DREAM COME TRUE:

High Schooler Makes It On ESPN!

by Matt Holmes

Mitchell Marcus is a team manager for Coronado High's basketball team in El Paso, Texas. He has a developmental disability, but his team's coach recently gave him the opportunity to suit up and enter a game as thanks for all his hard work and inspiration. As the crowd chanted his name, Marcus's teammates tried to set him up for an easy basket. He missed a lot of shots, though, and started to get discouraged. All hope for a basket appeared lost, until rival player Jonathan Montanez inbounded the ball near Coronado High's net. Montanez yelled Marcus's name to get his attention, then gave him a soft bounce pass. Mitchell caught the ball, dribbled, turned around and sank a layup as the crowd went wild. Fans later stormed the court and lifted Marcus onto their shoulders. Jonathan Montanez showed great sportsmanship. We can all learn something from this inspirational story. It’s not always the most talented or skilled player, but sometimes the one with the most heart that is the most valuable.

BOOK REVIEW

      Prodigyby  Marie  Lu

by Maxine Harkins

The book Prodigy is the second book in the trilogy of Legend by Marie Lu. It is a continuation of Day and June’s adventure toward finding Day’s younger brother Eden. It starts out about 9 days after where the first book left off. June and Day have had a lot of loyalty issues. June is still unsure if she still wished to be the Republic’s golden girl. Day is still having to convince himself he can trust June. Within the first chapter, the Elector passes away and his younger son, Anden takes over for him. Day and June seek out the Patriot’s help with finding Day’s brother. The Patriots make a deal with them. They agreed to help track down and rescue Day’s brother if June and him help them assassinate the new Elector. At first June is unsure about this, assassinating the boy who runs the country she was loyal to and proud of just a while ago. Razor, the Patriot leader, creates a whole plan on how they’re going to pull off such a crazy assassination. He plans on using June and Day to their advantage. The Patriots send June back to the Republic. They believe that they will take her back because she isn’t a complete rebel. The only one who knows she still isn’t so sure is herself. June and Day go through conflicts with each other, others, and they have problems within their selves. They make several incredible sacrifices, some of them being sacrifices they regret. Many parts of this book make you angry because you know some of what the characters don’t know. Overall, Marie Lu wrote this book incredibly even if the plot and the ending make you want to read more. It will make you anxious for the third book, which is probably coming out sometime in the beginning of 2014. I suggest you read the first book to the trilogy, Legend, before you read the second. It’s a book you can’t get out of your head.

LIP SYNC 2013 ROCKS! Continued...

by Evan Holmes & Angela Onley

The final performance in Act I included eighth graders Kelsey Meyer, Amanda Attiya, Juana Parral, Kim Brown and Elizabeth May also performing a various artist pop medley. Next, the intermission took place to allow people to get up to walk around, get snacks, and use the restroom. Also, during this time video performances by the Elementary and Primary school staff were played. Then, the MC’s, Jon Salkeld and Dean Kolonich, asked if everyone could find a seat so that Act II could begin. Kicking off the second act was Reese Bloomstead, Alexis Chopek, and Sara Anton performing the “Bellas Finale Performance” from the movie Pitch Perfect. Just like the first act, many other students performed that made the crowd go wild. The final student performance was a group of four eighth graders - Sadie Ford, Alyssa Altieri, Alexis Paone, and Nicholl Fenton performing a various artist pop medley featuring the song “Thrift Shop.”

But, the show wasn’t over just yet! Next up were the teachers performances! First up, the lovely ladies of UTMS! When the curtains opened, the ladies impersonated the men by dancing to “Apache.” Then, lead by Mrs. D and Ms. Drake, the ladies danced to “Single Ladies” by Beyonce. The gym erupted with cheers and claps. Next up were the male teachers performing various pop songs that made everyone scream and shout! Mr. Hoffman and Mr. Sam performed a Gotye song while Mr. Merkh took to the stage wearing a wig and dress! The men also performed to “YMCA”, Mr. Cook rapped “Jump Around,” and the entire group finished with a One Direction hit! But, the show STILL wasn’t over quite just yet! For the finale, the Harlem Shake was performed by Andrew Pensa, Josh Brook, the UTMS ladies, and the UTMS men! Most of the audience even joined in and started dancing on the bleachers! But sadly, after that the S.O.A.R. Lip Sync officially ended. Everyone will always remember it as a fun night where they got to hang out with friends, watch their peers and teachers perform, and have a few laughs!

CIAN’S CORNER

by Cian O’Donoguhe

Irish Culture Many people may wonder why Irish people came to America. There are many different sides of the story. Many came because of the Irish Potato Famine, which caused half of the population of Ireland to flee to avoid starvation. The great potato famine was caused by a blight in the potato which turned it black and rotten while still in the ground. The Potato storage areas were seized by the English armies to feed their soldiers, leaving the men, women, and children of Ireland to starve. Ireland was made of two parts, North and South. The South was subject to English rule, while the North of Ireland rejected it. They would not submit to English rule. Out of rebellion the North Irish Rebels blew up many things. Some of these things including houses, cars, and more. They believed that this was the right thing to do to keep Ireland as a free country.

St. Patrick’s Day Saint Patrick’s Day is a widely known holiday. Today, we celebrate it by eating corned-beef and cabbage, watching parades, and dressing up like leprechauns. However, the history of St. Patrick’s Day involves much more. Saint Patrick’s Day started in Ireland. Saint Patrick was sent to Ireland as a slave at age sixteen. He escaped, but soon returned to spread Christianity around Ireland. Today people celebrate him by eating various foods and having parades. This is all in honor of Saint Patrick. There are also, many different stories, such as he was born in Scotland, and as a slave in Ireland had run away because of a dream he had received from God. He returned because he allegedly had another dream, that the people of Ireland requested him to return and walk among them once more.

Are You Irish?

!"#$%&

'()&!"#$%&

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, we polled the students to see just how many of us come from Irish heritage! Of the 95 students who responded to the poll, 63 responded Yes and 32 responded No. You can see the results in the pie chart to the right. Even if you are just a “wee” bit Irish or none at all, everyone can have fun celebrating St. Patrick’s Day!
