EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S CORNER

Hello Paladin Knights-

We hope this newsletter finds you well. The beginning of the new school year has been one of our best yet! We are so proud of all the success stories from our students and staff over the last seven weeks. The level of academic engagement from our students is contagious and we can?t wait to see what our students accomplish next.

This fall has flown by and we can't believe it is already October! Fall is my favorite time of year and I love being

outside to take in all the colors and breathe in the autumn air. This season is a great time for all of us to set goals for the school year. This is why we ask our Paladin families to start checking in on their student's academic progress. For some of our students, fall is a common time to start the habit of procrastination. It's easy to get caught up in believing there is always more time to complete projects but before you know it, spring is here. Remember, it is never too soon to start checking on your student's academic progress.

With fall conferences around the corner, let?s make the commitment now to set ourselves and our students up for success. Paladin staff love holding success planning meetings and goal setting sessions with both students and their families. Please call the school today and talk with your Student Success Coordinator!

We are off to a great start of this year and we are excited to have a campus full of great students and staff!

FREE MONEY!College students love the words, ?Free M oney?. By filling out the FAFSA, students are able to get financial aid for college.  The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the primary form that colleges use to award grants, scholarships, loans and work study.  Grants and scholarships are ?free? money that don?t have to be repaid like loans do.

This year the FAFSA is available on October 1, 2016 and families can use their 2015 tax information. Students who will be graduating this year are required to complete the FAFSA as part of their College and Career

Vocational Rehabilitation Services is a State and Federal employment program that works with students and young adults who have a documented disability that might cause difficulty in learning job skills, planning for a career, and in making the transition from school to work. While students are still in high school, VR S can work with them to develop a long-term employment goal. VR S uses tools such as interest testing, career exploration activities, and counseling to provide info about employment and vocational training.

Their goal is to explore long-term employment goals and support the student in reaching them.  They are also an advocate and a source of support ? one who will be there during and after high school until the

RESTORATIVE PRACTICES

We at Paladin are undertaking a change around how we build community, support our students and hold students accountable. This process is through restorative practices which does not focus on what law or rule has been broken and how we punish the person who broke it, instead we focus on the support needed and the ways the harm can be repaired. It is our hope that as a result of this process, we move away from suspensions for certain behaviors and work towards resolving the issues while allowing our students to remain in school. In order for this to be a successful process, it is necessary for school administrators, parents and students to work together in a way that is beneficial to us all.

If any parents are willing to help with this process please give our Dean of Students, Alexis Goffe, a call!

WORLDS BEST WORKFORCEEach M N school district must develop a plan that addresses the following five goals:

1. All children are ready to start kindergarten. 2.All third-graders can read at grade level. 3.All achievement gaps between students are

closed. 4.All students are ready for career and/or

post-secondary education. 5.All students graduate from high school.

Why is Minnesota focused on this idea?

For M innesota to be competitive, we must have students who are career and college ready, poised to lead the state?s workforce. This is important for a number of reasons:

- Our population is aging.- Seventy percent (70%) of jobs will require

more than a high school diploma by 2018. - There are a lack of qualified candidates to fill

many good-paying jobs. - The fastest growing segment of our future

workforce is students of color, who currently have the state?s lowest graduation rate.

- M innesota has one of the worst black-white achievement gaps in the country.

An Annual WBWF/Title One Advisory Committee and Community Planning meeting will be held on Thursday, December 15th, 2016 to discuss the 2015-16 school year. This meeting is open to community members, families, students, Paladin staff, local area business owners, and other stakeholders. The meeting provides an opportunity for discussion and input on the educational and preparatory practices offered at Paladin Career & Technical H igh School. Want to learn more? VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION SERVICES (VRS)

PA LA DIN PRESS ? OCTOBER 2016

student is successfully working.  Vocational Rehabilitation Services is a voluntary program that isn't related to the school.

A vocational counselor from VR S will be at Paladin on a regular basis to inform students of the services offered by the program. And for those students who apply and are eligible, to follow up with them while in school to get to know them and see what services they may benefit from after completing high school or transition programming.  Services provided are tailored towards the student and their unique strengths and interests in order to assist in getting a job. VR S is looking forward to meeting any interested students that will be graduating this year.

Readiness coursework.

To complete the FAFSA:

- Go to fafsa.gov- M ake your FSA ID- Gather tax documents and/or

use the IR S Retrieval Tool- List the colleges that you will

apply to so they receive your financial aid information

- Complete the online FAFSA.

"HELP" is available on the FAFSA site and a phone number to call with specific questions.  See Sarah and/or Carley for assistance.

Bring in proof of completing the FAFSA for credit. An email or screenshot of the completed FAFSA is plenty.  We do not need to see any numbers or private information.

All students who will be graduating in 2016-2017 can begin this process now.

At Paladin, we strive to provide innovative educational opportunities to every student. One aspect of this is our dedication to offer hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology. N ew to Paladin this year is a 3D printer, capable of producing anything from student-designed jewelry to functional engineered problem-solving products to sculptures and other works of art.

By using 3D design software available on each student's Chromebook, Tinkercad.com, Paladin students can now incorporate stunning new products to their project-based learning process. The skills and thought processes behind 3D design provide far-reaching benefits for tomorrow's workplace, ranging from manufacturing to product design and even cinematic modeling for animated films.

Since the start of the year, many Paladin students have learned the design process and created things like phone docking stations, model cars, artistic sculptures, and even gauge earrings.

If you haven't checked out this amazing new opportunity yet, see Ashley or Adam for details on how to get making!

Paladin staff, friends, and family participated in Hope 4 Youth "Darkest N ight of your Life 4K" on Friday, September 30th.

On any given night, there are 4,000 homeless youth in M innesota and many of them are in the north metro suburbs including all of Anoka County and parts of Hennepin County. When the darkness of night sets in, these youth are staying in shelters, couch-hopping or sleeping on the streets. HOPE 4 Youth is raising awareness of the plight of these young people by bringing the community together for ?The Darkest N ight of Your Life 4K.?

M ore than 700 people experienced some of the same things as these young people ? darkness, loneliness, cold and quiet ? while they ran and walked the 2.5 miles on September 30, 2016. These participants did more than just raise awareness, they also raised approximately $45,000 to provide a new response for housing homeless youth in our community called HOPE Place. HOPE Place, HOPE 4 Youth?s new transitional housing in Coon Rapids, will allow 12 homeless youth, at any one time, a place to call ?home? while they learn the skills they need to become a productive, healthy and housed adult. PALADIN COMMUNITY HAPPENINGS

Are you par t icipat ing in the Paladin H ealth Challenge??

Staff and Students will be promoting the benefits of attending yoga, participating in meditation, and drinking water. Students will be preparing healthy meal once a month and serve samples to students during the lunch hour.

"Cooking M atters" is offered through the U of M N Extension Program. These classes could potentially be offered throughout the entire school year. They involve nutrition education, consumer education, and hands on cooking.

In the month of October, Paladin students will be examining the meaning and value of such virtues as K indness, Purposefulness, Courtesy, and Resourcefulness. By focusing on these character traits, Paladin students will continue to cultivate a positive, supportive school climate where academic success can flourish. It is through a culture of mindful excellence that we hope to equip and empower these leaders of tomorrow.

As an additional incentive to encourage students to do their best, there will be an end-of-year field tr ip to Valleyfair that is exclusive to those students who have earned Court of Honor membership during three or more months of this school year. All students should work toward this goal!

The following students should be particularly proud of themselves, as they have earned Court

of Honor membership - open lunch access for the month of October:

Jason Callahan, Kyesha H arden, Crystal K ilgore, Kenyana M iller, and Samantha Perkins
