Opinions A student shares her opinion on gun violence following the recent mass shooting in Pittsburg. Prayers For Victims By Alexandra Horemis Staff Writer Have something to say? All within the past month, a college student, two African American men, and a Synagouge full of Jewish Americans, have all been targeted and harmed. Last week, a white man entered a grocery store in Kentucky and shot two innoncent African American people. This was reportedly after a failed attempt to enter a predomiantly black church just minutes before the fatal shooting according to police. Now, on this past Saturday, a white man entered a Synagogue and killed eleven people. He entered spouting anti-semtic staements and hatred for all Jews during this 20-minute attack. Before comminting this henious act, the suspect posted on social media that he “can’t stand by and watch his people get slaughtered”. Your people? What about my people? As a Jewish American, this man has hurt my people. For a while now, Jews have been blamed for immigration, and many other things the alt-right doesn’t support. During the Charlottesville incident, people of the alt-right were chanting “Jews will not replace us”. We are not trying to “replace” anyone. Now with this recent shooting, it’s being called the deadliest attack on Jews in American history. It’s crushing that these horrible attacks are happening and that my people are the target of them. In America, people are supposed to be free from religious prosecution. Why do Jews not have that right? I’m tired of seeing mass shootings in the news. I don’t care who is the target, it’s never ok. Now, no one is safe, no matter the color of their skin, or the religion they practice. You’re only safe if you are a white, Christian man in this country. This Saturday, another tragic mass shooting occurred in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 46 year old Robert Bowers charged into the Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue and opened fire, killing 11 people and injuring 6 other church goers.

The perpetrator was armed with an AR-15 and three handguns while carrying out the 20 minute attack.

Reminiscing Red Dragons: Revel In 150 YearsBy Kortnee GilmoreArchival Editor for Sesquicentennial

This page is a part of the Sesquicentennial efforts to continue to spread and share the history of Cortland as a college. What first started as the Cortland Normal School in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, has evolved to what is now the State University of New York at Cortland. Over the last 150 years Cortland has experienced growth, change, and prosperity, and this page will act as a reflection of those through old photos, newspaper clippings, and even old advertisements.

S ky ’s The Limit

When, I see an email I typically scroll right on past. As busy as our mailboxes become, it can be very easy to miss out on imperative opportunities our campus provides us with.

That being said, this past week, an email titled “Skydiving” had caught my attention. I’ve always wanted to go, I just never had the registration and opportunity so accessible. $256 later and a little courage, I signed up to soar the sky next Sunday November 3rd.

Are any of you actively involved in the outdoor programs here at SUNY Cortland? The outdoor pursuits program is a great way to get outside, get away from the campus and get involved.

Recently partnered with the Inclusive Recreation Resource Center, Outdoor Pursuits is hoping to offer more inclusive opportunities for all.

If you haven’t heard of this

great program before, I highly recommend you visit the Cortland Webpage and click on the Student Life Center tab, direct yourself to Outdoor Pursuits and check on the upcoming trips and opportunities.

Upcoming trips in November include; paddling on the Erie Canal, a trip to Niagara Falls, biking on the Erie Canal, a day hike to Taughannock Falls, a hot air balloon ride in Ithaca and so many more.

Price and registration vary, so sign up before you miss out on these exclusive opportunities.

There are 3 more spots available for Skydiving next Sunday. If you have the money, take the time try something new, meet some new people and have the experience of a lifetime.

A student highlights the wonder ful asp ec ts and opp or tunit ies the O utdo or Pursuits pro gram at Cor tland has to offer.

It seems as if every other week we hear on the news about a gunman firing down on innocent people for no good reason. The Las Vegas shooting for example that happened in October of 2017, was one of the worst shootings in U.S. history, killing 59 people. Unfortunately, no matter where you go it seems as if it’s possible for someone to open fire at any point in time because of the lenient gun’s laws that exist in America and the access people have on getting ahold of these firearms. Just this Saturday on October 27, around 9:30 am, a gunman by the name of Robert Bowers, entered a synagogue in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania opening fire on a group of worshipers who were peacefully practicing their faith. Bowers stormed into the Tree of Life Congregation

Synagogue shouting his hatred for Jews while opening fire in a 20-minute attack before police enforcements arrived on the scene. In those 20 minutes, 11 lives were taken, 2 injured and 4 other officers injured as well. Bowers was charged with 29 federal counts, including hate crimes such as anti-Semitic rants on his social media accounts. Following his attack, Bowers made a brief appearance in court the next day, where U.S. attorney Scott Brady demanded the death penalty. Waiting on approval from the Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, President Trump also gave his input, signaling his support on Bowers receiving the death penalty. In my opinion, we need to make a change now. Americans are constantly fighting for gun laws in the U.S. but never seem to get what we demand. I can’t stand hearing about shootings constantly on the news that are going on in this country and I don’t know what more has to happen before a change is made. I can’t imagine someone having such hatred towards a certain faith to the point where they feel the need to open fire on innocent people who are just practicing their faith. Robert Bowers is a coward and he is the perfect

example of why people should not be able to access guns as easily as he did. He is clearly a racist and if he was posting all these hateful comments on social media prior to his shooting, it should’ve been investigated immediately. I stand with those in fight for stricter gun laws because I don’t want to see this happen to innocent civilians again. The death penalty will eliminate one cause to the problem but what about all the other anti-Semitic’s out there who are now getting ideas and who can still gain access to firearms. It is a scary world we live in and my condolences are with those affected by this cold-blooded attack.
