HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM?

•What are the possible sources of gas?

•Who has experience about Gas Management Systems and can advise me?

•What information do I need about LC/MS Gas requirements and where will I find it?

•What are the decisions I need to make?

•Which one will be best for my lab / my LCMS system(s)?

•Are there any other considerations I should think about?

•Who will install the gas management system?

•What if I have problems and it stops working?

•How much will it cost to run?

WHAT INFORMATION DO I NEED ABOUT LC/MS GAS REQUIREMENTS AND WHERE WILL I FIND IT?

• Consult the LCMS manufacturer/gas supplier

• Confirm the gas requirements (nitrogen, air, other?)

• Confirm the required specifications for flow and pressure

• Are there any other special gas requirements?

• Consult the LCMS site prep guide if available

• Is there a defined level of noise acceptable in the laboratory

NOW YOU HAVE A GOOD IDEA OF WHAT YOU REQUIRE.

Page 7: Peak Scientific Instruments Ltd HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM? What are the possible sources of gas? Who has experience about Gas Management.

WHICH GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM WILL BE BEST FOR MY LAB AND MY LCMS SYSTEMS?

•In house gas

•Liquid Nitrogen Dewar

•Cylinder gas

•Industrial gas generator

•Laboratory gas generator

SO HOW DO I DECIDE WHICH ONE?

Peak Scientific Instruments Ltd

Peak Scientific Instruments Ltd

WHAT ARE THE DECISIONS I NEED TO MAKE?

“What is right for the application and your lab?”

• Stand alone gas generator for each LCMS in lab (using existing house air)?

• Stand alone gas generator with separate external air compressor?

• Laboratory gas generator with built in compressors for each LCMS ?

• How many LCMS systems will require gas?

• Is this likely to change (increase) in the near future?

• If more than one LCMS, will they all have the same gas requirements?

• Are they located in the same area/laboratory?

• What are the distances from generator to LCMS?

• Are there any special Health & Safety Regulations to be considered?

NOW YOU KNOW WHAT DECISIONS NEED TO BE MADE!

USING EXISTING HOUSE AIR SUPPLY

. CAUTION!• If you select a gas generator for use with an existing house air

supply, make sure the air is of good quality and has the capacity to supply the correct flow and pressure to the gas generator.

• You must also ensure that the air supply will not contaminate the generator or the LC/MS System – it must be

Clean, Dry and Oil – free

• The generator should only ever be connected to a clean, dry and oil-free source of compressed air. If in any doubt, do not use this source of air.

• A regulated minimum pressure of 120 psig is required for the generator to operate correctly.

NB. Contaminated air supplies are a common source of problems!

Page 10: Peak Scientific Instruments Ltd HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM? What are the possible sources of gas? Who has experience about Gas Management.

Peak Scientific Instruments Ltd

USING EXISTING OR NEW PIPEWORK?

.• Is the generator to be connected to existing or new pipework?

• If you plan to use existing pipework, has it been pressure/leak tested by a competent, qualified technician?

• Can you guarantee that it is clean and free of contaminants?

• What is the i.d/o.d of the tubing?

• Do you know which material the tubing is made from?

• If in any doubt, do not use this existing pipework – use new tubing of the correct internal diameter and material type.

NB. Contaminated pipework is a common source of problems!

CAUTION!

WHICH GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM WILL BE BEST FOR MY LAB AND MY LCMS SYSTEMS?

• In house gas x

• Liquid Nitrogen Dewar x

• Cylinder gas x

• Industrial gas generator √

• Laboratory gas generator √

So if I choose a generator, what are the options and how do I decide which is best for me?

Page 12: Peak Scientific Instruments Ltd HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM? What are the possible sources of gas? Who has experience about Gas Management.

Peak Scientific Instruments Ltd

SO HOW DO I DECIDE WHICH GENERATOR?

Let me show you five gas generator possibilities:

Single LC/MS gas generator

1. With internal (built-in) compressors2. With separate air compressor system3. With separate air system and possibility to upgrade

Multi LC/MS gas generator

4. With separate air system and individual nitrogen generators (one for each LCMS system)5. With separate air system and one high capacity nitrogen generator (enough to supply all systems running at full

flow simultaneously)

WHAT IF THE GENERATOR STOPS WORKING?

• You need to think ahead how you will maintain your system

• What is your anticipated usage?

• What is the required uptime?

• How many PMs will be required annually?

• Will you buy multiple years service up front?

• Is there a special budget required?

• Is a service plan good value for money versus a dewar?

• What is the return on investment over 5 years?

• Can I work on a time and materials basis?

Page 22: Peak Scientific Instruments Ltd HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM? What are the possible sources of gas? Who has experience about Gas Management.

Peak Scientific Instruments Ltd

WHAT IF THE GENERATOR STOPS WORKING?

• Peak Scientific service plans available to purchase along with generator or

retrospectively

• Peak Scientific takes full responsibility for all generator service

• All work carried out by Peak Scientific engineers

• Priority response for clinical customers or customers with Peak Scientific

complete service plan or warranty

• Normally within 48 hours or sooner depending on customer location

THE DESIGN OF LC/MS SYSTEMS CONTINUES TO EVOLVE VERY RAPIDLY AND THEY ALL HAVE DIFFERENT GAS REQUIREMENTS

Scientists are continually looking for

•Better qualitative and quantitative performance

•More sensitivity

•Improved resolution

•Better productivity and efficiency

•New LCMS models are introduced every year

This often means Peak Scientific needs to produce a new generator to match the needs of the latest LCMS system

THE PEAK SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO GAS GENERATORS FOR LC/MS

• Which LCMS manufacturer and model?

• Designs and specifications vary from model to model and so do the gas requirements!

• What is the type of instrument?

• Single or triple quad, TOF etc...?

• What is the application – ESi or APCi or both?

In summary –

The Peak Scientific approach is to design and manufacture bespoke generators which exactly match the gas requirements of the mass spectrometer application

Page 27: Peak Scientific Instruments Ltd HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT GAS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM? What are the possible sources of gas? Who has experience about Gas Management.
