Organization is the integration of various departments and its functions. An

organization is a group of people that together have a social agreement to dispense asks

for a goal they all want to achieve. Organization studies are sometimes known as

“Organizational Science”. It encompasses the systematic study and careful application of

knowledge about how people act within the organization. Simply it deals with critical

evaluation and analysis of all aspects of a particular firm. When studying an organization,

we will learn three different perspective; process related perspective, functional

perspective and institutional perspective. It helps in understanding the organization better

and can become familiar with its function.

Ayurveda has widely recognized as a system of natural health care congenial to

the health needs of people from all over the world. Because of the traditional values an

increasing awareness, now Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Industry is in its flourishing stage.

Ayurveda is getting more importance in world wide. Here comes the importance of

studying an organization in the Ayurvedic Industry.

The organization study has been conducted in Pankajakasthuri Herbals India Pvt

Ltd (PKHIL), which is situated in Poovachal 13 kms far from Trivandrum city. The study

provides an opportunity to know, observe, learn, collect and analyze the vision and

mission. The particular study gives a clear idea about the functions, practice and

delegation of authority of PKHIL and also strength and the major issues facing the

company by critically analyzing the issues.

The main focus of the Pankajakasthuri Herbals India Pvt Ltd is on Ayurveda.

Now Pankajakasthuri is in the second position in Ayurvedic medicine industry, just

below the Dabour, which is popularized in the pharmaceutical industry. In short the aim

of this organization is to maintain the health of healthy people and to cure the diseases of

sick people.

AYURVEDA

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term, made up of the words "ayus" and "veda." "Ayus"

means life and "Veda" means knowledge or science. The term "ayurveda" thus means 'the

knowledge of life' or 'the science of life'. The aim of this system is to prevent illness, heal

the sick and preserve life. According to the ancient Ayurvedic scholar Charaka, "ayu"

comprises the mind, body, senses and the soul. Widely regarded as the oldest form of

healthcare in the world, Ayurveda is an intricate medical system that originated in India

thousands of years ago. The fundamentals of Ayurveda can be found in Hindu scriptures

called the Vedas — the ancient Indian books of wisdom. The Rig Veda, which was

written over 6,000 years ago, contains a series of prescriptions that can help humans

overcome various ailments.

Ayurveda is based on the premise that the universe is made up of five elements:

air, fire, water, earth and ether. These elements are represented in humans by three

"doshas", or energies: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. When any of the doshas accumulate in the

body beyond the desirable limit, the body loses its balance. Every individual has a

distinct balance, and our health and well-being depend on getting a right balance of the

three doshas ("tridoshas"). Ayurveda suggests specific lifestyle and nutritional guidelines

to help individuals reduce the excess dosha.

Ayurveda has been in use since our Vedic period. The name Ayurveda was

evolved from one the Veda called Adarvavedham. Being made from natural ingredients,

ayurveda is a very effective medicine for even incurable diseases. Strict adherence of

specific dosages, following the correct food regimen and the deep understanding of diseases etc

make it possible to find solutions s for many incurable diseases. It is possible to cure

chronic diseases irrespective of the climate conditions if the above conditions are strictly

followed. The term Ayur means duration of span of life. Veda means unimpeachable

knowledge. The common translation of ayurveda is science of life. The earliest recorded

knowledge about ayurveda is founded in Rig-Veda and the Adharva Veda, both a second

millennium BC. The Adharva Veda lists eight divisions of ayurveda: internel medicine,

surgery of head and neck, ophthalmology, surgery, toxicology, psychiatry, gerontology

or science of recognition and the science of fertility. Ayurveda assures treatment of any

diseases without any side effect in the future. It is a holistic medical system maintains

good health through the harmonies coordination among the mind, body, spirit and

environment. Today Ayurveda being the world wide because of the side effect of the

modern drugs. We Indian should be proud enough to be privileged to have our country as

the motherland of Ayurveda.

AYURVEDIC MEDICINE INDUSTRY IN INDIA

Ayurvedic medicines are produced by several thousand companies in India, but most

of them are quite small, including numerous neighborhood pharmacies that compound

ingredients to make their own remedies. It is estimated that the total value of products

from the entire Ayurvedic production in India is on the order of one billion dollars (U.S.).

The industry has been dominated by less than a dozen major companies for decades,

joined recently by a few others that have followed their lead, so that there are today 30

companies doing a million dollars or more per year in business to meet the growing

demand for Ayurvedic medicine. The products of these companies are included within

the broad category of "fast moving consumer goods" (FMCG; which mainly involves

foods, beverages, toiletries, cigarettes, etc.). Most of the larger Ayurvedic medicine

suppliers provide materials other than Ayurvedic internal medicines, particularly in the

areas of foods and toiletries (soap, toothpaste, shampoo, etc.), where there may be some

overlap with Ayurveda, such as having traditional herbal ingredients in the composition

of toiletries.

The key suppliers in Ayurveda are Dabur, Baidyanath, and Zandu, which together

have about 85% of India's domestic market.

Sri Baidyanath Ayurvedic Bhawan Ltd.

It was founded in 1917 in Calcutta, and specializes in Ayurvedic medicines,

though it has recently expanded into the FMCG sector with cosmetic and hair care

products; one of its international products is Shikakai (soap pod) Shampoo. Baidyanath

has a sales volume of about 350 million dollars, but most of the product sales are in the

cosmetic range. The company reports having over 700 Ayurvedic products, made at 10

manufacturing centers, with 1,600 employees. Included items are herbal teas, patent

medicines, massage oils, and chyawanprash.

Zandu Pharmaceutical

It was incorporated in Bombay in 1919, named after an 18th-century Ayurvedic.

The company focuses primarily on Ayurvedic products (in 1930, pharmaceuticals were

added, but the pharmaceutical division was separated off about 30 years later).

However, today Zandu has a chemicals division and cosmetics division. Its total sales

volume is about 45 million dollars. One of its current projects is to develop a dopamine

drug from a plant extract, applying for new drug status in the U.S.

The Himalaya Drug Company

It was established in 1934 in Bangalore. It currently has a business level of about

500 million dollars and has a U.S. distribution division (Himalaya USA). It is known in

the U.S. for the product Liv-52, marketed as a liver protector and therapy for liver

diseases like viral hepatitis; the product was first marketed in India in 1955.

Charak Pharmaceuticals

It was founded in 1947, and currently has three distribution centers in India; it

produces liquids, tablets, and veterinary supplies. It has gained a large advantage with

its new product Evanova, a preparation containing 33 herbs and minerals and non-

hormonal active ingredients used as a menopause treatment alternative to HRT. Soya is

one of the main ingredients in this product. The product also contains Ayurvedic herbs

that act like selective estrogen receptor modulators as well as asparagus root (shatavari),

which reduces the frequency and intensity of hot flashes.

Vicco Laboratories

It was established in 1958. It mainly produces topical therapies based on Ayurveda

and is best known internationally for its toothpaste product, Vajradanti, which has been

marketed in the U.S. for more than 25 years.

The Emami Group

It was founded in 1974, provides a diverse range of products, doing 110 million

dollars of business annually, though only a portion is involved with Ayurvedic products,

through its Himani line; the company is mainly involved with toiletries and cosmetics,

but also provides Chyawanprash and other health products.

Aimil Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

It was incorporated in 1984 and engaged in manufacturing and sale of both generic

and proprietary Ayurvedic medicines, with a business level of about 20 million dollars

annually. Its wide range of Ayurvedic herbal formulations, covering most therapeutic

segments, was honored by the Indian government's National Award for Quality Herbal

Preparations and National Award for R & D in the year 2002. It is known for its

proprietary formulas for hepatitis, diabetes, menstrual disorders, digestive disorders, and

concern. It sets the goals and objectives to be accomplished and formulate

plans and decisions. The administrative officer heads this department in

PKHIL and is supported by assistant administrative officer. There are other

two office assistants working as subordinates under assistant administrative

officer. At PKHIL, the administrative department looks after the personnel

special fund called Labour Welfare Fund´ for assisting the employees in their emergency

need of money. The contribution towards this fund is usually in the following way, 8 rupees is

All the purchases for the company are made by the purchase department. The

purchasing function has emerged as a specialized organizational activity. The success of

the purchasing department depends upon the quality of the inputs and also upon the

ability of the purchasing department personnel to analyze the inputs to fullest extent.

Mr. Jayasankar heads purchase department. He has an Assistant manager

followed by two assistants. The company makes all purchase only after obtaining purchase

requisition from the stores department. Purchase department has appropriate store code for

all its raw materials and for packing materials like pet jar bottles, aluminium foils, empty capsules,

duplex boards, etc. cartons and wrappers are purchased on job order basis.

Most of the raw materials are purchased from outside Kerala, especially from the

northern parts of India. Some are cultivated in the company’s own 13 acre herbal garden.

Purchases are made both on cash and credit from external sources. For every credit

purchase, the suppliers usually give thirty or more days to make the payment.

The store department generate purchase indent when the stock level maintained at

the store reaches the re-order level.

The purchase indent is handed over to the purchase department, which in turn

generates purchase order; with this purchase order materials are ordered, Goods

inward note is conducted in the incoming material.

Quality check is conducted in the incoming material to check whether the material

stand up to the standard stipulated under the acceptable norms. Then they will

This department is headed by the production manager Mr. Gopakumar and

immediately followed by the assistant manager. The production supervisor and packing

manager is subordinate to the assistant manager and they are assisted by production

assistant respectively. There are separate workers for both production and packing.

The various products manufactured are subject to inspection by the quality

inspector to ensure that they are up to stand. There are nearly 50 workers, both male and female,

working under the production and packing section respectively. These workers are paid on

monthly basis, for any overtime works, extra charges are paid and transport facilities are

also provided. Other facilities such as canteen and crèche are also to the workers.

MAINTENANCE WING

Maintenance is very important to extend the useful life of an asset. Maintenance

has not only to reduce scheduled stoppages and breakdowns by frequent performance

checking, testing and providing inspections and skillful repair when required to ensure

better service, availability and reliability. The effectiveness of production is highly

dependent on the quality of maintenance service quality. For the proper maintenance and

repair of plant and machinery, a separate wing functions under the control of General

Manager. The principal objectives of the wing are:

1. To maximize the availability and reliability of assets.

2. To extend the useful life of assets by minimizing wear and tear and deterioration.

3. To ensure operational readiness of all equipment for emergency use at all

times.

4. To ensure safety of personnel using facilities.

This wing includes fitter, electrician and plumber. This wing carries out

both preventive maintenance and breakdown maintenance. Preventive maintenance is

done weekly, monthly as well as half yearly and breakdown maintenance is done when

required. With the permission of General Manager, outside agencies are considered for

special cases and they are paid separately.

PACKING SECTION

Packing is defined as the general group of activities in product planning, which

involve designing and producing the containers or wrappers for product. There is a

separate section for the packing of the products. Certain products such as cosmetics and

soaps are packed in attractive wrappers in order to draw the attention of the consumers.

Manufacturing date, Expiry date, etc is printed on the wrappers. In India, Pankajakasturi

uses tables of different stages. Important decisions regarding packing and labeling is

taken by top management. The ultimately resulted in cost reduction.

The modern market is consumer oriented market and it deals with consumers. A

Marketing department is the nerve system if PKHIL. Marketing manager Mr.

V.Gopakumar manages the function of this department with the assistance of area sales

manager and assistant marketing manager. Area sales manager is intended to control the

external functions of marketing. The sales officer follows the area sales manager and

assistant marketing manager and sales representative is the immediate subordinate

of sales officer.

The main function of this department is to ensure uninterrupted distribution

of products to customers. It makes a market study with the help of outside agencies

to know the demand for their respective products and supply is made accordingly.

Now they are ready to market a new product 'Pankajakasthuri'- smoking tablet.

Their main product Pankajakasthuri Breath EC is supplied to almost every states within

Finance is the life blood of every business. Hence finance department has

director Mr. Sreekumar controls finance department. The accountant manager is

Pankajakasturi Herbal Research Foundation was established by PKHIL for

the purpose of developing Ayurvedic medicines. The R & D department is well equipped to carry out

any type of research in the field of ayurveda. Research department is the core area

of PKHIL as all products are developed there under keen supervision of Dr.Hareendran.

The Managing Director Dr. Hareendran Nair is the chief of R & D department.

Under R & D department, here are five departments-Dept of Pharmacology, Dept

of Botany, Dept. of Chemistry, Dept. of Quality and control, Dept. of Pharmaceutics.

Dept. of Pharmacology and Dept. of Botany has two immediate research assistants

following by attendors. Dept. of Chemistry has two divisions-Dept. of Biochemistry &

Dept. of Analytical Chemistry. Each these sub departments has two research assistants.

Then Dept. of Quality control and Dept. of Pharmaceutics, each followed by two lab

assistants.

All products of PKHIL are the output of this department. Some of these products

cough Mix, Ilogen Tablets , Urotone capsules, etc.R & D department developed some

medicine for diseases like breathing disorder (Asthma),diabetes mellitus, blood pressure,

arthritis, skin diseases, cough, urinary disorder, liver disorder, fissured feet, fungal

infection ,dandruff, hair falling ,premature graying, etc.Pankajakasturi Decard is said to

an exact solution for the symptoms exhibited by SARS. All medicines so far developed

by the Dept. have undergone rigorous tests.Toxicological and clinical trial on par with

symptoms adopted by modern medicine. All products are 100% natural Ayurvedic
