OIL PASTEL RELIEF — RESIST DRAWING PROJECT This is an easy art project that requires some energy. Oil pastels are the key ingredient, and they can be messy. Yet they can also achieve wonderful effects with color, so keep some rags handy, and wear an apron or old clothes to tackle this drawing technique. STEP 1. Take one sheet of paper and fold in half vertically or length- wise to crease. Then tear or cut in half with scissors leaving two smaller sheets of the same size. STEP 2. Take one small sheet (reserve other) and place on a larger sheet. Choose colors you want and simply begin scribbling, pressing hard to fill the page, mixing and layering. STEP 3. Once filled with color, lift the sheet to shake and brush off excess oil-pastel crumbs. Materials: 2-3 sheets of 8 1/2x 11” drawing paper, protected flat surface to work on, scissors, ball point pen, oil pastels, watercolors, cup, brush, and access to water.

RELIEF — RESIST

DR AWING PROJECT

This is an easy art project that requires some energy. Oil pastels are the key ingredient, and they can be messy. Yet they can also achieve wonderful effects with color, so keep some rags handy, and wear an apron or old clothes to tackle this drawing technique.

STEP 1. Take one sheet of paper and fold in half vertically or length-wise to crease. Then tear or cut in half with scissors leaving two smaller sheets of the same size.

STEP 2. Take one small sheet (reserve other) and place on a larger sheet. Choose colors you want and simply begin scribbling, pressing hard to fill the page, mixing and layering.

STEP 3. Once f i l led w i th co lor, lift the sheet to shake and brush off excess oil-pastel crumbs.

Materials: 2-3 sheets of 81/2” x 11” drawing paper, protected flat surface to work on, scissors, ball point pen, oil pastels, watercolors, cup, brush, and access to water.

FINAL NOTE: Thank you for trying this art project. You can shake your hands out now! This kind of drawing can be done on a larger scale.

STEP 4. Next set the colored sheet face-up on larger 8 1/2” x 11” paper. Place other small sheet of matching size over the one with color.

STEP 5. Begin drawing on top sheet with pen, pressing firmly. You choose what to draw, but keep l ines and patterns simple. Fill the space or leave areas blank, resting your hands now and then.

STEP 6. When finished, lift off top sheet to reveal colored drawing on opposite side. You can leave your drawing as is or go on to next step.

STEP 7. Add another layer i f you wish by brushing a thin watercolor wash over top. Mix paints with some water in a cup, using a combination of colors: black, green, purple, or blue. Don’t make it too thick or dark (you want a transparent layer of paint).

STEP 8. Working quick ly, brush a thin wash over your colored pattern, trying not to go over the same areas more than once. This will help brighten the pattern, adding interest and depth.
