Vision & mission
Center of the Ub City, 2012
As mayor, I’m directing my work towards strengthening economic, cultural and intellectual capacities of our city and the transformation of these qualities in
sustainable development.
Our history
The first communities established in present-day municipality of Ub, according to the historians, are discov-ered in today’s settlements of Trlić, Kalinovac and Brgule. Those remains are dating back to the time of the Vinča culture, that is, in the period around 5000 BC. The settlement Čučuge still has traces of the Bronze Age.According to the written traces, the Ub place is situated between the villages Gunjevac and Sovljak. The most realistic is the legend of the origin of the name of this place is the one that says that the word “Ub” meaning “place”, from the Latin word “urb”. According to the old Slavic legend, the place was built in the reign of Prince Kocelj, and was named after his brother Slavoljub. Over time, from his full name, just word “Ub” was rest.
The territory of Ub was inhabited since ancient times. The first mention of hydro-nym “Tamnava” was given by an ancient writer Jordanes, calling it Flumen niger, which was later in the Slovenian translation has emerged in Tamnava - black river. The earliest known record which mention Ub is the Agreement in Tata 1426, concluded between the Hungarian King Sigismund and Despot Stefan Lazarević.
According to reliable historic evi-dences, there was a major battle in the First Serbian Uprising between Serbian rebels and Turkish impe-rial forces. Thus, in the April of 1806, battle happened at Avala hill in village Čučuge, where Džora Osman, a famous Turkish military leader, was beaten by Jakov Nenadović,
commander of Tamnava forces.
Tamnava preserved the evidences of the ancient times lifestyle. The traces have been preserved through names, or through various remnants of folk traditions and customs. The hardest things to preserve were the monuments of differ-ent cultures, since this area was always attractive for settlement. There were numerous fortresses, orthodox and catholic monasteries, churches and towers
in Tamnava’s hilly and difficult to reach places.
There was a school in the monastery Dokmir that has worked 8 years until the 1788th when Mahmud Pasha
Bušatlija set it on fire.In the second half of the 18th century Hadži-Ruvim lived there. He founded the school of arts and xylography. One of his students was Peter Nikolajević Moler, a painter, and later one of Karađorđe’s
warlords.
Prota Mateja Nenadović endowed the gospel brought from Russia to the church of the Vrelo village in 1804th. In the same church there is a monu-ment dedicated to soldiers from the surrounding villages fallen in the Balkan wars and the World War I. Church in village Novaci was once a monastery, and holds a memory to Serbian uprisings and the time when
it was a powder magazine.
Mining Company “Kolubara” plans to open new mining field “Radlje-vo” in 2014. Coal reserves at the field are estimated at 330 million
tons.
Exploitation of the field “Radljevo” will be performed in accordance with the supplying needs of power plant “Nikola Tesla A and B”, “Kol-ubara A” and TPP “Kolubara B”, whose construction is widely ex-
pected.
A significant resource of the mu-nicipality is the lignite field “Zviz-dar”. Research work in this field is ongoing, and estimates of coal
reserves are 280 million tons.

Branislav Petronijević, philosopher
Society, culture, sportsMany things had strong impact on social history of Ub and affected the spirit of the community. Church and school in the first half of the 19th century, the City Library in the second half of the same century later, in the 20th century theater life nurtured by the school bench, then music school, and life in his time elite teacher-training school, then school, magic footballs, tradition bars as specific content and the institutions of social life, history, public and private, and at the center of people with their individual
spirit, affecting him in spirit and environment that clears the way for the individual.
In the city park, you will meet Serbian giants of science, culture and spirituality: Branislav Petronijević and Bozidar Knežević, philoso-phers, and Radomir Plaović Raša, an acting legend, born right here. Across the street is the art gallery of interesting architecture and
exquisite art program.
For those who are not familiar with the history of Ub, it’s unexpected. For those that is known, or at least
partially aware of it, history reminds ...dr Miroslav Perišić
“Everything is nothing,
nothing is everything.
It must not be all,
but part of it.”
In the Municipality there are over twenty pre-served Orthodox churches. In addition, the monastery Dokmir from the XVI century, the once famous medieval and copying school Hadži-Ruvim, has significant arhive. Today
it is mapped by many travel agencies.
New temple in Ub, Svetog Vaznesenja Gos-podnjeg, with over two thousand square meters of frescoes and murals and artistic treasuries of Russian academician Nikolai Muhin is the widely acknowledged as the
most beautiful church in Serbia.
Sanja Ilić & Balkanika, Bora Dugić, Biljana Krstić and Bistrik, St George Stringers ... can testify about the beauty of the church and
its churchyard.
Originally shy, now with a clear ambition, Ub municipality indicates its natural beauty, rustic landscapes, idyllic landscapes, his-toric monuments, shady river banks. Hunt-ing grounds, mill reels that are turning once again, recommended for travelers who are looking for peace and tranquility that re-
freshes and relishing.
Where you come from and where you go through a rich Tamnava not go wrong, be-cause you’ll come across at least one corner, a landscape, or detail by which you must stop and let you take the colors, scents and
luxurious nature.
Is it a little bit at this time of concrete and asphalt, noise and grayness of everyday life?
All this is in the immediate neigh-borhood of Belgrade. At the cross-roads between capital and Brankov-ina in early morning or at dusk, Ub and Tamnava will win by storm and become your favorite tourist desti-
nation.
Reason enough - hospitable, ro-mantic landscapes, sunsets on the lake, deer on the lawn, pheasants in the undulating grass, a hundred year old pear breakfast in the village yard, mature hot cream and cake under the eaves of the mill Čučuge, legendary taste of local kebabs and tobacco cracklings Ub preserved in pubs and restaurants, the monastery bell Dokmir, or Morning coffee on the terrace of one of the many cafes.
And that night in the villages Tam-nava smell of freshly mown mead-ows and just chilled milk in “vajat”.Just in one day gather the impression that will barely fit around the curious
sightseers.
It was originally fishermen discovery, and then, the most important Serbian writers and critics every second year organize gathering to a literary picnic. It is no wonder, if at the first twilight, the surface of the water is dis-turbed by the fish or some lost verse. Again, if you come, you will not resist and not to ask “is there a place for a cottage or fisherman’s house?”. There is, and it better than you can imagine. And you will no longer be a guest,
but the host.Welcome!
Tourism & sightseeing...first of all, lake Paljuvi. There, near the town and near the future route of the South Adriatic highway, glittering lake covering more than 150 acres is
full of fish...
