Despite much progress in the field of international development, humanity continues to face tremendous global challenges. Water problems such as access to safe drinking water and reliable sanitation affect about half of the world’s population. Nearly 1.1 billion people do not have access to clean drinking water. Two point six billion people do not have access to proper sanitation. An even more disturbing fact is that unsafe water, inadequate sanitation and lack of hygiene claim the lives of 1.6 million children under the age of five every year.
The world’s energy story isn’t much better. About 1.4 billion people lack access to direct electricity. Two point seven billion people still rely on traditional cooking methods utilizing biomass energy. We all know that cooking shouldn’t kill. But it is estimated that the household air pollution resulting from biomass use will result in more than 1.5 million deaths per year by 2030.
These statistics reveal a dire reality, but there’s still good news to share.

EWB-USA programs originate with a community self-identifying their needs and requesting support from EWB-USA. Our members work with the community to assess, design, implement and monitor appropriate solutions.
The EWB-USA Lehigh Valley Professional Chapter’s (EWB-USA LVP) partnership with the Centennial Secondary School in Mattru Jong, Sierra Leone, exemplifies the breadth of our community development model. After the Sierra Leone Civil War destroyed the school, the EWB-USA LVP Chapter united with the community to design a multidisciplinary program to improve all facets of the school’s infrastructure – from its sanitation facilities to its electricity to its water supply.
Today, the school is reopened and currently educates approximately 1,500 students.

The 19 full-time staff members at EWB-USA’s headquarters in Denver, Colo., facilitate a robust quality assurance and quality control process that enables our chapters to work on hundreds of projects across the globe each year.
The roles they play include:• Provide education and guidance on each state of a project’s development• Review all project designs for technical feasibility• Train chapter project teams for fluency in EWB-USA policies, project process and travel
requirements• Ensure proper financial governance is maintained over all funds associated with the
organization, including our 303 chapters

EWB-USA partners strategically fund growth, financial sustainability and social impact—ensuring that the organization continues to flourish as a high-performing nonprofit organization.
Why does this matter? Unrestricted investments in EWB-USA’s General Fund provide flexibility, stability and capacity to the core of the organization. These investments cover everything from the quality assurance and quality control of our programs to staff salaries and rent.
The program is a biannual funding opportunity extended to our members in both the spring and fall. The program is increasingly more competitive and higher-funded each year, with a 74%
increase in grant applicants and a 357% increase in the dollar amount of awards given from 2010 to 2012.

EWB-USA’s Project Grants Program presents funders with the unique opportunity to provide direct support to EWB-USA projects in communities around the world. Participation in this program connects corporations and individuals to the pulse of EWB-USA in an engaging grant process comprised of review, relationship-building and reporting.
