The weather this time of year can be unpredictable, so it is necessary to keep an eye out for bad conditions while on the water. In spite of the wind and the rain this week, bass fishing is great. The water temperatures are in the low 80’s and the fish are feeding on shad and shin-ers. Shiner fishing has been outstanding with large num-bers being caught first thing in the morning. Several days we have even been able to catch bass on dead shin-ers after we have used all of our live bait. Artificial baits are working well also, with top water plugs and spinner baits performing best dur-ing the very early morning

hours. Senko’s and other types of slow moving plas-tics will work best when the fish slow down and are no longer chasing bait. Flipping and pitching presentations around heavy grass or reed clumps are accounting for the larger bass being caught.Panfish are still biting with bluegill being caught in big numbers around ar-eas of heavy cover and along grasslines. Crick-ets, red worms and grass shrimp are all viable choic-es. Crickets and red worms are both readily available at local tackle shops. Grass shrimp when they can be found are the better bait for multiple species of fish.

Our community has more than 1,300 special needs chil-dren enrolled in the school system alone and not a single special needs park that they can visit. The Kiwanis Club will be soliciting corporate sponsorships for this endeavor soon, but right now we are trying to get the ball rolling by winning a $25,000 grant from Landscape Structures, a well-known playground equipment manufacturer.
