"We're not reading and writing across and down the page anymore. We're reading and writing in three dimensions: across, down, and out, the 'out' being hyperlinks. It's a whole different kind of literacy; it's a whole different kind of writing; it's a whole different kind of reading. It's a type of literacy that can't be done anywhere else but on the web."

As a combination of a social network and a blog host, Xanga offers the best of both worlds by letting bloggers maintain a list of friends and join blog rings.” -About.com

Pros:Social networking can be very positive to the classroom experience. Students could stay connected through messaging, blogging, and many other forms of communication. Skype can be very good for the classroom, because it is free to use. Classrooms can connect to others around the country and or world.

Teachers in the school that I work at all have their own blogs. They make these blogs available not only to students but to parents as well. These teachers post not only homework assignments, but also what is going on in their classrooms each week.

Cons: Social networking sites can interfere with school work and encourage students to worry about socializing more than their studies.

Social networking also puts someone’s information out their on the web, and some parents do not want their children’s information on the web. We must be very responsible when using these sites in and out of the classroom.

*In my classroom, I would love to use blogger and skype. I will most likely shy away from the other sites. I use facebook at home, will not use it to communicate with students.
