Sermon Series for July & August Series on Lord’s Prayer: June and July 2016

Rev. Jody Moore: OBPC

July 3: Luke 11:3, Mathew 6:25-34, and John 6:35, 47-51. “Give us this day our daily bread. . .” Jesus shows us how we can and should ask God to provide what we need. He invites us to pray not only to have my daily needs met, but for each of us to be fed, which calls us to fight for others who are hungry. In John, we also see that Jesus is the bread of heaven and he offers us eternal spiritual food that will never perish. July 17: Matthew 6:9-15 and 18:21-22. “Forgive us our debts

as we forgive our debtors. . .” First of all, we need to acknowledge before God and one another how we have sinned and are in need of God’s grace. Once we have received that grace, we are called to forgive those who have sinned against us. Over and over again throughout the Bible, Jesus calls on us to be merciful, not hold onto grudges, and forgive one another when we are wronged. July 24: Matthew 6:9-13 and James 1:12-16. “And lead us

not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. . .” The Lord’s Prayer acknowledges that temptation is a part of life and that each one of us must battle against evil. We daily need to depend on God to give us strength when temptations come our way. July 31: Revelation 1:4-8 and Luke 11:1-13. “For thine is the

kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.” The Lord’s Prayer ends with a statement of trust, that God is in control of all things and has the power to accomplish the divine plan. After we have offered our hopes to God, we acknowledge our faith in God’s providence and graciousness. What does it mean for us to trust in God’s eternal plans? August 7: Psalm 41. Often in life, we get distracted, lose focus,

and forget that we belong to God. The psalmist encourages us to find our home and encouragement in the Lord. God is our constant source of protection, sustenance, and hope, no matter what we are facing. August 14: Luke 10:25-37. Through the familiar parable of the

Good Samaritan, Jesus teaches us about what it means to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. The parable invites us to consider: Who is our neighbor? What does it mean to love others in our daily lives? August 21: Galatians 3:23-29. Throughout The Bible, God

reveals the fact that we all have dignity because we are created in God’s image and we are loved by our Creator. Societies throughout time tend to divide people into insiders and outsiders, the privileged and the underprivileged. In Galatians, Paul shares the equality that we have as Christians. Paul writes, “There is no longer Jew or Greek, slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” What are the implications for our equality in Christ for the way we treat other people? August 28: Galatians 5:1, 13-25. Paul describes how Christ

has set us free. What does Christian freedom look like? How do we live a Spirit-filled life? Paul lists the fruits of the spirit, which are characteristics that show that the Holy Spirit is active in us. Some of the fruits of the spirit include love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

A Word from our Pastor

sparrow hop through the open door to peck at some crumbs near his table. When the crumbs were gone, the sparrow hopped to the window ledge, spread its wings and took flight. But the flight was very brief. It crashed against the clear windowpane and fell to the floor. The bird quickly recovered and tried again. Crash. And again. Another crash.

Mark got up and attempted to shoo the sparrow out the door, but the closer he got to the bird, the harder it threw itself against the pane. Mark nudged it with his hand. That sent he sparrow fluttering along the ledge, hammering its beak at the glass.

Finally Mark reached out and gently caught the bird, folding his fingers around its wings and body. It weighed almost nothing. He thought of how powerless and vulnerable the sparrow must have felt. At the door he released it, and the sparrow sailed away, free and clear.

There are a lot of misconceptions about freedom. Many of us want to have the freedom to do whatever we want, whenever we want. But that is not true freedom. Many of the decisions that we make are not what will set us free: our sinful choices hold us captive like the sparrow that was captive in that café. The sparrow running into the glass window makes me think about how we, when we stubbornly seek our own agenda can end up banging our heads against the wall. God desires to show us what true freedom is. God wants to free us from sin and all that is holding us back from experiencing God’s joy and grace. Our Lord wants us to soar: will we be open to receiving the remarkable freedom that only God can provide?

Please mark your calendars now for Sunday, September 18

th. We are going to do something a little bit different that

morning. Instead of having the morning service as we typically do in the sanctuary, we are “Going Down by the River to Pray.” This weekend, as we celebrate our anniversary as a church (OBPC was originally established on September 23, 1979), we will have an outdoor worship service at Sound Park in Currituck County north of the Wright Memorial Bridge. Following the worship service, lunch will be served. Sound Park has a two covered pavilions, restrooms, a playground, a gazebo, and several other facilities for us to enjoy. The Fellowship and Worship Committees are planning this event together. I’m looking forward to this opportunity for us to worship and share fellowship together. Look for more details in upcoming newsletters and bulletins.

Peace in Christ,

Jody Moore

Our church is looking forward to hosting Let Freedom Ring, our ninth annual Patriotic Musical, on July 3

rd at 5:00 pm.

Some of you may have heard me tell the following story about freedom before, but I thought it is worth repeating. One day, Mark Reed of Camarillo, CA was eating lunch at a small café. Mark saw a sparrow

Focus on our 2016 Graduates

During worship on Sunday, June 12 we recognized our 2016 graduates. We congratulate them and wish them a successful college beginning! The following students all graduated from First Flight High School this year and we are so incredibly proud of each one of them!

Michael Bennett graduated from First Flight High School in Kill Devil Hills on June 10. Michael plans to continue his education this fall at College of the Albemarle in Manteo. Once he receives his associate’s degree, he plans to continue his education at East Carolina University where he would like to major in Sports Studies. Michael also applied for and was awarded the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church Scholarship. Michael is the grandson of Anita Bennett.

Carla Hardy graduated from First Flight High School in Kill Devil Hills on June 10. Carla is headed to UNC Chapel Hill in the fall. She intends to major in Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy and Management. Carla also applied for and was awarded the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church Scholarship. Carla is the daughter of Charles and Barbara Hardy and the sister of Eva and Mary.

Sara Munson graduated from First Flight High School in Kill Devil Hills on June 10. Sara will be

furthering her education this fall at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC where she

plans to study elementary education. Sara also applied for and was awarded the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church Scholarship. Sara is the daughter of Paul and Anne-Marie Munson and the sister to Megan Munson. Alex Thomas graduated from First Flight High School in Kill Devil Hills on June 10. June 4-5 were special days for the fifteen women who attended our 3

rd annual women’s retreat at the Eastern 4H

Conference Center in Columbia, NC. George Lurie drove the church bus which left the church at seven on Saturday morning. When the group arrived at the conference center they were greeted by several women who had gone the night before in order to prepare the hall. By nine the first session was underway with Carol Trotman leading the group in the Psalms of Praise. We learned that the praise psalms tell us to worship, sing, proclaim and publish the works of the Lord, and to give recognition to God’s role in our daily lives. Brenda Brown discussed the Psalms of Lament. We learned it is alright to complain but we can always trust that God is still near even in our most difficult times. Leah Williamson presented the Wisdom Psalms; we learned God does want us to be happy, to trust Him and to meditate on His Word. The fourth session was led by Judy Dempsey who discussed the Psalms of Ascent. The Jews had been exiled for many years and their return to Jerusalem was marked by acknowledging God’s presence in our lives. We wrote notes of encouragement to each other and made necklaces of multi-colored beads with hanging symbols of God’s love and protection.

During craft time we made bath salts, lotions and soap, all of lavender fragrance. A massage therapist was available for those who wanted a massage. After supper many stayed to play games, others walked or went to bed early. On Sunday, Evelyn Webb and Karen Lurie presented Psalms of Confession and Psalms of Thanksgiving. The bus left at noon and stopped for lunch in Columbia at Good Times Restaurant. The group returned to church by 3pm. Those who attended were blessed by the time to be with each other and God.

VBS Revisited! The week of June 13-17, we had 43 children attend CAVE QUEST VBS. Our youth magically transformed our entire church into a dark cave. Each day, the children attended Sing & Play Rock, Deep Bible Quests, Imagination Station, Kid-Vid Cinema, Spelunker Sports & Games, and of course their favorite Lava Cafe for snack. As the children studied God's word, made crafts, and played games related to the story of the day, they learned five daily Bible points: Jesus Gives Us HOPE, COURAGE, DIRECTION, LOVE, and POWER. All of these daily Bible points reinforced the theme that Jesus is the Light of the World. Throughout the week, the children collected a missions offering for Operation Kid-to-Kid, which this year will be used to build houses for those in need here in North America. Our children raised $375 (well beyond their goal of $200) in missions money this year at VBS. It was truly an exciting week. Our church bus could be seen traveling up and down the beach for pick-ups and drop-offs. The children enjoyed singing the VBS songs and socializing as they rode the bus, almost like an extension of VBS. All week long the children could be seen smiling throughout the day. VBS would not have been possible without the amazing crew of youth and adult volunteers who served tirelessly all week long. Thank you so much to everyone who volunteered to teach VBS and to those who donated supplies to make this a life-changing week for so many children in our community.

Please be in prayer for our youth group and adult sponsors as they travel to Montreat July 30-August 6 for the youth conference, "A World of Difference." Throughout the week, our youth will attend small groups, recreation, and relevant worship and keynote addresses. Our youth will stay in a house together for the week where they become a family, sharing the cooking and housekeeping responsibilities. Several of our elementary & middle school youth and children will be attending the Montreat Clubs Program. This is sure to be a life-changing week for our youth, and we have a very large group attending this year!
