This experience was both a spiritual turning point in Wesley’s life and a birthing point for a people called “Methodists.” What follows is a brief excerpt from Wesley’s journal recording this Aldersgate event: “In the evening, I went very unwillingly to a society in Aldersgate Street, where one was reading Luther’s preface to the Epistle to the Romans. About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ and Christ alone for salvation; and an assurance was given me that he had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death. I began to pray with all my might for those who had in a more especial manner despitefully used me and persecuted me. I then testified openly to all there what I now first felt in my heart. But it was not long before the enemy suggested, ‘This cannot be faith, for where is thy joy?’ Then I was taught that peace and victory over sin are essential to faith in the Captain of our salvation but that, as to the transports of joy---that usually attend the beginning of it especially among those who have mourned deeply---God sometimes giveth, sometimes withholdest them, according to the counsels of his own will. After my return home, I was much buffeted with temptations, but cried out and they fled away. They returned again and again. I as often lifted up my eyes and he ‘sent me help from his holy place.’ (Psalm 20:2) And herein I found in what the difference between this and my former state chiefly consisted. I was striving, yea fighting with all my might under the law, as well as under grace. But then I was sometimes, if not often, conquered; now, I was always conqueror.” Sunday, we will celebrate our great Methodist heritage in the 8:25 a.m. and 10:55 a.m. services. As we do, I will be thinking of the words of historian and former editor of The Christian Century, Martin Marty, “Methodism was the hottest lava flowing in America in the nineteenth century. Beware if it heats up again in the twenty-first century.”

“Just A Closer Walk With Thee” arr. Jack Schrader Daily walkin’ close to Thee, let it be, dear Lord, let it be. I am weak, but Thou art strong. Jesus keep me from all wrong; I’ll be satisfied as long as I walk, let me walk close to Thee. Just a closer walk with Thee. Grant it Jesus, is my plea; daily walkin’ close to Thee, let it be, O dear Lord, let it be. Thru this world of toil and snares, if I falter, Lord, who cares? Who with me my burden shares? None but Thee, O dear Lord, none but Thee. Just a closer walk with Thee. Grant it Jesus, is my plea; daily walkin’ close to Thee, let it be, O dear Lord, let it be.

-Respite Care-“Caring for loved ones and caregivers.”.

Diane Hett, Director of Respite Ministry, 706-256-3117 or [email protected] are over 5 million people living with Alzheimer’s disease in the United States. More than 15.5 million caregivers in the U. S. provide 17.7 billion hours of unpaid care. It is said that there is no more exhausting or rewarding job than caring for a loved one. Over the coming weeks, we will recommend some Additional Tips for Caregivers (continued from last week): • Recognize your feelings of sadness, stress, anxiety, anger, guilt, grief, and frustration; these are normal. • Talk to others about your feelings.• Join a support group to gain insight from others who are experiencing the same things. The St Luke Caregiver Support Group meets this Tuesday, May 27, 12:45 – 2:00 p.m., Conference Room.
