UTILITY GRADE APPLICATIONS

Page 6: Pansonic Battery Storage Systems

• Renewable energy sources such as sun and wind power can cause instability as there may be fluctuations in the power they produce.

• Smart Energy Battery Storage Systems act as a stabilizer for renewable energy.

PANASONIC - TOYOTA PRIUS

• Battery pack of the 2nd generation Toyota Prius • Consists of 28 Panasonic prismatic nickel metal hydride modules—each

containing six 1.2 volt cells—connected in series to produce a nominal voltage of 201.6 volts.

• The total number of cells is 168, compared with 228 cells packaged in 38 modules in the first generation Prius. The pack is positioned behind the back seat

PANASONIC OUTPUT & SUPPLY

• Panasonic global capacity for automotive prismatic lithium ion batteries has surged from just 100,000 cells a month in 2010 to 2 million cells a month today.

• Capacity figures for cylindrical lithium ion batteries are almost exclusively a single automotive customer: Tesla

PANASONIC RAMPS UP PRODUCTION

• Panasonic Corp. plans a big increase in lithium ion battery capacity for both hybrid and electric vehicles, including the Tesla Model S sedan.

• Panasonic will add a fourth line at its Kasai plant in Hyogo prefecture, just west of Osaka. That factory makes prismatic lithium ion batteries for Toyota Motor Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Audi AG.

• It will add a line at its Sominoe plant in Osaka, which makes cylindrical lithium ion batteries for Tesla Motors Inc. alongside batteries for personal computers.

• It will begin cylindrical battery production for cars at its Kaizuka plant, also in Osaka.

• Panasonic has been the sole battery supplier for the Model S, but Tesla is in talks with Samsung SDI of South Korea.Reference - http://www.autonews.com/article/20131021/OEM06/310219870/panasonic-to-increase-its-battery-
