Our Club Vision & Mission 2016 – 2018 Vision: A core of empowered, God-loving, people oriented women-professionals and business executives with a heart for service and commitment, to improve the lives of other women and girls. Mission: To build a vigorous and empowered women and girl population who are aware of their basic human rights and fundamental freedom. Practice these in the improvement of their lives. Our Club History Zonta Club of Ilocos Norte was sponsored by the Zonta Club of Baguio in September 1978 and chartered on May 1, 1979. There were 15 charter members and Maria A. Ranada was the first President. There are at present 54 members of the Zonta Club of Ilocos Norte continuing the work to advance the status of women through service and advocacy. Service Projects:

1) Past Service Projects Conducted Service Projects: These have addressed the health of women, economic, self-sufficiency,

prevention/avoidance of violence, education and livelihood.

• Medical and surgical missions in coordination with the Makati Medical Center - Department

of Surgery, the Philippine-American Medical Society of Western Pennsylvania, USA and the

Philippine-American Medical Association of Michigan, USA.

• Continuous support to San Lorenzo Medical-Dental Charity Clinic, Laoag City for indigents.

• Free PAP smear and breast cancer screening to indigent women of Laoag City and Ilocos

Norte.

• ZONTA CARES (in support of the National Literacy Program of the government in 1986-

1988) - training the youth for livelihood projects, providing scholarships (until the present)

and activities for promotion of good health (sports);

• Livelihood projects (cosmetology and dressmaking; candle-making, dishwashing soap-

making, smoked fish-making, silkscreen painting for women parolees and jailed convicts);

massage training for persons with disability;

• Adoption of the Pediatric Ward at the Gov. Roque Ablan Sr. memorial Hospital from 1994-

2012.

• Adoption of the charity OB-GYNE ward of GRASMH. The ward was repainted/refurbished on

Zonta day 2013 and club still maintains it.

• Annual Christmas gift-giving to less fortunate families in various towns; visitations at the

Provincial Jail; support to the calamity program of Ilocos Norte;

• The club is sponsoring "operation liwanag" wherein we give eyeglasses to those with

impaired vision.

• Service on Early Detection Breast Cancer in cooperation of the local government of Dingras,

Ilocos Norte, the Philippine Breast Cancer Foundation and the Philippine College of

Surgeons.

• Maintenance of the Ob-Gyne Charity Ward at the Gov. Roque B. Ablan Sr. Memorial Hospital

(GRBASMH). Periodically, we go and inspect the place to see if things are in proper order.

• Free medical and dental assistance for indigents at San Lorenzo Charity Clinic Laoag City (founded

by the late Ztn. Purisima Labio, M.D.).

• Supports the City Celebration Disability Prevention Week.

• Sponsoring physical fitness program

• Recruitment of four (4) new members and installations of new set of officers for the biennium

2014-2016.

• Free PAP smear/breast cancer detection to indigent women of Laoag City and Ilocos Norte as

determined by the City and provincial Social Welfare Offices.

• Christmas Gift Giving to less fortunate families at Brgy. Victoria, Currimao, Ilocos Norte.

• Support to the calamity program of Ilocos Norte and other provinces of the Philippines.

• The club is sponsoring "operation liwanag" wherein we give eyeglasses to those with impaired

vision.

2) Current Services Projects • Women’s Month 2017 Activities:

1) On March 8, Women’s Day and Yellow Rose Day, the radio program “Usapang Babae at Iba Pa” was officially launched. Zonta members gave live interviews and topics ranged from the significance of Women’s Day, Zonta Yellow Rose Day, to the mission, vision, advocacy and services of Zonta Club Ilocos Norte and Zonta International;

Spearheaded by ZCIN through Ztn. Cely Paz, KBP Ilocos Norte President, the program is aired every Wednesday over DWFB Radyo ng Bayan, the most popular AM radio station in the north, with coverage as far as Cagayan and Ilocos Sur, the nearest provinces.

From the time of its launch and as of June 2017, fifteen (15) radio interviews have been conducted, with resource speakers from ZCIN, Ilocos Norte Medical Society, Intergrated Bar of the Philippines – Ilocos Norte Chapter, Red Cross Youth Volunteers, private individuals, and experts from their chosen fields.

Topics covered the following: Women’s Health and Concerns, Women’s Rights, all aspects (Legal, Psychological, Medical) of Teenage Pregnancy, Parenting, Bullying, HIV/AIDS Awareness, the Drug Problem, lives of Solo Parents and Oversees Foreign Workers, Challenges of the Working Mother, Weddings and Make-up Tips, Caring for the Eyes during the summer months. Due to the interest on the topics, many of the guests were invited to do a second interview on their topic. Airing of the interviews were likewise aired on other days aside from the designated broadcast dates.

Facebook page: Usapang Babae at Iba Pa; plans are underway to have it covered on cable TV, and topics to be featured in Ilocos Times.

2) Organized and took part in the celebration for Women’s Month such as the Opening Parade of Laoag City;

3) Joined and participated as judges at the “Kinni-Kinni” (Strut) for Women’s Rights Parade of the Province of Ilocos

Norte. ZCIN members rendered a dance during the celebration;

4) Participated in the Search for Sunshine Women of Laoag City;

5) ZCIN was selected as the leading Women NGO to speak on Women Empowerment and Leadership at Accenture Ilocos Norte Delivery Center, and at one of only three such talks conducted in the country;

6) Organized and provided for a skills training activity on Cosmetology and Hair Science which was complemented with make-over treats;

7) Conducted a Male Advocates Forum with the topic on Women’s Rights, HIV/AIDS Awareness, and the Drug Menace;

8) A Women’s Summit was organized by ZCIN and the Local Council of Women with the City Government of Laoag. Topics covered were HIV/AIDS Awareness and the Drug Menace with film viewing on the life of an AIDS victim;

9) On March 26, 2017, as part of the Women’s Month celebration, ZCIN with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and the Broadcasters Association (Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas – KBP) which includes all the AM radio stations in the province, hold a press conference on the activities of the club, and significance of Women’s Month.

• ZCIN has established linkages and conducted activities with the following institutions and organizations:

Girl Scout of the Philippines (GSP) Ilocos Norte-Laoag Council Philippine Red Cross Ilocos Norte Chapter Philippine National Police (PNP) through its Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD), Department of Social Welfare and Development Office (DSWD) Department of Education (DepEd) Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) through its provincial and local units Local Government Units through the offices of the Chief Executive and Local Council of the 2 cities and 21

municipalities in Ilocos Norte Federation of Non-Government Organizations of Ilocos Norte Local Council of Women of Laoag City and Province of Ilocos Norte Local Council of Women of Badoc Gender and Development Office (Province of Ilocos Norte) Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and the Broadcasters Association (Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas

• ZCIN partnered with Ilocos Norte National High School (INNHS) Z Club on the following activities: 1) Teen Talk: Forum on Saying No to Teenage Pregnancy & Early Marriage and Teenage Vices 2) Charity Garage Sale 3) Christmas Gift-Giving 2016 4) PNP Fun Walk and Zumba (16 Day Campaign activity) 5) Lighting of the Provincial Capitol to campaign color orange (16 Day Campaign activity)

• ZCIN nominates INNHS Z Club for the Emma L. Conlon Award

• ZCIN manifests its support to the Zonta International Foundation through its donation of $100 and

members’ donation and purchase of the Zonta pins;

• ZCIN ties up with Karmelli Hospital in raising awareness and prevention of breast cancer with a short talk on the topic and free breast examination, coupled with free bone scanning and low blood testing;

• Christmas 2016 Gift-Giving at Badoc, Ilocos Norte for 100 families displaced by Typhoon Lawin;

• Together with Friends Indeed USA and Servecare Missioners Group, one of the most active Fil-

American organization in New York USA, ZCIN was able to conduct a feeding, humanitarian, and medical mission for more than 1,000 children and their parents from the day care centers of the 81 barangays in Laoag City;

• Conducted a medical mission for more than 200 patients of San Lorenzo Medical and Dental Charity

Clinic on its Anniversary;

• As part of its continued support for the Ob-Gyne Charity Ward at the Gov. Roque B. Ablan Sr. Memorial Hospital (GRBASMH), ZCIN visits and donates maternity packs for 30 mothers last August 2016;

• Attended forums organized by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines Ilocos Norte Chapter.

• Participated in the following activities organized by the Federated NGOs of Ilocos Norte: Dulang Festival of the City of Laoag NGO Night and the Local Council for Women Night which are part of the month-long activities of Laoag City

Festival

• Members have served as guest speakers and representing the club in festival celebrations in towns and municipalities of the province of Ilocos Norte;

• ZCIN formally receives from the City of Laoag, a Deed of Usufruct for a 400 square meter property to be leased for free for 40 years. Fundraising plans are underway for the construction of the ZCIN building where services of the club (legal, medical, consultation, skills training, etc.) and advocacy work (forum, display of past projects/activities) can be continued;

• ZCIN is formally accredited and duly recognized by the Province of Ilocos Norte in April 2017 and by the City of Laoag in September 2016, allowing ZCIN membership in special bodies of the local government units, participation in decision-making or involvement in the delivery of basic services and facilities;

• ZCIN participates in the Philippine Red Cross Anniversary Celebration and Bloodletting Activity in May 2017;

• As of June 2017, ZCIN has been featured in 8 editions of Ilocos Times, in an average of 3 whole pages/edition, allowing ZCIN greater visibility and awareness of its advocacies and services;

Parent Education Program on budgeting, hygiene and proper nutrition;

Career Orientation Programs in different high schools;

Sponsored a training for secondary Math and Science teachers of the Department of Education, Division of Ilocos Norte, with nine teachers from the Ateneo de Manila University (High School) as trainors

Support to the Braille Education at the A.P. Santos Elementary School in Laoag City;

Women's forums on health, violence and women's rights

Lectures on Teenage Pregnancies and Early Marriages in the celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child.

Health forum on Early Detection Breast Cancer in cooperation of the local government of Dingras, Ilocos Norte, the Philippine Breast Cancer Foundation and the Philippine College of Surgeons.

Celebrates United Nations' Day to keep up with the tradition as embodied in the Zonta International Calendar of Events to observe for World Peace.

Celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child to promote self-respect in girls and to inculcate in the young minds of the children the importance of self-actualization for a brighter future.

2) Current Advocacy Projects • 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

1) Distributed Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women banners with hotline numbers to the Women’s Desk,

Social Welfare and Provincial Capitol (PINK), to the 2 cities and 21 municipalities in the province;

2) Submitted petition letters to all city and municipality local councils for their information and adoption through an ordinance/resolution supporting the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in particular, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG5) which is dedicated to women empowerment and gender equality;

3) Radio Interview on the campaign by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) and over DWFB Radyo ng Bayan Radio Station;

4) Carried out Self-Defense Training in coordination with the Philippine National Police at the GSP Senior Saranay Camp 2016 with 1,600 Girl Scouts from 43 high schools, belonging to grades 7-10;

5) Conducted forum on Say No to Teenage Pregnancy at the Ilocos Norte National High School Annex (Caooacan);

6) Display of Zonta Says NO to VAW banners with hotline numbers to the Women’s Desk, Social Welfare and Provincial Capitol (PINK) in different establishments in the city and in the neighbouring municipalities;

7) ZCIN formally opened and led the campaign with A Walk, Zumba, Self-Defense Training and a Poster Slogan Contest in the City of Laoag, joining the more than 1,000 women leaders who took part in the activity

8) Together with the Z Club Ilocos Norte National High School (INNHS), ZCIN joins and supports the Fun Walk and Zumba activity on the 16 Days Campaign of the PNP Ilocos Norte Chapter. With TV coverage and broadcast the same day;

9) Held an Oratorical Contest (Secondary Level), adopting the campaign as the theme. Participated in by 6 of the biggest high schools in Laoag City

10) Provided a Skills Training activity on Meat Processing for the women whose cases are ongoing;

11) Carried out a Male Advocates Forum with the topics Psychological Consequences of Abuse, the Laws and Statistics on VAW, and Anti-Trafficking of Persons;

12) To recognize Human Rights Day which will fall on the last day of the campaign, ZCIN hosted a forum for women leaders on the topic of Women’s Rights, Human Trafficking, and Parliamentary Procedures.

14) Provided press releases and pictures on the campaign which were all printed in Ilocos Times, the local newspaper, and broadcasted over radio and TV;

15) Lighting of the Provincial Capitol in a glow of orange, our campaign color. It was a manifestation of the support of the Province to the campaign, and its acknowledgement of the work that ZCIN and ZI do for the people. With radio, print, and TV coverage;

16) Forum “Say NO to Teenage Pregnancies and Early Marriages”, covering the health risks, psychological effects, legal aspects, including the discussion on rape, during the GSP Senior Saranay Camp 2016 with 1,600 Girl Scouts from 43 high schools, belonging to grades 7-10.

• Launched the first of planned ZCIN WOMEN EMPOWERMENT FORUMS for the 21 municipalities and

2 cities in the Province of Ilocos Norte Held on March 29, 2017 and attended by more than 200 members of the Local Council of Women and Province

of Ilocos Norte Government Youth Arm, SIRIB, at the municipality of Badoc, Ilocos Norte. Purpose: To give support to the commitment made by the LGU’s of the province through the passing of the

resolution by the Local Council or Sangguniang Bayan, manifesting support for SDG5 which is dedicated to women empowerment and gender equality, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by the United Nations and countries belonging to it.

Provide information on the following topics: Financial Literacy, HIV/AIDS Awareness & Women’s Health, Women’s Rights & Human Trafficking, and Support to Survivors of Gender-Based Violence.

• Conducted Forums on Saying No to Teenage Pregnancy and Early Marriages at the following: 1) Batac National High School: attended by 400 students 2) Caooacan National High School: attended by 250 students, parents, and barangay leaders 3) Girl Scout of the Philippines Saranay Camp 2016 with 1,600 students from 45 high schools 4) Dingras National High School: attended by 400 students 5) Ilocos Norte National High School: attended by more than a thousand students 6) Mariano Marcos State University Laboratory High School: attended by 500 students

• Celebration of the International Day of the Girl-Child To raise awareness on the importance of the girl-child, a lecture-forum was conducted for 200 students

belonging to grades 6, at Gabu National High School. Banners commemorating the celebration were put up in the different establishments in the city and in the

neighbouring towns.

• Celebrated United Nations' Day to keep up with the tradition as embodied in the Zonta International Calendar of Events to observe for World Peace.

Membership: Every Zonta project/activity is Zonta International is mission focused. Likewise, the success for every project/activity lies on the participation, knowledge, enthusiasm of the members, as well as the resources available. Thus far, ZCIN has engaged in the following activities:

• Installation of New Officers and Induction of 5 new members was held on September 3, 2016;

• 24 members of the club attended BI 2016-2018 1st Training and Refresher Seminar at Currimao, Ilocos Norte last September 4, 2016;

• 1st Area Meeting for the Biennium was attended by 18 members. 10 members received certificates of loyalty for their 10, 20, 30 years of membership to the club, with their loyalty pins to be presented on November 23, 2017, Zonta Day;

• Orientation of new members: August 10, 2016 - 5 new members May 3, 2017 - 2 new members

• Maintain the club FB page to continue to provide the members with information and updates on the

activities of the club;

• Plans are underway for the establishment of Divine Word College of Laoag Golden Z Club and Mariano Marcos State University Z Club;

• Provided a report to Zonta International on the club’s activities for the 16-Day Campaign which was featured on the ZI website;

• ZCIN holds monthly general meetings with fellowship gatherings and dinner hosted by the members celebrating their birthdays for the month. Bigger celebrations have included the following: United Nations Day 2016: Members came in different national costumes with contest for

Miss United Nations. Christmas Party 2016: Theme is “Zonta Goes Fanta-Z” and members came in fantasy

costumes. Yellow Rose Day 2017: 1) Past president were gifted with Certificates of Appreciation for

grateful acknowledgment of their services to the club; 2) Film viewing; 3) Sale of bag tags. Raised more than P25,000 from the Yellow Rose Fundraising Project which included members’ assessment and the selling of bag tags.

• 39th Anniversary Celebration of ZCIN activities: Medical mission with 100 patients at the San Lorenzo Medical and Dental Charity and

turn-over of p15,000 worth of medicines; Induction of 2 new members A tribute and Certificates of Recognition were presented to ZCIN charter members Short history on ZCIN and Zonta International in anticipation of its 100th anniversary

• Other fellowship activities: Coffee parties, dance practices, trips out-of-town, club activities such as

our town-to-town & city campaign;

• Prayer services for sister Zontian Alegria Valenciano and Zontian Judith Francisco, and for member’s immediate family members who have passed on.
