In Our CommunityA community is made up of many neighborhoods. We live in the city of Sparks, Nevada. A city is a big
community. Many people live in a kind of community called a suburb.
A suburb is an area located near a city. Our friend, Mike, lives in the suburb, Spanish Springs. His neighborhood is quieter than ours.
Other people live in rural areas. A rural area has small communities called towns that are far apart. There is open spaces used for growing plants for food and raising animals. Fallon and Fernley are rural areas near Sparks.
We live in the city. We don’t live in a rural area or suburb.
Our NeighborhoodOur home and school are in our
neighborhood. A neighborhood is a place where people live, work, play and help each other.
Our neighborhood is a very busy place. We have schools, grocery stores, restaurants, banks, a hospital, a fire station, a police station, churches, library, and parks and recreation nearby.
Our School We go to Alice Maxwell Elementary. Our school is
on Rock Boulevard in Sparks, NV.Our school is a small community. Our Principal is Mrs. Dufrene. She is the leader of
our school. Our teacher is the leader of our class.School is where we learn and play with our friends. We must also follow the rules of our school. We have lots of learning activities at our school.

Community Laws A law is a rule people must follow. Laws help keep us
safe. They also help keep communities clean. Look at these signs. They show different laws. Which
laws keep people safe? Which laws keep the community clean?
We also follow rules in school. Our principal, the leader of our school, makes some of these rules. These rules help us work and play together.
We help our teacher make some of the classroom rules.
