The Lake Host Program by Holly Martin Well, after another busy year I wanted to give you all an idea of how successful the Lake Host program has been. The good news is that there have been no new infestations of Milfoil or any other invasive weeds in our lake or any other NH lake that has an established and active Lake Host program. The bad news is that there are new breeds of invasive species that are now threatening our waters. This year our boat inspections included checking for the Asian Clam, which has already been found in three southern NH lakes, and the Zebra Mussel. Both of these species can be found in waters bordering NH and this increases the risk that they will find their way to our beautiful lake. The di!cultly with this type of species is they are transported in the larvae state, so educating every boater that visits our lake is crucial in preventing their spread. This is where the Lake Host program comes in. A new program, CLEAN, DRAIN, AND DRY, was put into place in 2013 to counter these new challenges. The program is a simple yet e"ective way of preventing the spread of these species. It requires boaters to wash the exterior of their crafts, drain all live wells and let their boats dry for 5 days or more so that invasive weeds or species can be removed or die o" before the next visit to the lake. continued on page two

The Lake Host Program by Holly Martin

Well, after another busy year I wanted to give you all an idea of how successful the Lake Host program has been.

It requires boaters to wash the exterior of their crafts, drain all live wells and let their boats dry for 5 days or more so that invasive weeds or species can be removed or die o" before the next visit to the lake.

continued from page 1Most people when educated about the e"ects that these weeds and species can have on our lakes are glad to follow the program.

Last year we discovered yet another visitor that has made its way to Pleasant Lake, the Chinese Mystery Snail. This is an extremely large snail that came to this country in the 1800’s through San Francisco as a delicacy in Chinese restaurants. It is known to carry parasites, which can a"ect both humans and our fresh water mussels. We have been asking people to collect any snails they see in the water and throw them into the woods. These snails are brought in on boats as tiny snails. Like other plants and species, should our lake get overrun with these we can expect property values to drop and the quality of our lake to diminish. This is yet another reason why our Lake Host program is so important. If you have questions or concerns about any of these invasive species or weeds, please don’t hesitate to stop at the boat launch when our hosts are present and ask one of them for a brochure or call me and I will be glad to get one out to you.

The Lake Host program is run by volunteers during the week and paid lake hosts on the weekends. If you would like to volunteer for this or other programs sponsored by the Lake Association we would love to hear from you. Contact your Director or call me for more information. (603) 463-7496

The final program results for 2013 saw a reduction in volunteer hours from the previous year. This was in large part due to the extremely rainy weather we had at the beginning of the summer and as a result, we lost some volunteer hours. Volunteer host hours were down by 160 hours.

Volunteer Hours 2013 Volunteer Hours 2012 420 654

Paid Hours 2013 Paid Hours 2012 430 415In total, we conducted 2,172 inspections in 2013 compared to 2,529 inspections in 2012. That’s 2,172 opportunities to educate boaters and keep our lake clean!

From a financial perspective we were awarded $2,300 from a grant provided for our Lake Host program. This was based on the number of volunteer hours we accrued from the previous year, which is why it’s so important for you to participate as a volunteer if you have an opportunity to do so. Should the NH Lakes Association o"er this grant again this year, we will most certainly apply for it.

All in all we had another very successful year thanks to all of our volunteers and paid lake hosts. Look for us again in 2014!!

LIKE FINE WINE, FERD MARTIN ONLY SEEMS TO IMPROVE WITH AGE

At 85 years old, Ferd Martin continued a tradition and celebrated a milestone on the lake this past year and he did it in style, just like he’s been doing for the past 50 years here … on a slalom ski with the wind in his hair and a smile on his face!

Of course the boats have changed and the equipment is di"erent. Ten years ago he had to retire his favorite and beloved water ski, a wooden monstrosity with multi-colored boot parts that he had pieced together from other retired skis. In the end, it simply fell apart after years of trying to keep it patched together. And he’s a bit more cautious now … his last dock jump start was 5 years ago at age 80, although he blames this on the lack of acceleration that he still misses from the 1964 Correct Craft that pulled him and his family out of the water with remarkable ease for so many years.

While Ferd now spends much of his time during the winter in Florida with his wife Jan, he still loves coming to the lake every summer and he has a special place in his heart for the lake and the people he spent time with over the years. Ferd was an avid member of the Lake Association and served as a Director of the Ledges District and later as President of the association for many years. His passion for the cleanliness and quality of the lake remains as strong as it was when he was younger and he can still be seen taking a long swim along the eastern shore of the lake from time to time.

Like many other families on the lake, the torch passes to the next generation and summers are spent with children and grandchildren doing the same thing that Ferd and his family did when they were younger … swimming, teaching the young ones how to water ski, watching the family grow and simply enjoying one of the nicest places in the world to live. Nowadays, having both a son and a daughter with homes on the lake, Ferd’s biggest decision is to choose which family he will visit for the day, although they all seem to end up together at one home or the other by the day’s end. And isn’t this what makes Pleasant Lake such a very special place for all of us … families, friends and traditions that only improve with age.

Like a fine wine … like Ferd Martin.

So many stories out there that we would love to hear. Please submit your memories for publication to Linda at [email protected]
