CLIMATE KNOWLEDGE PORTALfor the Philippines

BRIEF USER’S GUIDE

Version 1. September 2013

Page 2: OML Center Knowledge Portal - User's Guide

A “one-stop shop” on climate change- and disaster-related information for the Philippines.

It contains: Basic information on climate

change and disaster risk reduction and management;

Tools for downscaling and projection, and sectoral impact, adaptation, and vulnerability assessments;

Downscaled climate projections per province (maps, view and download data by request);

Useful resources and links to publications, institutions and experts.

ABOUT

Page 3: OML Center Knowledge Portal - User's Guide

Our main goal in climate science is to guide decision makers in crafting plans for the next 10 or 20 years and beyond. Strategic planning requires usable and application-appropriate information about climate variability and change.

Climate information is an important input in decision making especially for adaptation planning. Adaptation measures will help build the resilience of communities which is key factor in sustainable development. Climate projections provide a set of plausible future climate and its corresponding impacts.

This will allow decision makers to better visualize what these different impacts imply nationally and locally. Thus, will enable the formulation of plans and strategies to adapt to a changing environment.

PURPOSE

Page 4: OML Center Knowledge Portal - User's Guide

The portal is intended for use by:

DECISION-MAKERS to help them formulate adaptation programs and projects and to plan for long-term infrastructure investments;

RESEARCHERS AND STUDENTS for further understanding of impacts, assessing vulnerabilities and recommending adaptation strategies;

PRIVATE SECTOR to allow the assessment of future risks, for better planning, management and investments in infrastructure

And ultimately,

FARMERS, FISHERFOLKS, EMPLOYEES AND COMMUNITIES to help them create better-informed decisions in the face of current and future climate- and disaster- related events.

DOWNSCALING APPROACHES

This portal provides an overview of the tools for generating climate scenarios and how to modify the spatial resolution of climate data (downscaling). It also provides links to additional information regarding the tools.

TOOLS/Scenario Generation

HOW TO USE IT? If you are interested to

know the different methods and tools under the two general downscaling techniques, under the Tools Menu, select Scenario Generation and click either Dynamic Downscaling or Statistical Downscaling.

If you know which method you are looking for, select from the first column, and click. You will be brought to the desired page containing description and relevant sources of information

IMPACT, VULNERABILITY AND ADAPTATION ASSESSMENT

Contains different frameworks, methodologies and tools which have been developed at the farm, watershed, regional and national scale on assessing impacts, vulnerability and adaptation.

HOW TO USE IT? If you are interested to

know the different methods and tools under a specific sector, choose which sector from the filter and click. A list of methods and tools will be provided.

If you know which method you are looking for, select from the first column, and click. You will be brought to the link / website which contains the necessary information.

CLIMATE PROJECTIONS

This page will contain both climate change projections and observed climate variables (rainfall and temperature) up to the provincial level.

To view your area of interest, select the area of interest from the map, or key in or click national or regional.

DATA/ Climate Change Projections

Page 12: OML Center Knowledge Portal - User's Guide

Once you have chosen the region, all provinces that have data can be selected from the drop down list. You may also chose National which will provide country-wide data.

Choose the appropriate parameters from the dropdown menu.

Then click Generate to change map and table view.

Page 13: OML Center Knowledge Portal - User's Guide

The page will then generate:(1) a map containing the

climate information on the specific region/province using your chosen parameters.

(2) a table or figure containing relevant data values

(3) Source of information is also displayed to provide you with the appropriate context and information about how the data was generated
