With over 100 guests in attendance, Our Valley’s, celebrated 2 years of hard and continuous work believing in our community and believing that building

bridges translates in better communities.

Our anniversary was a perfect mix of business and celebration where the guests enjoyed live entertainment, food, music, raffles and plenty of interaction with local business owners.

Among those in attendance were esteemed community leaders: Frank Avila, Santa Clarita assistant city manager; Gloria Mercado-Fortine, board member of William S. Hart High School District; Bruce Fortine, board of trustee, College of the Canyons; Isaac Barcelona with Senator Knight’s office; and Anna Frutos-Sanchez, public affairs region manager for Southern California Edison.

Adding to the experience were local food sponsors California Bakery and Café, Tequila 88, Reyes Winery, Taco Bar Catering, Cheers at All Corked Up and Persia Restaurant. SOS Entertainment provided all the lighting and sound, as well as a big screen for Our Valley’s clients to see their brand displayed throughout the night.

Now, we are moving on to celebrate our Mothers and what better way to do it than taking her out to Cheers, Persia Restaurant, Lima Limon or getting her a bread basket (you have to see them!) from California Bakery and Café.

Mothers’ day is celebrated across 46 countries (US,

UK, India, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Mexico, Canada, China, Japan and Belgium amongst others) where people across the globe take this day as an opportunity to honor their mothers and thank them for their efforts in giving them life, raising them and being their constant support.

Early historyMothers’ Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses. The Greeks used the occasion to honor Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology. Ancient Romans celebrated during the spring a festival called Hilaria, dedicated to Cybele, 250 years B.C., a mother goddess. Early Christians celebrated a Mother’s Day during the festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of the Virgin Mary. EnglandBack in 1600, England celebrated a Mothering Sunday on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This celebration died out almost completely by the 19th century until after World War II, when American servicemen brought the custom back in and use it as occasion for sales.

Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910)Julia Ward Howe strongly worked for and promoted to have an official celebration for Mothers’ day in 1872. Julia was an activist, writer and poet. She became famous also for composing the Civil War song, “Battle Hymn of the Republic”. Her Mother’s day idea spread but was later replaced by the Mothers’ Day holiday now celebrated in May.

Anna Jarvis (1864-1948)Anna Jarvis is recognized as the Founder of Mothers’ Day (Mother of Mothers’ Day) in US. She never married and never had kids. Anna got the inspiration of celebrating Mothers Day from her own mother, Mrs Anna Marie Reeves Jarvis. She used to express her desire that someday someone must honor all mothers, living and dead but “It wasn’t to celebrate all mothers. It was to celebrate the best mother you’ve ever known—your mother—as a son or a daughter.”

By 1911, Mother’s Day was celebrated in almost every state in the Union and on May 8, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

de degustación. ¿Por qué? Porque a que la única sala de degustación en Santa Clarita no es lo suficientemente grande para recibir a todos los miembros a la vez con estilo Pulchella.

Tuve la agradable tarea de probar el recientemente lanzado Grenache 09 viñedo-unico y un 09 D’mezcla epaisseru mezcla de 54% Grenache y 46% Syrah, muestras de barricas de 100% Carmenere y un Tannat que podría ser liberado en 2012, y muchos otros de sus vinos actuales en la sala de degustación: 09 Tempranillo, 09 de Viñedos Golden Cloud Zinfandel, 09 Reserva de Familia Privada y 07 Bella Collina Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

Picture this: A stunning private

estate/vineyard home in Newhall, hosting the second annual pick-up/tasting party for Pulchella winery – just blocks from their tasting room. Why? Because Santa Clarita’s only winery tasting room isn’t quite big enough to entertain all of the members at once in Pulchella style.

I had the pleasant task of tasting the newly released 09 single-vineyard Grenache and an 09 D’epaisseru Mélange blend of 54% Grenache and 46% Syrah, barrel samples of 100% Carmenere and a Tannat that both may be released in 2012, and many other favorites of their current wines in the tasting room: 09 Tempranillo, 09 Golden Cloud Vineyard Zinfandel, 09 Private Family Reserve and 07 Bella Collina Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

Paired with the wines this year, as it was a hit last year, were unique passed appetizers prepared by Shannon and Simon Mee of the Egg Plantation: Fresh made meatballs, smoked salmon wraps with blanched asparagus, dill, cream cheese, capers, red onions on lavash bread, French baguette topped with strawberry and pinot noir spread, gruyere cheese and prosciutto, fresh California and black figs stuffed with blue cheese, and bacon wrapped dates stuffed with pecans or cheese.

Guests strolled between gorgeous property and vineyards, marveling at all there was, once again, offered to members. And, of course, I used this time to ask people what they loved about their membership. These are some of the quotes I was able to decipher later from my wine-stained note pad.

For years there has been a debate about how much “risk” should be part of a

retirement saving strategy versus how much “safety” is needed. The answer to this question is a personal one. It cannot be answered on the basis of the risk tolerance of your broker, your financial advisor, or even your children. Most people advising you may have good intentions. However, just because someone seems nice or is a family member does not mean the advice they give is appropriate for you. Over the years, many people have lost a lot of money in their retirement plans. Regarding potential loss you must always take into account your own fears and comfort level. Safety with a reasonable rate of return makes the most sense to most people. The old idea, “with risk also comes reward,” has now been proven false. When people realize they can earn similar returns without similar risk, they also realize something has changed. There are many places where you can enjoy no loss to principal and at the same time achieve an average annual return over time of 3% - 8%. Although risky, the market has averaged returns of about the same, after fees. However, if the difference in returns was even 1% to 2%, you still need to ask the serious question, “Are you willing to RISK the loss of ANy of your retirement

dollars?” When you choose safety over risk, the benefits of having peace of mind and the confidence your money will be there when you retire may be reason enough to be less risky and plan your retirement strategy with safety in mind.Remember this: if the same people always tell you to “buy” when the market is going up, and they don’t tell you to “sell” when the market goes down, you need to wonder if they have your best interest in mind. After all, it is your money. When the market goes down, or even stays the same, your broker may be the only one making money.

It is hard to believe that the 2012-2013 school year is coming to an end in a couple of months

with high school graduations taking place toward the end of May. Our junior high and high schools are currently conducting Open Houses. We encourage parents and community members to attend and learn about our outstanding schools.

The Hart District Governing Board is proud to announce the issuance of $167 million in Series C general obligation bonds, as part of the $300 million Measure SA Bond approved by the local voters in 2008. With the funding in place, the priority one projects will be scheduled for completion. The projects include building a high school in Castaic, construction of auditoriums at both Saugus and Canyon High Schools and Phase Two modernization projects at Hart High School, Sierra Vista Junior High School and Placerita Junior High School.

Ground -Breaking for the long awaited Castaic area high school is scheduled for May 8, 2013. It has been a long and exhaustive journey but I am extremely happy that the Castaic community will soon have a high school.

In January the community was asked to give input on the naming of the new high school through an online survey. The survey closed on February 25, 2013 and now an advisory committee comprised of representatives from the four schools in the Castaic School District, students and parents, as well as representatives from the Castaic Town Council and the Hart School District will review the list of names submitted and present the top 10 names to the Hart District Board. The Board will make a final decision at the April board meeting.

There are many great things happening at our local schools. Please get involved and support our schools.

Spring has sprung in Santa Clarita and with it, several great events and programs for you and your family to enjoy.

The annual Earth Arbor Day Festival being held on Saturday, April 13, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Central Park.

Several themed zones at the Earth Arbor Day Festival will include an Energy, Community,

Eco, Water Conservation, Children’s and Alternative Transportation Zone. Kid-friendly entertainment is

scheduled for the Children’s Zone where kids will be able to experience many fun and hands-on activities. you will also be able to get a tour of the City’s Community Garden, with garden volunteers available for questions and a tour. Check it all out at: www.santa-clarita.com.

Also in April, the City will host the 20th annual Cowboy Festival at Melody Ranch and Motion Picture Studio. The festival at Melody Ranch runs from April 19-21, with partner events happening earlier in the week at venues throughout the area. Everything started as an invitation from Scott Wilk, our Assemblyman representing us in the State Capitol, and our hometownstation, KHTS, to join a group of Santa Clarita business leaders and representatives from diverse

organizations in an extraordinary trip to Sacramento. This trip has been a tradition for the past 8 years thanks to the efforts of the Assemblyman in turn and Carl and Jeri Goldman, owners of KHTS. This year, our hosts Vanessa and Scott Wilk, were welcoming the tour since the very beginning. They had prepared a full and exciting agenda. Our trip kicked off from the SCV Chamber of Commerce building where a bus was waiting for us. Once in the mist of the road, the bus was full of special guests that were sharing time and live interviews on KHTS. Each one of us had the microphone and had to explain why we were there, who we were and if it wasn’t enough, each one had to share at least one secret about us.

When we arrived to Sacramento, it was nice to find out that the meeting place was exactly in the State Capitol Building. There we got the opportunity to listen in the place where the decisions are made and by the decision makers and protagonists in various themes that impact our city and state. Some of the topics that were discussed were Education, High Speed Rail, Budgetary issues, and many more. At the end of the first long day, there was a reception at the Firehouse Restaurant where we had important speakers there too: California State Controller: John Chiang and our new senator: Steve Knight.

Next day was packed with meetings with Assemblywoman Harkey, talking about High Speed Rail; Assemblyman Pan, talking about Health; Assemblyman Blumenfield talking about Budget. We also got to hear representatives from the Metropolitan Water District and the Republican Caucus.

Despite all these meetings and tight agenda, Vanessa Wilk put the cherry on the pie for this trip with a special tour to the historic Stanford Mansion. Having been a guest of this trip in the past, I can tell that the Goldmans and the Wilks took this trip to another level. Congratulations to Scott Wilk for receiving us in such a professional and excellent way. We came back with lots important information, details and a different perspective on how things really are. On our way back home, when the bus stopped in front of the SCV Chamber of Commerce offices, I can say that although this trip has ended, I know that the Journey has just started.

Todo comenzó por una invitación de Scott Wilk, Asambleísta que nos representa en la capital del estado, y KHTS, nuestra estación de radio local, para unirnos a un grupo de líderes empresariales de Santa

Clarita y representantes de diversas organizaciones, en un extraordinario viaje a Sacramento. Este viaje ha sido una tradición durante los últimos 8 años, gracias a los esfuerzos del asambleísta en turno, y Carl y Jeri Goldman, los propietarios de KHTS. Este año, nuestros anfitriones Vanessa y Wilk Scott, nos daban la bienvenida desde el inicio del viaje. Tenían preparada una agenda completa y emocionante. Nuestro recorrido arrancó en el edificio de la Cámara de Comercio de SCV, donde un autobús estaba esperándonos. Al final del día hubo una recepción en el restaurante Firehouse donde también tuvimos oradores destacados: California State Controller: John Chiang y nuestro nuevo senador: Steve Knight.

The month of May for many means Memorial Day when Americans plan time for relaxing with family and friends. It is a time when American veterans are

remembered and honored for their sacrifices in the military, too many times sacrifices resulting in deaths and disabilities. But to Mexican Americans it is also a time to celebrate. It’s a time to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, an unexpected military victory for the Mexican troops who prevailed over French troops in 1862 at the Battle of Puebla. The war between the two enemies was lost by Mexico, but was only a setback for three years until Mexico reclaimed independence.Today, the holiday, frequently mistaken for Mexican Independence Day (September 16), resonates strongly with Mexicans and Mexican Americans as a bicultural event that includes the Anglo-American society. It offers the opportunity to the Non-Latino community, including Americans of all cultures, to embrace and enjoy the Mexican culture and its close neighbors living in both Mexico and the United States. It poses new ways for the Latino community to cement both business and personal relationships with its Non-Latino neighbors, mutually rewarding to both populations.Although the annual holiday, with its military history, has become more of a commercial event due to American involvement, we have the opportunity to celebrate the important bridge that it developed between cultures as we enjoy the food, music and amiable festivities of the Mexican people. This once military-bred celebration has become a positive influence in helping our two cultures develop into a single community as we once again celebrate together on the fifth of May, Cinco de Mayo.

With the news of the real estate market experiencing some growth and property values appreciating, for the

first time since 2007. This is great news for many homeowners that have been waiting nearly seven years to see property values increase. This is especially true for underwater or upside down homeowners. The big question remains, however, is this a temporary result of low inventory, say an “Artificial Appreciation” or is this something more sustainable? Simple supply-and-demand may be attributing to the increase in values or some have said there could be an Inventory vs. government suppressed market. Even some have stated major banks; FANNIE MAE/FREDDIE MAC and HUD have been holding back their REO inventory to hit the market place. Either way there will be challenges and opportunities.

We are experiencing the historically low inventory in the Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding areas of Castaic, Val Verde, Agua Dulce, Acton, Green Valley, Lake Elizabeth/Lake Hughes and other areas. This has been partial blame for the increase in prices as multiple offers are driving final sales prices upward. There are some challenges with this situation. We are seeing a large number of appraisals coming in short due to the “catch up” with the market values. Another challenge for first time buyers is this low inventory places them in direct competition with investor buyers who have all cash or huge down payments.

There are some great opportunities too. First, interest rates are still at historic lows, some lower than 3.5% fixed rates. Second, with the new found (or returning) equity many sellers are now putting their homes on the market so inventory is starting to increase giving home buyers more choices.

It is very competitive in today’s real estate market so now more than ever, it is important to work with a real estate professional with experience, expertise and a proven track record. you need a strong advocate in your corner to help with your transaction as a home seller or home buyer.

As spring approaches there will be opportunities for home sellers and buyers in the Santa Clarita Valley.
