On :March 19, the Grosse Pointe Review will markita 23rd anniversary. Thoul'h it will be a aignificantday, there won't be any special festivities, ceremoniesor any fanfare. In tact the only note about it will bethis article you are now reading.

This un-recognition in itself is the IfUteat com-pliment that could be extended to L. B. Oldham, founder and publisher, and the entire staff. It meansthat the people of Grosse Pointe have come to regardthis newspaper in the same manner they reserve forthe dependable mailman, the vigil police and 1iremen;and the family doctor.

The Review did not earn this coveted status 0ver-night but only through years of BerVice, like the afore-said public servants.

Rich with this tradition and prestige earned in.the past as we guided the progress of this community, the Review looks to the future with a promiae toherald the way to even a better Groue Pointe.

WE NEED OPERATORSt GOODWILLThe threat of a W'alkout by the the operators of -

oar police radio syatem, jeopardizing the aafety of ourcommunity, might have been averted if aome coDDier&-tion had been given these mm by the ipOD8Ol'I of theproposed system, which term1natel their employmenthere as soon &8 it goes into operatioD, preI1DD&b1y June15.

Loeing their jobe in iUe1f ia a bItte!- pm to swaDow,bat more potent ia the ineonslderate DWIJIer = whichthey were pushed out into the rub of the UDemp10yeclafter &erring the commUDity faithtaDy aDd competelltl1far a number of yearL

To say that they wenl bighJy pe1d far tbeir e:ffortawould be far from correet beeaue duriDr the poIt-war,e&nI of the high dollars they reeeiftd -.Jari. thatwould not attract the average factorr worker.

Just U &II eumple let'. cite the cue of the eb1efcperator. .After 18 years of IIel'\'ic:e with DO peDlioD orother security, he is told in a roand-about way that hiIIfIl'Vice is no longer requ.ired. He's out. It's not difficultto know just how he fee1l within.

It is not our pu1'pOIe to salvage the jobll of the radiooperators. There is no need for them in the proposedlel"vice which according to its exponents is an im.provement over the present system.

However, it ia our contention that lIOtDediplomaeymight have been used to keep the JUsbly important"goodwill" of these men. Some ineentive Should havebeen presented to encourage them to remain 0t1 dutyuntil the system was successfully established.

Busy with studies and reports on AM and FM, en.giDeering data, equipment problema and politics, theofflciall forgot to eoDBider their fellow man.

Perhaps it's not too late.

Another point brought out by Hartz is that thenew system would be on the same frequency to be usedby Michigan State Police, which would enable GrossePointe to be in contact with the entire state if andwhen necessary.

He stated that the cost of mstallation of the newsystem would be about $23,000 and the cost of mam~tenance would be $B,OOOa year. It will require olleoutside employee, a technician, for maintenance.

Though the license will be granted directly to theFarms, in accordance with an FCC ruling that only onemunicipality can be named on a license, that all themunicipality using the service WIll sP"'" the cost oferection and operation.

Be8ides the aforementIoned, others who attendedthe meeting were Park, Homer E. Fritsch, president,Plerre Heftlel', Vlllage attorney; City of Grosse Pointe,Tom Trombly, Police ChIef; Farms, James K. Watkms, retiring president, William F. Connolly, new presidentand Harry A. Furton; clerk; Shores, Jack Williams, commissioner, Thomas Jefferis, supermtendent; andWarren Carsen, WRDR operator.

"No" answered Connolly," "our only purpose wasto find a better system and I sincerely believe the pro-posed plan is an improvement over WRDR."

Hartz stated that the most important advantageof the proposed system is that each police station wouldreceive and dispatch its own calls and be in direct con-tact with their own scout car and other departments.

These duties would be handIed by the regular polleeofficer on duty at the desk.

After a few moments of silence which saw glan;: .......leap frog back and forth across the room, William F.Connolly, newly elected Farms president, arose and re-marked that he was chairman of a committee thatlaunched an investigation last year.

"Why", Johnston quened," "Did you have anygrievances with our present system?"

be centrally located to be able to aerve aU the Pointesmore efficiently.

Hartz, who lives in Detroit, made this point in an.awer to Mr. De Baeke's question, "if you must havethis new system why don't you use our present WRDRbuilding at 1006 Vernier?"

Following a lengthy discussion between neBaekeaDd Bartz during which the latter accused the former ofputting warda in his mouth, Judge Dabaeke's motionthat the WRDR be offered to the municipalities was116animousIy accepted by board members, SupervisorCarl Sehewikart, Judge John L. Potter, Clerk DonGoodow, and Treasurer Adolph Damman.

I..-.e uid that he doubted if the radio comnutteewould consider the offer.

Judge Debaeke's proposal Wll8 also strongly sup-ported by officials of Grosse Pointe Woods, A A.Gbe8quire, president, Paul W. Rowe, and Rex John-atoD, eommissioners, They appealed to the radIO com-mittee to consider this offer.

The Woods, only community sati.:,,£led with thePl'88el1t Township service, must either join the others

_ or .eBtabliah ita own system RUch as the City of GrossePomte has now and is willing to abandon for the pro-pcl8ed llYBtan.

Pre8ideat Ghe8qulre pleaded to the radio committeeto ucept the Township's offer.

"We then would be glad to cooperate with you to.lee how we can incorporate and improve our present.system into a better service. Don't leave us out."

Harry A. Furtan, Farma clerk, usured Ghesquirethat his village was invited to join them at any time.

. Ac~tions of playing politics and using the vitalpolice radio system as a means to dissolve the Town.ship were hurled by Mr. Johnston. He asked the per-IOn who started the move to replace the system to standup and identify himself and explain the reason for hisaction.
