— MESSAGE FROM FATHER TIM — Some time ago, I came across a handout that provided some statistics that was complied by Dr. Phillip Harter of the Stanford University School of Medicine. It is an analysis of the world’s population. Dr. Harter said that if the population of the world shrunk to a village of 100 people, the makeup would be as follows: 57 Asians, 21 Europeans, 14 from the Western Hemisphere and 8 Africans. 52 females, 48 males, 70 nonwhites, and 30 whites, 70 non-Christians and 30 Christians. Six people, all from the United States, would own 59% of the world’s wealth. 80 would live in substandard housing, 70 would be illiterate, 50 would suffer from malnutrition, 1 would be pregnant, 1 would have a college education, 1 would be near death and 1 would own a computer. Based on these statistics, an anonymous writer offered the following observations:

• If you live in a good home, have plenty to eat and can read, you’re a member of a very select group. • If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more fortunate than the millions who will not survive the week. • If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation, you are ahead of 500 millions people in the world. • If you can attend a church gathering without fear of harassment, arrest, torture or death, you are fortunate, more than three billion people in the world can’t. • If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75% of the people in this world. • If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish some place, you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy. • If you can read this message, you are more blessed than two billion people in the world who cannot read at all.

I have rewritten the introduction a little, but the content in this column comes right out of a publication called “Stewardship News and Notes.” I hope that it helps us to open our eyes and our hearts. I hope that it makes us what we really need to be as we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King and prepare – next week to begin the season of Advent– truly grateful for all that we have been given. If I would add anything to all of this it is that we need to be profoundly grateful to live in the United States. The freedom that we have here is an awesome thing, may we never take it for granted. And we must, as well, be grateful to our good and gracious God who has blessed us with all that we have – including life itself.

Thank you for your generous support last week to the collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development! As a parish we raised $2,298.00 to support those on the margins living in poverty.
