It’s not About the tIMe you spend here. It’s About the experIence.

The Office of Campus Activities & Programs (CAP) provides pathways to successful out-of-the-classroom experiences and ways to find your community here on campus. We know that getting involved can help you love your time here at UNCG and progress towards the goal of graduation. We encourage students to create meaningful relationships, explore interests and develop a sense of self and an appreciation for their community. Our student organizations promote leadership development, critical thinking and interpersonal skills. The majority of activities and events planned by the CAP office are paid for by the Student Activity fee and come at no additional cost to students. Come on out, join the fun, and see how your Activity Fee is being used!

WHAT’S NEW IN HOUSING AND RESIDENCE LIFE?Moving Towards a Wireless-Only EnvironmentOver the past semester, Housing and ITS have been diligently working to develop and improve the wireless environment in the residence halls. Our residents consume 90% of UNCG’s total wireless traffi c and ITS manages an extensive amount of network hardware to provide full wireless coverage to all residents. This past summer ITS changed wireless services to function more like an auxiliary service. With the support of ITS, housing decided the only affordable option for data in the residence halls was UNCG Wireless. Housing and ITS have a joint goal to create a wireless environment that is capable of functioning as the sole provider for data connectivity in the halls.

Moving to a wireless-only environment requires extensive planning and preparations for both Housing and ITS. ITS is developing plans to increase the wireless coverage, new support options for wireless issues, and upgrading core networking equipment. These upgrades are needed to accommodate higher bandwidth usage and increased device connections. ITS saw an increase of 4,000 devices connected to the wireless network between May and August of this year.

Like any contracted service, Housing is concerned about the quality of support, wireless availability, and compatibility with all Internet-ready devices. Housing has developed a survey to gauge resident satisfaction with UNCG wireless as a service. Surveys will be sent multiple times and used to benchmark improvements throughout the academic year. Residence Life will also become a sound board and advocate for residents having wireless issues. To accommodate the 4% of residents who don’t use the wireless network, USB Wireless Adapters are being tested and a new “Home Device” option is being added.

Home devices can connect to the wireless network but aren’t able to use UNCG Secure Authentication. Smart TVs, game consoles, Apple TVs, and Blue-ray players are all capable of connecting to the Internet and residents have requested they be able to connect these devices. ITS will support home devices at some point during the Spring 2014 semester and residents will be able to connect up to three home devices each.

Housing and Residence Life strives to provide an environment that is conducive to academic success, personal development, and social growth. UNCG would be the fi rst housing department in the state to support a wireless-only

“Paint the Town” was a campus-wide event hosted by Campus Activities from October 21-26, which offered an award to the office showing the most UNCG, “Blue and Gold” spirit.

Student staff members enjoyed working together to express their creativity and show their UNCG spirit. This was a fun, team-building adventure for the Housing and Residence Life administrative staff. Their enthusiasm and efforts did not go unrecognized, as HRL was awarded the 2013 “Most Spirited” trophy.

Consider Campus Housing for Individual or Group NeedsThere are times throughout the year when people other than students can use the housing facilities. Following are opportunities for faculty and staff to reserve rooms in campus housing for individuals or groups:

1) The Spring Garden Guest Apartments. HRL manages three guest

apartments, available for personal use by University members, in need of a convenient location for study, teaching, or service. Apartments are fully furnished, include weekly linen changes as needed, and are available for $685 per month. Please contact

336-334-5636 for details.

2) Camps and Conferences. UNCG faculty and staff have the option to host groups in the residence halls from May 15-August 1. HRL accommodations are more affordable than most area hotels and provide easy access to other areas of the UNCG campus. The summer conference staff is trained in customer service and strives to provide good service to groups staying in the residence halls. To find more information about what’s available, please visit the HRL website (hrl.uncg.edu) under the “Conferences” tab. The reservation form goes live January 15, 2014, and needs to be submitted by March 1, 2014, for the upcoming summer.

The Housing and Residence Life Academic Excellence Committee is reaching out to residence hall students in a variety of ways this spring. Committee members recognized more than 2,200 residence hall students who earned at least a 3.0 GPA in the fall 2013 semester with a congratulatory email. These students represent more than 40% of the community currently living on campus.

Committee members also reached out to just under 900 students who had a 2.0 GPA or less. Each of these students was

HRL Staff INSpIRed by “paINt tHe towN”This experience inspired HRL to decorate the office for other occasions—the first of which was Thanksgiving.

Staff members created a “Thankful Tree” with blank leaves that were added to the tree as people included descriptions of things for which they give thanks. Leaves were counted before winter break and for each completed leaf, a can of food will be donated to the Spartan Food Pantry in January. The HRL staff looks forward to future occasions and events to connect the office staff and guests in this creative way.

Academic Excellence on Campusgiven a list of campus resources to utilize to improve their academic performance.

In addition, each Coordinator for Residence Life (CRL)/Residential College Coordinator (RCC) offered to help students create individualized academic action plans. Many of these students will have their CRL/RCC as an SAS 100 instructor in the spring 2014 semester.

For more information about this program, please contact Erica Farrar, Senior Assistant Director for Residence Life and Academic Enhancement at [email protected].
