Today’s Gospel passage is the conclusion of Jesus’ discourse with his disciples. It is about the end of time, the coming of the Son of Man, and the final judgment. We hear Jesus tell us that we will be judged on only one thing: the acts of mercy we have shown to the least among us. We also hear Jesus tell us that he identifies with the least ones; thus we serve Him whenever we serve one of the least ones. The Church calls the actions that Jesus described in today’s Gospel the Corporal Works of Mercy. These works are to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to bury the dead, to shelter the homeless, to visit the sick and imprisoned, and to give alms to the poor. In these actions we show God’s compassion and mercy to those in need. How are we doing with living up to Jesus’ expectations? This weekend we end the Church calendar year with the Feast of Christ the King. How wonderful it is to be able to reflect upon the kingship of Christ. Things go better for us when we live with Christ as our King. Our priorities fall into place. We find it natural to reach out and help those who are in need. As we hear in this weekend’s Gospel, that’s how each of us will be judged. With Christ as our King, we have the time to live as good shepherds, to spend time with our families, children and grandchildren. We have the patience we need when our family members need it the most. May we end this Church year by acknowledging that Christ is our King. As you gather as a family or with friends, recall the list of the Corporal Works of Mercy. Talk about some concrete examples of how you and your family and friends might do these actions in our community and then discuss why it is important that we do these things. Together we can move forward with hope and joy into a brand new year with all the faith and strength we will need to succeed. Have a good week! Peace, Fr. Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part

of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions

brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds.

Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time

for infant Baptism, weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or

Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals.

We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and

Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member.

So, are you a registered parishioner?

If not, please consider registering. Registration forms are available in

the Parish Ministry Center or online at www.st-justin.org

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Coming to the end of the Church year, we can wonder how we got “extreme unction” out of “anointing of the sick.” “Extreme” comes from a Latin phrase, in extremis, which in English refers to the last struggle of a dying person. “Last rites” is a phrase in common usage, and refers to the fact that years ago everyone waited until the last crisis of illness to summon the priest. The goal of anointing had always been healing and forgiveness, but in time it began to be seen as a preparation for death. In a hard world, almost anything from a hangnail to a sneeze could be life‑threatening, so perhaps the change was inevitable. The emphasis on the penitential aspects was heightened, even to the odd practice of Rome in the twelfth century, when the sick person was sprinkled with ashes mixed with holy water and given a hair shirt as a sign of penance. The reformers thankfully overlooked some of these oddities of history, and today the sacrament of the sick is much more generously applied to persons in a wide range of situations. Still, it is a sacrament of reconciliation, and for that reason is not celebrated for an infant or toddler, although there is a rite for a visit to a sick child not including anointing or Communion. —Rev.
