Dear Parishioners and Friends,The parish activities of the last ten days have been very eventful. Over 425 people, spanning three different generations, gathered for our first faith formation learning experience of the year. After sharing a meal, they attended age appropriate small groups to learn about and discuss the Ten Commandments, with a focus from the perspective of Jesus’ greatest commandment to love God and one another. The three day extravaganza could only have happened with the help of so many volunteers. Thanks to all who served and were served. The food was excellent.

This past Monday a great parish event was held in support of the Fr. James A. Field Memorial Scholarship Fund. The golfers had the best weather possible to play a mid-October round of golf. A good number of parishioners came out for a great dinner that filled the Bellevue Golf Club’s dining room. I was impressed with the great amount of items for the silent auction. Although all the expenses are not in as yet, it appears that the Scholarship Fund may have netted well over $10,000. A special thanks the Joe Nevin and his

small band of dedicated volunteers for hosting this weekend event.

On Tuesday the parish welcomed a number of new liturgical ministers to serve the community as lectors and Eucharistic ministers. They, with the help of the many current liturgical ministers, are prepared to serve all of us and the Lord as they responded to the Baptismal call to service.

November is just around the corner, so may I remind you that we will once again be setting up an altar of remembrance for your loved ones. You are encouraged to bring in a photo of those who have died to be displayed and prayed for during the month of November. A special Mass will be held on Wednesday November 2 at 9:00am to commemorate All Souls Day. Please plan on attending.

May peace be given to you.

Fr. Ron

GENERATIONS OF FAITH: MORALITY~RE-CAP SESSION 1The first GOF adult session on morality focused on the Law as an underpinning for the rest of this year’s learnings. We contrasted the Old Testament’s 10 Commandments with the New Testament’s Law of Love for God and neighbor. For each, we reviewed the historical context in which the law arose, the intent of the law, and the spirit running throughout. While identifying the challenges we face in living out the Law of Love, we noted the helps we have in having the right motivation, the support of our faith community, and of course the Spirit of God. Upcoming sessions will focus on sin, conscience, and the good life of Catholicism.

The Family Groups discussed with same topics; learning about the origins of the 10 Commandments and the Law of Love. They also spent some time brainstorming ways in which they keep and break the commandments. The Teen Group focused on how the Commandments relate to their lives in the complicated world in which we live.

Thanks to all the volunteers who gave of their time so generously to act as presenters to the learning groups and to successfully feed over 400 people. A special thanks to Doug Hart and Diane and Jim Guiry, who directed operations in the kitchen for the three meals!

Curious about GOF? Want to learn about and enrich your faith? It’s never too late to join us. You can register and pay via our website, or registration forms are available at church. The calendar for the year is also available both on the website and at church. This is the link to register:

30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The Cry of the PoorA most unassuming Jesuit brother died a number of years ago. His name was Julius Petrik, always known to us as just Brother Petrik. I miss him. He had been a quiet presence ever since I was a very young man in the Jesuits. He did not attract attention. He took pains to avoid it.

I think such meekness is the key to this Sunday’s scripture.

I wrote the following reflections after attending his funeral Mass, which took place a few days before the 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time, with the readings we will hear. They were perfect for him. He was 94 years old, and the very best sense of the word, he was ordinary.

. I N C A R N A T I O N P A R I S H

6

Page 8: Parish of the Incarnation of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ...Parish of the Incarnation of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Melrose and Saugus October 23, 2016 30th Sunday in Ordinary

In one sense I never knew him, such was his silence. His gentle eyes pointed down, he carried out his tasks without fuss, and—for a long time, maybe always—he ate his meals by himself. I suppose some would just have called him a “character,” or have branded him as pathologically shy.

My intuition gave me a different message. I sensed something very holy about Brother. As the years went by I would take care to greet him when I would meet him and he would smile with a wide grin and greet me back with real gladness. We would exchange some small talk and then each go back to our tasks. His being an introvert took second place to the palpable spirit of love within him.I speak of this good man not to publicize him, something he would have quietly refused, but because my heart is more at ease for my encounters with him. In a word, Julius was a humble man. His prayer surely must have reached God. He served gladly.

I think such meekness is the key to this Sunday’s scripture. Listen to what the First Reading says:

The one who serves God willingly is heard;his petition reaches the heavens. The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds;it does not rest till it reaches its goal, nor will it withdraw till the Most High responds, judges justly and affirms the right, and the Lord will not delay.

Prayer that pierces the clouds and does not rest till it finds its goal! With these words my mind trips forward to the notion of power: anyone who can force his prayers through to heaven must be able to get everything he wants.

At least it is tempting to think that way. But look closely. The prayer that finds heaven

is that of the lowly. It stands before God’s throne not because it is forceful or adamant but because it embodies the hushed spirit of truth. It whispers humble needs to the very one who can answer them. It has no hidden purpose.Which of the following two people do you think embodies such lowliness? The Pharisee?

O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity—greedy, dishonest, adulterous—or even like this tax collector;

or the Publican?

O God, be merciful to me a sinner.

We know what Jesus thinks. In the Gospel he says, “I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Whatever internal battles Brother Petrik may have faced, I thank God that I was blessed to receive his gracious, shy, unassuming love.

I would love to be like him.

Materials are in the Church or available at our Faith Formation Office through Ann Lahiff.

ORDER of CHRISTIAN FUNERALSWe will work with you to plan your own funeral liturgy or that of a loved one, and are prepared to celebrate the Vigil, also known as the “Wake,” in the Church building for those who choose.
