flow, however, they won’t hang on for long enough.Red Hill will run, carry and spread and on its own deck, will be too good.SOMERVILLE and FRANKSTON BOMBERS will be hard at it today, looking for a rare win.The Eagles had a purple patch where they won four games, however, it’s been a bit lean in recent times.

In fact, their form has been terrible. The Bombers are due for a win. They have been extremely competitive in the large majority of their matches. They will be setting their sights on winning this one and I won’t be surprised if they get the job done. However, Somerville, with their backs to the wall, playing on their home turf, are going to be hard to beat.SORRENTO was back up and about last week after going down to Crib Point the week before. They tackle TYABB, who have a massive task each week they play.Leigh Poholke is on track for 100 after another bag of nine last week, bringing him to 45 goals for the season. Let’s hope they look for him at every opportunity this week to help him on his way.

Hastings BluesHere we go again heading down to Dromana to play last years premiers, who are the bench mark of the competition, we look forward to the challenge that today brings our club. Last week we ventured down to Rye in a massive game for our Senior side. Well it ended up being a wonderful game of Football between two very evenly matched clubs with our boys coming out winners, in what was a true test of character for Dunneys boys. We certainly came away from this game with a massive amount of upside, keep that same intensity today boys and you will test the competitions heavy weight. Our Reserves had a much better game and found themselves in a tight contest but they never gave up going down by only a couple of goals. Our Under 18s had another win to make it two on the trot well done boys you are playing some really good footy, Good luck today down at Sorrento lets get that third win. Devon Meadows PanthersVALE CHRIS BURHOP 1988 - 2014Condolences to the Burhop family. Chris’ life, was a life sadly taken too soon. He fought the battle long and fought the battle hard. He showed genuine courage in the face of unimaginable adversity. Now he is finally at rest, he will never be forgotten and will live on as an ongoing inspiration to everyone he touched during his short stay with us.It’s impossible to fathom what must’ve been going through Chris’ head in recent times, but to speak to him you wouldn’t know it. Even up until just 2 weeks ago, he would reply “Good thanks, yourself?” whenever asked how he was going. Not wanting to bother you with the details, he’d rather just look at you with his cheeky grin, talk a bit of crap and tell you how good the Magpies were going. You could often find Chrissy at the bar enjoying a Jimmy can or 4 after a long day in the timekeepers box. He was a true clubman and was always willing to get up and timekeep or do whatever was asked of him. Footy clubs live and breathe because of blokes like Chris Burhop and he will be sorely missed. As a final thought: When the chips are down, whether it be on the footy field, at work or in your personal life in general, have a think about Chrissy and the way he courageously fought his battle. Let Chrissy be your inspiration to run harder and further. Let him inspire you to solve the issue with your work. Let his memory inspire you to tell your family you love them and forgive and forget.Rest In Peace Chrissy

Somerville eaglesDromana at Dromana proved to be a massive challenge for the club on Saturday. U18s had to win to keep their finals chances alive. They were switched on from the outset and a 7 goal first half put the game out of the Tigers reach and we powered away to a 10 goal victory. The boys are sitting just outside the 5 at the moment and they can’t afford to drop any games against opposition around them on the ladder if they are to play finals football this season. With up to 20 players unavailable on the list the 2s went into the game against last year’s premiers with only 2 players over the age 25. They produced their best team effort of the season with every player contributing on the day. It was great to see Ronnie back providing a target up forward for us and the boys played great team footy to power away 40 point victors. The seniors were a terrible disappointment. After being touched up the week before against Rosebud it was a chance to try and redeem ourselves. Yes we have a number of injuries at the club but we expect a better effort than what we displayed last Saturday. The end result was a humiliating 20 goal defeat and a battering to our finals aspirations. Our club captain Ben Sedgwick tries his guts out every week, he can’t do it alone! Boys we came up well short this week and we must turn it around immediately at it starts today at home against the Bombers. – Elwin Snr – Go Eagles!

Frankston Bombers The boys came flying out of the gates last Saturday to give some quality opposition a real run for their money, leading by 3 goals at the first change. Unfortunately a couple of crucial injuries before half time to early ball winners Duff & Fulton would bridge the gap to near level at the main break. Page & Brand were terrific down the back end, stepping up a cog in an undermanned side. Whilst the ever reliable Reynolds & Proud did what was expected of them up the front end. Hunter found hisself in the best again for the 4th week running as well as the man who woman all over the Peninsula can’t believe is still single-Mitchell Bosward who maintained his usual workhorse effort throughout the afternoon. Alas we were to be overrun by 6 goals.Somewhat of a upset for our reserves last week against a very strong Rosebud. A few late changes sure did upset the balance of the side, but blokes like Offer & Dowling didn’t seemed phased by this not 1 iota, booting 5 & 3 goals respectively. Myers & Black worked tirelessly all day to try & bring a 3rd quarter deficit back to something reasonable, but just like copping a $240 fine for only being 4km/ph over on a freeway, we weren’t getting out of this one on the day! After giving away the 1st 4 goals it was a case of catchup footy for the U/18s, ultimately being defeated by 6 majors. The older heads in Foster & Sharman had a fair ol crack all day, as did Booker who played his best game for the year. Gregory & Neal were consistent as always.

Club NotesRosebud BudsLast week all 3 football sides came away with the 4 points for the second consecutive week - something that probably hasn’t been achieved for some time. It was also great to see the A-grade netball team have a great win. The Under 18s extended their lead at every change and won by 37 points but still need to make more of their chances in front of goal. The Development Team sitting 9th came up against the third placed Bombers and probably weren’t given much of a chance by those outside the Club. Importantly they got off to a good start - being level at quarter time - and kicked 6 goals to 2 in the second half to take a solid 26 point win. If the side continues to improve at the rate they have in recent weeks - and continue to do the team things - who knows what might happen! The seniors got off to a slow start - trailing by 3 goals at the first change but kicked 11 goals to 6 in the second half to record a 36 point win. It was great to see Glenn Petersen continue to make the most of his opportunities featuring in the best and kicking 4 goals. Congratulations to Luke Farrelly who today plays his 150th game for Rosebud (45 seniors & 105 reserves) and to Daniel O’Hehir who will mark his 100th game (68 seniors & 32 reserves)! The Club also conveys its best wishes to Tahnee and Aaron Wilson on the safe arrival of baby Audrey - a little sister for Billy and Scarlett. The next Club Function is 19th July - after the away game at Hastings - details to be announced soon. Go Buds!!!

Rye DemonsGreat day off the field last week, with the sponsors luncheon and guest speaker Ricky Nixon entertaining the crowd, just a shame the seniors couldn’t cap of the day with a win at home. Full credit to the Hasting’s side that never gave up and pipped us on the line. Kev Miles and the crew would have a nice road trip back to Hastings. Better players on the day, Jake and Ryan Semmel, Sutts, Jay “Frank” Bruno, Holmsey and Chris Glesson. Massive day today boys at Pearcedale, we must get back on the winners list and get back into the top 5. The Development squad is starting to get some players back from injury and are getting their season back on track, as well. One game out the 5 at the moment, and AD is pumped up for a win today. Great games last week from Chad “Bomber” Ambrose, Teague, Sterlo, Mitch Harris, Mazza Ablett and Schwindy. The Under 18’s had their best game of the year, training numbers have improved and so is their fitness and game plans. Keep working hard boys, the rewards will come. Great games from Anton Walker, what about that speccy, Richo, Nath Jackson, Craig “Caesar” Doolan, Lachy Ryan with 4 big ones and Bobby “Mullet” Cameron. Mid Season Ball tonight, so into the Pearcedale rooms for a quick one after the game, then back to Rye for a 7.00pm start to the ball. Past Players v Present Day Players Golf Day Sunday July the 13th. See Sutts or Beelie to book in. $65.00 includes golf, beers and dinner. 11.30am tee off Rosebud Country Club.

Dromana TigersSponsors of the week are Cleanedge Car Wash & Fingal Gardens Sand & Soil.Welcome to the clubs Heritage Game against Hastings in aid of Bowel Cancer Research. Remember Dromana Senior team jumpers will be auctioned after 6.00pm in social rooms. A special thanks to Daniel Waddell for organising this day and to McMillan Real Estate for sponsoring the jumpers. Those that attended last Saturdays Presidents Luncheon were treated to a fine meal catered for by Two Buoys and a guest speaker who had many ‘sports’ stories and a prolific writer of sports based books in Ken Piesse. The auction for the signed Swans jumper saw some spirited bidding before been acquired for $800 Our senior team also turned on a show of their potential power with a 121 point win over Somerville which produced 10 goal kickers including one from Wheels that would have done the World Cup proud. However our Reserves and U18s were overpowered by very strong opposition sides. The Reserves poor first quarter costing them any chance of winning the game. Our Netball teams did not fare much better with the A & B Teams suffering heavy losses but the C Grade holding on for a draw.Remember get in early for your club Major Raffle & function ticket. GO TiGERS!!!

Tyabb YabbiesFootball...Crib Point to tall and to strong for our boys both in Seniorsand Reserves with their big fullforward in Glenn Boyd our back line was under immense pressure from the start, the game was played at a pretty fast pace,Tyabb again at times played great passages of football through out the game but know where near enough to an impact, but again Tyabb out played and out scored the opposition in the last quartar. Our U/18s played away with Hastings at Rye and came up with a win (two in a row ).Congrats to Ben Gould who played his 100th club game.Netball...Crib Point A-Grade undefeated, B-Grade who had lost only one game came up against a well drilled Tyabb combination in A and B, B winning by 5 points and a hard fort game between the As, Tyabb came away with the chocolates by 2 points well done girls. Our U/17s also had a win great effort, unfortunately Cs went down to Cribby who were to tall for our girls. Thanks to Bendigo Bank for their effort on the day, Seniors shield went to Crib Point and the Netball shield went to Tyabb thanks to all.Coming up midseason ball July 5th see Jay or Leanne for tickets.Go Yabbies

Crib Point MagpiesA good day out at Tyabb saw the 1sts and 2nds post some solid wins to keep our season ticking along nicely. At 7-2 and 5-4 at the halfway mark respectively means we still have a lot of work in front of us but the teams destiny is in their own hands. The unders were beaten but again keep showing improvement each week and are far more competitive than the early rounds. Black and White Ball was a cracking night as it always is each year with everyone scrubbing up well. Today we welcome Rosebud who after a slow start to the year are playing good footy across the seniors and ressies and we’ll certainly need to be switched on and at our best if we want to continue our good form. Good luck to everyone taking the field and netball courts today.

Club NotesRed Hill HillmenIt happened…after weeks of promising play from all teams, the Sloppies finally did their part in granting the club 3 from 3!The 18’s kicked away to a 6 goal lead before taking the foot off the pedal and having to grind their way to a 7 point win. Allsop was once again sensational, bagging 3 from the midfield while Turner, Jones, Jago, Raworth & Hulk did more than their part. Mid-day, and it was time for 2 mammoth returns. M. Bateman returned following 3 years of frat-fuelled knee rehab while H. Byrt returned from what many thought may have been season ending braised ribs. For the first time in 5 weeks, 22 players contributed for almost a full game, finally living up to the “potential” and scoring the 4 points. Simmo was dominant down back while Blakey was similar up forward kicking 4. A very positive corner to turn for some confidence in future weeks! The Seniors once again did what needed to be done, although the score at half time was much tighter than many would have thought. However a 49 point 3rd quarter helped set up another impressive overall performance. Concerning perhaps, is that the CHF once again kicked more than the FF (just ask Eamesy), although in actual fact all did exactly what was asked of them in the end, especially Civic, who dead-eyed 3 and secured the title of BOG. Broom-Broom.Still waiting to hear from Russell Coight’s Management. Either way, this one’s going to be fun! Lock in Saturday 12th July and get outfit searching for Outback Barn Bash!!

Pearcedale PanthersBatman, Superwoman, Heroes and Villains galore filled the room on Saturday night for the Netball function. Great costumes, great tunes and a good time had by all. Don’t forget to get your tickets for the next function Pearcedale Football Netball Club Cocktail Party on July 19. Tickets available at $40 per single and $70 a double. If you prepay your tickets you get a free cocktail on arrival. See Karen this week.We welcome all of the club’s fantastic sponsors to the rooms today for the annual Sponsor’s Day luncheon. Without the support of these people and their businesses Pearcedale Football Netball Club would not be able to function. Today is our small token of thanks for their support. Some of our Sponsors have supported our great club for many, many years. Check out the list of our sponsors in Tractor Torque today and make sure you support their businesses when you need something. Thanks to the sponsors. We welcome Rye Football Netball Club to Tractor Park today. Let’s hope for a competitive day. GO DALES!

Sorrento SharksLast round saw us at home to Devon Meadows. The unders played well all day and were just beaten at the end of the day. The reserves although struggling with numbers due to the high number of injuries in all grades once again showed that they were there to play for their coach and club. The seniors fought back from the previous weeks loss with a good win against a side that although well beaten never gave up until the final siren. Congratulations to Trevor Mattison who played his 200th senior game including 5 premierships. This week we host Tyabb at home. Tyabb is well and truly in rebuilding phase but that does not mean that given the right conditions they will not be a threat so every player needs to be on guard and give his all. Thanks to Rob and Anne Pitt mine hosts of last weeks sponsor of the week “Hotel Sorrento” for their generous support over the years. May our relationship continue on for many more years.

Stingrays Slide to 6th on LadderThe Dandenong Southern Stingrays were never in the hunt against the North Ballarat Rebels going down by 44 points, which was played at Eureka Stadium on Sunday in slippery and windy conditions. With cool conditions and light drizzle forecasted for the day it was always going to be about who had the better start, with honours once again going to the opposition, but lucky all 3 scoring attempts were points in the first 3 minutes. Taylor Joyce kicked the opening goal for the day (1 of his 5) but disappointingly that would be last score the Stingrays would add for the remainder of the quarter trailing the Rebels by 16 at the first break. The Stingrays wasted numerous opportunities when they got their hands on the ball and it took Stingrays Coach Craig Black to address the group asking for commitment over the football and stop overusing the slippery pill at the quarter time break. The ground was very slippery and loose on the surface with many players losing their feet for most of the day. He wanted cleaner and more direct movement instead of hugging the wide wings. The start of the 2nd quarter looked like the players had worked it out moving forward within a minute but another wasteful entry in side 50, which was going to be the flavour of the day for the young Stingrays, cost them dearly. Ballarat time after time rebounded and controlled the ball in cleaner movement from the back half to punish them on the scoreboard slightly extended their lead to 25 points at the half time break. The second half was going to be a huge challenge for the group with Black demanding senior players to step up and take control. The wind had picked up with the Stingrays kicking with the advantage in the third. The premiership quarter was the best for the day with both sides going goal for goal, before Ballarat scrapped a few in a row opening up a comfortable lead. The Stingrays had plenty of the ball and won the clearances and contested marks for the day, but poor entry into the forward half resulting in points or no scores at all and silly free kicks cost them greatly. A late roving goal to Lachlan Williams closed the margin to 26 points as the siren sounded giving the Stingrays a slight sniff going into the last. The last quarter was all one way traffic, unfortunately it was the Rebels doing all of the attacking kicking the first two goals and putting the game beyond doubt.

It was lucky Daylan Kempster stood tall for the day denying many marks and setting up plenty of rebound, with Alex Harnett and Sam Geurts grunt work moving the ball, but lack of support up the ground denied the Stingrays any opportunity to close the gap. A positive for the Stingrays is the performance of key forward Taylor Joyce who once again kicked a bag of 5 goals from his 11 possessions. Stingrays Region Talent Manager Mark Wheeler summed up the day by saying “We had a very good opportunity to secure a position in the top four, but too many players didn’t turn up to play today….The Rebels showed us how to play the game we wanted to play, for that they reap the rewards and take our position on the ladder and we slide to the middle of the pack.”He went on to say, “There are no excuses, we were beaten on the day by the better side. We now get the opportunity to test the character of the group on how they are going to back up from this. With all Regions having the ability to bring in their Private school players in the next few weeks there could be up to 8-10 changes for the game against the Cannons…those in today’s team had the ability to control their own destiny, which they didn’t, now the coaching staff have the challenge to reset the team and take on a team that is touted top 2 in the TAC Cup.”Next week the Stingrays take on the Calder Cannons. The game is to be played on Saturday 28th June at Highgate Arena, Craigeburn. The game start at 1.00pm.Entry is free.

School holidaysThe Dolphins Term Two School Holiday Program for primary aged boys and girls is running on Thursday 3 and 10 July from 9am to 3.15pm.The program is run by Dolphins players and coaches, cost for both sessions is just $60 ($40 for one) including lunch, featuring fun footy activities, skill development, mini-matches and an in-depth look behind the scenes of a VFL football program. For more info or to book phone Brad on 0430 322 307.Slow Start Kills DolphinsAn impressive second half has been wasted by an insipid first half as the Dolphins fell to Port Melbourne by 42 points on Saturday at the North Port Oval. The second-placed Borough simply put on a show in the first two quarters, blasting 26 scoring shots to four in the opening hour. But after a fearsome spray from coach Simon Goosey at half-time, suddenly the visitors lifted their intensity to VFL level and booted two goals in five minutes.Khan Haretuku provided a flashback to his best form with a flying pack mark and goal, then Leigh Kitchin charged forward and converted after some excellent tackling pressure inside the forward 50.Frankston continued their quest for respectability in the fourth quarter with youngster Ben Cavarra leading the way.The rebounding influence of Luke Potts and Josh Tynan grew steadily throughout the day, while Shane Hockey and Tim Harper began to wrench control off the Borough midfield, thanks in no small part to the tireless efforts of ruckman Russ Gabriel. With Potts going forward to boot two goals the Dolphins finished with a flourish, booting five majors to three in an entertaining final term.*The Dolphins return to Frankston Park this Saturday (28 June) to face Essendon at 1pm

youngsters Fall ShortIt was ‘Power forward Saturday’ at Port Melbourne, but it wasn’t quite enough to get the Dolphins development team over the line.Strongly-built Cranbourne youngster Nathan Gardiner showed his four-goal haul the previous week was no flash in the pan with five more against the Borough. He had plenty of help from Noble Park big man Vergim ‘Giggsy’ Faik who slotted four majors as the Dolphins ran the fourth-placed Borough to the line.It was a hard-fought opening term with only three goals scored, but the second stanza became a goal-scoring bonanza.Frankston piled on 5.3 with Josh Newman making his presence felt after being dropped from the senior team, and the speed of Jake Greeley and Sam Fox causing issues for the Port defence. But the home team had plenty of attacking avenues of their own, slamming through 6.1 to take a 14-point edge into the changerooms. The third quarter looked like it would be more of the same early, but a lapse from the Dolphins opened the door and Port walked right in.Trailing by 32 at the last break Frankston mounted a mighty challenge, booting six goals in the final quarter to get within two goals, but whenever they threatened the Borough seemed to have the answers to secure their 18-point win.Newman, Greeley, Fox, Faik and Gardiner were all standouts, while the cool-under-pressure Boyd Bailey impressed as did Brayden Irving.

Bendigo Community BankAFL South EastPlanning for the FutureIn the coming months, AFL South East will be releasing a number of plans and reports which will help shape the future direction and delivery of football and in turn netball within the region.

AFL South East is a body which has been developed to serve in the best interests of the region as a whole and to bring ALL stakeholders together – leagues, clubs, umpiring associations and sporting partners (netball).

There has been and continues to be division within this region and any rhetoric around AFL South East’s motives being anything but what was listed above is designed to maintain that division and work against the interests of all.

AFL South East are working on a number of plans simultaneously – some of which will take longer to produce. These include:

Strategic Plan – the blueprint for AFL SE’s operations and focus. The plan will cover the timeframe of 2014-2016 and include 7 key pillars. These include participation, community, engagement, development, facilities, partnerships and people. The plan is expected to be released in August.

Facility Development Plan – incorporating and inclusive of all levels of government, this plan will provide an important reference for facility investment in the region. All clubs and leagues will have the opportunity to present their development and upgrade needs as part of the plan, which, through a consolidated approach, will achieve broader, more targeted and more significant outcomes.

Regional Coaching Strategy – AFL South East will shortly release its coaching strategy for the region. This strategy will provide for a significant increase in the investment being made into coaching training, development and support. Many initiatives in the

coaching space will emanate from the strategy release and for those clubs that embrace these initiatives, real and tangible benefits await.

AFL South East is a multi-faceted body. We are responsible locally for the governance and application of AFL Victoria Country’s rules and regulations and our Football Development Managers are responsible for the development and growth of the sport at all levels. We are also a membership based body and will continue to deliver benefits for that membership.

As the overseeing body for football in the region, it is imperative that planning for the future takes a high priority at this early stage of the Commission’s existence. AFL South East is here to stay and through appropriate, diligent and feasible planning, we can all look forward to a cohesive, dynamic and progressive football environment into the future.

VShL SUA Record Write UpWe are entering the back half of the season and all teams and umpires are in the process of fine tuning their per-formances and aiming high. It is therefore an appropri-ate time to remind us all, as umpires, of the important aspects of our role and how we can perform to our best. We must remember, ultimately we are a part of the game and must contribute, however the game is not about us, we need to play our part. We must be fair, honest and respectful to all players, clubs, officials and fellow um-pires. If we prepare well and present ourselves in good shape, correct gear and have a good knowledge of the laws, we will be well on our way. Our coaches will be there to assist us in our role and we need to listen and learn from them and be open to their feedback. At the end of the day, we must always enjoy what we do and continue to work as a team to achieve our best and we can never go wrong. Your match is the most important of the day. Enjoy it!Accreditation!!We have been harping on about accreditation all year. All umpires, field, boundary and goal are required to com-plete their umpire accreditation, whether you are in your first year or fifty-fifth. Level 1 Accreditation requires you to complete 3 steps: an online assessment, diary entries and then coach’s observations. You MUST complete all 3 parts and hand them to Mark Mounsey or the SUA office. Once you have done this, they will be sent off and you will receive your official certificate. You have not complet-ed accreditation until all three have been completed. We urge ALL umpires, if you have not begun this process, or not sure what this is, head to the SUA website for more information, and begin this as soon as possible.international Cup Umpire’s RequiredUmpires are needed for the International Cup to be held in Melbourne during August 9-23, 2014. Dromana TigersOuch! What a week! This week in the Tiger den, there were positives and negatives. But, let’s start with the positives. The C grade game had spectators and players biting their nails to the quick as the Tiger girls came back from 10 goals behind at half time to draw at the final siren. Both teams played hard, competitive and tough netball and it was another fantastic game of netball. The B grade was not so lucky. With many of their players out injured, the team consisted of six B grade players and a range of C grade players who stayed to help the B girls. However, Somerville was just too strong and gave us a fair beating. In the A grade, we knew it would be a tough game and while we lost, the girls can say they played hard and at their best. Unfortunately, the game was called off with 59 seconds to go as our shooter injured her knee and will probably be out for the rest of the season. Awards for this week in the C grade went to Sheldon Williams and Sahra Dupuy. In the B grade Jenna Stewart and Kiandra Ball and in the A grade Laura Vidotto and Jade Smith. The $50 this week went to Georgie May! Great work ladies and Breeza, from all of us, we wish you a speedy recovery! This Sunday, at Bunnings Rosebud, we are holding our annual BBQ fundraiser, so come on down and grab a snag to support the girls. Lastly, special congratulations to our B grade team for winning the GRAND FINAL on Monday night. The ladies played with finesse and integrity, and turned a 7 point lost at half time into a 4 point win; a special mention to Clorinda who received the MVP award! Go Tigers!

Tyabb YabbiesIt was a fantastic team effort in the 17s last week with all of the girls playing some of their best netball. Well done girls for your efforts at training - it is clearly showing on the court! C-Grade knew it was going to be challenging against Crib Point but were disappointed with the lack of consistency they showed across the 4 quarters. The girls have made huge improvements in their skills and understanding of the game and will start to reduce the margins in the next few games. B-Grade maintained their excellent form and came out strongly against top of the ladder Crib Point. The Magpies made a few changes in the second and were a much quicker and defensive team, restricting us to just 4 goals. Tyabb threw the ball away A LOT in the third and allowed Cribby to level things at 3/4 time. Pleasingly the girls controlled their nerves and pulled away to win the last by 9. Well done on a brilliant team win ladies. A-Grade used the frustration felt after the Rye draw to ensure they took the 4 points in a tough battle against Crib Point. After a slow start the girls stepped it up in the second and did enough to maintain control on the scoreboard for the rest of the game. Birg and Watto were exceptional but it was the communication and team work that made the biggest difference on the day. We travel south today prepared to fight hard in each contest and play the Tyabb way. NiP NiP!

Red Hill HillsIt was an exciting start to the day when the Under’s took on a very good team in Pearcedale. The Panthers won by a goal in a penalty shot after the siren. Well done to them. They were deserving winners and hopefully the Red Hill girls learnt they have to play 4 quarters of netball even when you’re on top of the ladder because letting opponents get 8 goal leads while you’re playing at 50% just isn’t going to cut it against good sides. Well Done to Eden BOC and our superstar defenders Jade and Greta had a great game.C grade looked classy and confident as they rolled the Panthers by 12 goals and are now just 1 game out of top 4.B grade found some good form to have a competitive and fun game against Pearcedale, and lead through part of the game but couldn’t hold them off in the last quarter. Thanks to the number of girls that had to play 2 games, the winter weather caused lots of girls out sick. Hope all the girls are feeling better this week.A graders are working well and beat the Panthers by 30 goals and now sit 5th on the ladder. It’s going to be a tough day on the court for the senior squads today as we play Devon Meadows. They are sitting on top in Both C and B grade, and in the top 4 for A. We will be the underdogs but hoping to get a few upsets as it gets to the pointy end of the season. We’ve got to start beating the top teams if we want to play finals. Good Luck Girls

Crib Point MagpiesNow that our spray tans have faded and we’ve swapped our stilettos for runners, it’s time to think netball again! Just a quick thanks to the functions committee for putting on such a great night at the Black and White Ball.Last week A Grade suffered their first loss against a very strong Yabbie outfit, going down by 2 goals. Coach Amy Slef was happy with the game though, praising the girls for playing the whole game out unfortunately just running out of time. Well done to Belinda Keays and Lily Hibbert for receiving the awards for playing excellent games. B Grade had their second loss on the trot. Like Amy, Mark Slef was happy with the effort - Tyabb was just the better team on the day. He is after a more consistent four quarter effort from the girls today. Annie Palsar had a blinder in WD and really changed the game when she came on. Ange Barclay also played well in GD, a position that she is becoming better and better in with each game. All the best to Kate O’Neill who is off on her big adventure overseas, don’t miss us too much Kate-O!C Grade were our only winners for the day and in the words of coach Adrienne Harris “winners are grinners”. It is clear that the work at training is paying off, being to be reflected in matches. Adrienne and the girls will be looking for a repeat performance again today when we welcome Rosebud to our home courts. Ellyce Horobin and Demelza Baxter were our best players. Both seamlessly fitting into new playing roles.

Somerville eaglesLast week we faced Dromana at Dromana and had some mixed results. It was our second indoor game for the season and there was sunshine outside again!! The C team didn’t have their best day, with scores ending up level at the final siren. The girls are hoping to get back to playing the good, strong netball that they are capable of against Frankston today. The B grade team had a good win. They started strong, scoring 17 goals in the first quarter. The girls are starting to play better as a team, moving the ball quickly and confidently. Best on court was awarded to Emily. The determination she showed to collect some great intercepts, was brilliant and really lifted the girls. The A team had a successful day, having a good win after a bit of a whacky start. The combinations down both ends worked well and the connection throughout the mid court was good. The goalers goaled well and the defence end was solid as a rock. The courts were very sippery, making movement a little tricky, but the girls stepped it up and coped well. Best on goes to Tayla and Kristy for their outstanding effort in defence. Today sees the Eagles host the Bombers at home. Go Eagles!!

Devon Meadows PanthersA Grade - Devon Meadows put in a very consistent four quarters against an undermanned Sorrento. Some fantastic defensive efforts all over the court provided Devon Meadows with plenty of opportunities and some solid goaling finished it off. BOC - great team effort.

B Grade - Devon Meadows began steadily with a lead of 12 to 6 at the first break. Many opportunities went begging with a more even second term. Devon Meadows came out firing in the second half with great defensive pressure and better conversion to win 41 to 22. BOC - Jess Gracan

The c graders came out of the blocks firing on Saturday with a consistent and patient first quarter. We were unable to sustain this for the next three quarters fortunately doing enough to keep to lead ending the game with a 14 point lead. Hard work on and off the court should see us continuing to improving with that all important goal in sight. BOC Kat Johnson.

Sorrento SharksThe winter sun was shining in Sorrento for Round 9 verse Devon Meadows. The Under 17’s came away with another well-deserved win. Bethany Lynch stepped in to help out Tori Edwards in defence which proved to be a great combination both girls picking up a number of tips and intercepts. Emily Opie was steady through the mid court and set up some good plays through the centre court. The C team faced a strong Devon Meadows team who developed an early lead. Kayla Jansen played well in goals and set up some good attacking play. The B team put up a good fight, scores were tight in the first half however Devon Meadows stepped it up in the second half and secured the win. Sorrento struggled under tight physical defence and our shooters found it difficult to convert under the defensive pressure. However Jacqui Forrester came in to goals in the second half and contributed to some great attacking play. Thank you to Tanya who stepped in to help out for the day. The A team struggled under the strength of a skilful Devon Meadows Team however maintained a positive attitude until the final whistle.

Pearcedale PanthersPearcedale Netball Club U17’s came up against Red Hill today and it was a fight to the very end. The whole way through the game was goal for goal. The girls pulled together as a team and pulled out all the stops to once again come out on top winning by 1 point on the siren! Very proud of the girls efforts this weekend. The C girls were beaten by a very strong Red Hill side.Even though our girls tried hard our structures and disciplines fell by the wayside. Going forward this is a loss we’ll learn a lot from.Look forward to our next challenge.BOC - MichelleOur B Girls had a win over Red Hill. After leading by 8 during the 2nd Quarter, we were over run in the next 5 min to be one goal down. After a great call by Janelle ( BOC) our girls regrouped and never looked back. Never take anything for granted. Minds need to be on the job for 100% of game time.A grade tried their hardest however were outclassed by Red Hill on the day. Unfortunately our A grade lacked numbers and the height difference was evident not only at each end but through the mid court. It was disappointing. However I was pleased that Katie Mitchell and Emma Williamson started to work things out! Keep working hard and hopefully things will start to happen!

Rye DemonsIts round 10 and we are over half way through the season. It’s time for us to knuckle down and get some consistent wins if we want to play finals. We had three great wins last week against Hastings and we need to back it up this week. Last week the 17’s had a rest so our C grade team set the ball rolling winning well with a 56 to 2 goal win. The girls started the game well and never looked back. The mother daughter team of Jodie and Olivia combined well in the goals and they were well backed up by the rest of the team. BOC Olivia Stephens. The B grade continued the good form with another convincing win, 51 to 9. This was a crucial game for the team and they showed some of what we all see they are capable of. Keep the momentum going. BOC Lucy Millar. Then A grade won with a massive score of 79 to 16. This was a solid four quarters of netball. BOC Ellen Millar. Three from three...great day! Good luck today girls at Pearcedale. Week by week we all need to perform at our best. Go Dees!

Frankston BombshellsBefore we get straight into the court action we’d like to congratulate Jen & Matt on their baby action. Who welcomed little Princess Parker into the world on Sunday. Mother & baby doing well, so well in fact that Mother (Jen Simmons) is sliding into a body suit this week for her comeback game against Sommi. Look out ladies! Last we hosted Rosebud. The C girls got us off to a great start by coming away with a good win. You girls really bound together as a team and played some great netball. Keep this up next week and the weeks to follow. Special mentions to Larissa & Georgia. B grade girls continued the day well by another great win against the buds. Your defense pressure and attack on the wall was relentless. Best ons went to Lauren & Nat. A grade went down to the buds but are still continuing to show they can play some high standard of netball together. Best ons to Jordy & Lara. C reserve took on the top team at Jubilee and came away with a 2 goal win. You girls put on a great display for netball and are improving every week. Best ons to Tori & Rob. This week we take on Somerville @ Somerville. Let’s work hard Bombshells. TICKETS for the ball still available for purchase & Lara still hasn’t found a wedding dress if anyone has one lying around.

Rosebud BudsWell, this weekend was certainly one worth commenting on: Whilst our C grade girls were outmatched on the day, our B grade girls put up a good fight. With a few regulars out, Hailey B stepped up to play defence and dominated the ring. Unfortunately all the turnovers she created were not converted and as such the girls went down, with another convincing loss.

A grade on the other hand, worked like a well oiled machine. The late inclusion of Sam H has given the girls the boost they needed in defence (sadly, she is, however, only a fraction taller than the rest of us). Lauren R and Ash F were well and truly back in form this week, leading the team to a long awaited victory against the ‘Bombers’. Well done to all girls, and we are definitely hoping for continued success (fingers crossed).

Hastings BluesIt was always set to be a tough day of netball heading down to Rye. They are strong & experienced across all grades.C grade are trying hard every week and a never give up attitude is a credit to the girls. A couple of the girls had a chance to play out of position and give new ones a try which had unearthed some newcombinations. B grade had some great patches of play are starting to combine as a team well. The scoreline certainly doesn’t reflect how much of the ball and the play we had.A grade put up a great fight, if only we could keep up the intensity of our first quarter throughout the game we would be right up there! We had plenty of the play and showed great tenacity.Coaches awards this weekC grade - Brooke Easy & Jess ReidB grade - Heaven Hansen & Zara HaycroftA grade - Shaye William & Ebony ClarkGo Blueys!
