HL7 continues to advance on many fronts. v2.8 messages are just around the corner, and we now hear much about the capabilities of FHIR and "Consolidated CDA".

Come to this workshop to explore recent developments in popular HL7 and other standards and how to lever-age these new capabilities in practical implementations to address both existing and emerging needs, particularly for communication of clinical information.

Most Australian implementa-tions of HL7v2 messaging are still based on v2.3, v2.3.1 or v2.4, but professional certifi-cation is now against v2.7 and there are different opin-ions on how to use the new capabilities to share more data, more widely and more uniformly. The choices, im-plications and differing view-

points will be explored and discussed.

FHIR, or "Fast Healthcare Interoperability Re-sources" (pronounced "Fire") is the latest trend in eHealth interoperability technolo-gy. It defines a set of granu-lar concepts that can be elec-tronically exchanged in order to quickly and effectively solve system interoperability problems. Originally devel-oped by Grahame Grieve in Australia for the world mar-ket, the technology is open and freely available through HL7. Version 1 of FHIR is about to be balloted through HL7 as a Draft Standard for Trial Use (DSTU).

Attendees at this workshop will be intro-duced to recent FHIR developments and the pathway to discover the magic of FHIR at

the first Australian FHIR Con-nectathon being held in con-junction with the Internation-al HL7 Interoperability Con-ference 2013 (IHIC 2013) on 28-29 October 2013. FHIR developer Grahame Grieve will also be presenting at the workshop.

eHealth implementations around the world are increas-ingly looking toward "consolidated CDA" as a means of pre-packaging and selecting required formats for the collaborative sharing of clinical content. The work-shop will review this capabil-ity and demonstrate how these approaches are ap-plied.

Sarah Gaunt, Senior Data Architect, Lantana Consulting Group, will explain what Consolidated CDA is about, highlighting the main trends and the issues surrounding the development, implementation and use of this technology for communication of clinical content.

Grahame Grieve, Health Intersections, developer of FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) will introduce FHIR, give an update on recent developments, and outline the pathway to the first Australian FHIR Connectathon in October. FHIR is being considered in many situations as a fast effective way of integrating established and new approaches to healthcare interoperability.

Dr Stephen Chu, HL7 International Patient Care WG Co-chair will brief us on current work by HL7 International on standards to support communication and maintenance of clinical care plans.

Dr Michael Legg, Chair of RCPA Informatics Advisory Committee, will examine emerging requirements being driven by changes in pathology practice and the implications for communication of this information using existing standards.

All of our speakers have hands-on experience with eHealth interoperability standards and solutions. The day includes time for workshop discussion of specific questions and for feedback on issues concerning the implementation, use and development of HL7 standards in Australia.

Michael Steine, BT Global Services, will review the evolution of the HL7 v2 standard, explain the additional features in the later versions which have been added to meet current needs and discuss different views on how these should be implemented in Australia.

Dr Vince McCauley, Chair of IHE Australia, will discuss practical implementation of standards for representation and communication of clinical information, the role of IHE profiles, the challenges and reality of conformance testing, and some implications of the growth in mHealth.

Brett Esler, Principal Consultant Oridashi, will share his front-line experiences, including working with Wave Sites on the communica-tion of clinical information using SMD, ELS and Clinical/CDA package and implications for integration with more traditional messaging-based paradigms.
