Support the Orange Tree TheatreThe Orange Tree Theatre is an award-winning producer of outstanding work that you won’t see anywhere else in London. From rediscovered plays, to new writing, to introducing primary school children to Shakespeare for the first time, all aspects of the Orange Tree’s work are created with quality, variety and intimacy at their heart.

However, in order to create the ambitious, challenging and entertaining work that the Theatre is renowned for, we need to raise £300,000 every year in addition to ticket sales.

We need your help to enable us to achieve this.

AS AN INDIVIDUALYou can play your part by joining as a Member from as little as £30 a year, or by becoming a Patron and building a personal relationship with the Theatre. In return you can access a host of exclusive benefits including ticket discounts and special events. See our website, phone the Box Office, or pick up a leaflet at the Theatre for more information or to join.

THROUGH A TRUST OR FOUNDATIONThe Orange Tree regularly works with trusts and foundations to create its work on stage and in the community. If you are associated with a trust or foundation and would like to know more about this work and how you can help, please contact Development Director Alex Jones.

THROUGH A COMPANYAlign your company with an award-winning theatre by becoming a Corporate Member, and you could promote your business to the 50,000 audience members that attend the Orange Tree every year. We offer Members a range of benefits tailored to suit your company’s needs, providing unique opportunities to entertain employees or clients, develop new business and fulfil CSR objectives. To discuss how we could support your objectives, contact Alex Jones.

The Rolling Stone is a powerful family story set in Uganda by fêted new writer Chris Urch. Winner of the Bruntwood Prize, it will be staged by rising star Ellen McDougall. Featuring the battle between fiercely held religious belief and the need for people to live their own lives, it promises to be a great event. This is a co-production with the Royal Exchange Theatre, following our successful collaboration on Pomona’s transfer to Manchester. First produced in 1977, German Skerries is a rare revival of an early play by influential writer Robert Holman. Beautiful and profound, Robert’s is a unique theatrical voice. A co-production with celebrated Up in Arms company, it is directed by Alice Hamilton (Eventide and Visitors at the Arcola). In February and March we have daytime and some evening performances of Romeo and Juliet, our stripped back, urgent new version aimed at GCSE students of Shakespeare’s timeless play. The Brink is a funny and disturbing voyage into the mind of a young school teacher. Brad Birch’s adventurous and thrilling new play will be directed by the winner of this year’s J.P.Morgan Award for an outstanding emerging director, Mel Hillyard, and produced in collaboration with the NT Studio and W14 Productions. A very special part of the OT’s year is our Primary Shakespeare project. This year

Education Director Imogen Bond stages an inventive The Comedy of Errors for primary school audiences.

The season will round off with Bernard Shaw’s early comedic masterpiece The Philanderer. This very funny take on relationships, marriage, feminism and divorce promises to be a must-see after last year’s sell-out production of Widowers’ Houses. Alongside these six exciting productions, we have one-off shows, concerts and eight performances as part of the National Theatre Connections scheme in its 21st anniversary year, when for the first time we are a partner theatre. Two bold new plays, two rarely revived early plays by significant writers and two vibrant Shakespeares for young audiences: a classic OT mix. It’s pushing us forward too: four of the six shows will be directed by emerging directors new to the OT. We are very proud to be going strong after the withdrawal of our Arts Council funding, but we know we can only produce such a bold programme of work through the vital support we receive from all our other funders and of course you, our audience. Please keep supporting us in every way you can. We look forward to seeing you here!

Paul Miller Sarah NicholsonArtistic Director Executive Director

IntroductionThe second half of our 2015/16 season continues to push forward the distinctive Orange Tree mix of exciting new plays by emerging writers and rare revivals. This is the first year where we are operating without regular Arts Council funding and we are delighted to present such a dynamic and forward-looking programme.

The Rolling StoneDembe and Sam have been seeing each other for a while. They should be wondering where this is going and when to introduce each other to their families. But they’re gay and this is Uganda. The consequences of their relationship being discovered will be explosive. Especially for Dembe, whose brother goes into the pulpit each week to denounce the evils of one man loving another.

The Rolling Stone was the winner of a Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting in 2013 and first premiered at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, in April 2015 to critical acclaim. Chris Urch’s plays include Land of Our Fathers (Theatre 503/Trafalgar Studios).

Ellen McDougall’s directing work includes The Glass Menagerie (Headlong), Anna Karenina (Royal Exchange Theatre), Idomeneus (Gate), Henry the Fifth (Unicorn) and Glitterland (Secret Theatre, Lyric Hammersmith). Her production of Ivan and the Dogs was nominated for an Olivier Award.

German Skerries‘My favourite living writer.’ Simon Stephens

A friendship, a marriage, a holiday, a death – German Skerries fills the stage with the meetings and departures that make us human.

It’s 1977, and Martin, Jack, Michael and Carol are staring out into the future. Around a popular birdwatching spot overlooking the mouth of the Tees, their lives intertwine to create an uplifting portrait of human hope and vulnerability.

The first major revival of this richly resonant drama which won renowned playwright Robert Holman the George Devine Award. His incredible career spans four decades including the plays Making Noise Quietly, Across Oka and the recent A Breakfast of Eels.

Produced with the award-winning Up In Arms, a touring theatre company led by director Alice Hamilton and writer Barney Norris. Their productions of Norris’ plays Visitors and Eventide received critical acclaim at the Arcola, Bush Theatre and on tour, picking up nine Off West End Award nominations between them.

“Alice Hamilton’s excellent production is like a minor-key Jerusalem.” Michael Billington, The Guardian, on Eventide at the Arcola

Following its run at the Orange Tree, German Skerries tours to Reading Rep, Stephen Joseph Theatre Scarborough, Dukes Theatre Lancaster and Hull Truck.

Advanced people form charming friendships: conventional people marry.

A man in love with two women. But what do the women really want from him? A disgraced doctor falls in love with one of them – and then with the other. In the ensuing power struggle, the new feminism is up against the old machismo. In the end, will it be the law that has the last word on their chance of happiness?

Frankness and kindness: one is as bad as the other. Especially frankness. I’ve tried both. Shaw at his wittiest. Marital arrangements, divorce laws and medical ethics all feature in this brilliantly funny story of four young people’s clumsy attempts at making their lives make sense. Following the success of Paul Miller’s production of Shaw’s first play Widowers’ Houses, we present another of his early comedies, not seen in London in a generation.

★★★★ “Paul Miller directs a witty, spirited and timely revival” Paul Taylor, The Independent  on Widowers’ Houses

Take Part The Orange Tree Theatre works with around 20,000 people from our local community each year. Our work spans every generation; from workshops in primary schools to performances in residential homes.

Younger people are inspired by our Youth Theatre, are engaged in creative learning linked to the school curriculum, and take part in enriching arts activities both in their schools and here at the Theatre. Much of our work focuses on introducing Shakespeare’s plays to younger audiences in a lively and engaging way, often giving young people their first taste of live theatre.

This spring: Romeo and Juliet for secondary school students, The Comedy of Errors

for primary school children, our Young Company present their own show, plus National Theatre Connections comes to the OT as we are a partner theatre for the first time including our performances of James Graham’s Bassett. Our Education team is always happy to hear from parents or teachers who would like to find out more about what we offer.

You can pick up a brochure of our work from the Theatre or visit our website for more information: orangetreetheatre.co.uk/education

There’s violence out on the streets. Passions collide. And the world changes in an instant.

Shakespeare’s darkest love story is given a contemporary edge in our intimate in-the-round staging.

Playing in under 90 minutes, six actors bring Shakespeare’s language to sparkling life in a fast-paced and explosive production.

Bold directorial and design choices make it ideal for drama students who need to review live performances, as well as students studying the text in detail.

Orange Tree Theatre Connections Company

BASSETT by James Graham

At Wootton Bassett School the supply teacher has done a runner and locked the pupils in their classroom. Dean needs the toilet, Aimee needs a coffee, Amid needs to pray, and Leo – well, Leo really, really wants to escape. Outside, only yards from their confinement, a repatriation of fallen British soldiers is happening along the high street, as it has over a hundred times before through this quiet Wiltshire town. But this one is more personal than most. As factions form and secrets are revealed, maybe Leo is not the only one who’ll want to get away. An exhilarating, startling snapshot of a generation who have inherited a world at war.

James Graham wrote This House (National Theatre), Privacy and The Vote (Donmar) and Coalition on Channel 4.
