July 2011mdashWelcome to the ON3 Nationals
We are excited to have you participate in our inaugural event that we believe
will serve as a launching pad of new technology driven businesses in the years to
come The original vision behind ON3 was to provide a venue where we would in-
spire and encourage members of an entrepreneurial ecosystem to work together to
discover support and showcase the countryrsquos talent We would employ best prac-
tices and offer to the regional runner-ups and grand prize winners an experience like
no other including access to experts and professionals both domestic and interna-
tional that could help accelerate their initiatives Further we would enable meaning-
ful participation of the Philippines in the Global Tech Economy by creating strong
partnerships to support the Grand Prize winners as they compete for attention of ven-
ture capitalists in Silicon Valley and the rest of the world
The ON3 Nationals is the annual ldquofinalrdquo competition where regional tech-
related start up and growth companies from around the country will compete for the
Grand Prizemdash a three (3) month immersion in Silicon Valley These companies were
selected by esteemed judges during our two (2) ON3 events (VisMin and NCR-Luzon)
hosted in March and May 2011 respectively It is during the Nationals that this
group will articulate demonstrate and showcase their value proposition to a broader
group of judges consisting of venture capitalists successful entrepreneurs prominent
government officials and high profile tech executives
This year we will conduct the Nationals during the National Science amp Tech-
nology Week Expo hosted by DOST from July 27 to July 30 at the SMX Convention
Center in Pasay City It is the perfect venue given that achievements by accomplished
individuals in Science amp Technology will be recognized and celebrated and we want
everyone to celebrate with them
It is also ideal given that this program was developed in 2010 as a result of the
partnership we entered with three agencies mdash DOST DTI and DFA mdash in August 2009
Further it is with DOSTrsquos financial support that ON3 Grand Prize winners will be able
to bear the cost of living expenses during the three month immersion in Silicon Valley
We thank DOST for partnering with us and including us in the NSTW expo
In closing on behalf of the Science amp Technology Advisory CouncilmdashSilicon
Valley and the ON3 Production team we extend a heartfelt thanks for your interest
and look forward to a wonderful event in July To our partners and supporters we
aspire to forge even stronger relationships creating unique experiences and contrib-
uting to great successes As always we thank you for joining us in this journey to
help secure a bright spot for the Philippines in the global economy
All the best

GLOBALIZATION
The age in which we live has changed dramatically and continues to evolve with
technological advancements providing an opportunity for countries with fewer re-
sources to compete globally These developments coupled with infrastructure invest-

this new worldwide market on a different level
We believe the Philippines is uniquely positioned to take advantage of the
worldrsquos transformation The countryrsquos cultural strengthsmdash passion for creativity an
appreciation for high quality services and products deep value of education love of
family and entertainment strong social circles and favorable geological characteristics
mdash rich biodiverse landscape in the Asia Pacific mdash contribute nicely to the countryrsquos po-

work of sites in Asia Moreover ON3 participants grabbed headlines during the same
month VisMin regional winner Piclyf was invited to Echelon 2011 in Singapore
and served as the only Filipino start-up of the 10 total companies invited to
pitch at the event Meanwhile Ayannah our eServices 2010 Businesses Take a
Pitch winner won the VC Taskforce Seed Stage Elevator Pitch contest in San
Francisco pitching to Inspiration VC XG Ventures ( Ex-Google Ventures) Claremont

Building a startup in a developing country The pitfalls and opportunities
In the spotlight The Philippine startup scene
Wersquove heard of tons of successful startups from countries like US and Europe but wersquove barely heard of any success stories from developing countries That doesnrsquot necessarily mean there arenrsquot any An inter-esting country to dig deeper into would be the Philippines which some might not have even heard of but in fact has a very Internet and mobile-savvy population
So whatrsquos it like being a startup from a developing country Well theyrsquore definitely missing out on all the comforts such as seed funding collaborative work spaces access to a mentor base VCs and Angels dedi-cated business training as well as visibility via networking and pitch events
To be quite frank the startup lsquoscenersquo in the Philippines is almost bordering nonexistent considering the size and reach of its niche Theyrsquore definitely lacking the right kind of leadership and exposure to gain attention from the rest of the world Itrsquos a shame because itrsquos a country rich with talent and unique ideas but local startups often fail to launch due to the unfavorable circumstances of growing in a resistive envi-ronment I donrsquot mean to undermine Filipino startups at large in fact there are a few that stand out ndash and one in particular has caught my attention

I spoke to Eric Su co-founder and developer of PicLyf a visual-content focused publishing platform ndash or
picture blogging if you will The company is a small group of Internet geeks-slash-entrepreneurs based
in the Philippines who have endured countless challenges and is now on its way to success
