MBT™ Versatile+APPLIANCE SYSTEM

1

In more than 20 years of experience with the preadjusted appliance, Drs. McLaughlin, Bennett and Trevisi have all noted

its very positive aspects, but have also seen a need for refinements in certain areas. These improvements are at the core of the

MBT™ Prescription and have been incorporated into four current bracket designs from 3M Unitek (Clarity™ Brackets, Victory

Series™ Brackets, Victory Series™ Low Profile Brackets and Unitek™ Full Size Brackets. Additionally, for orthodontists who

prefer a self-ligating option, SmartClip™ Self-Ligating Brackets are offered in the MBT Prescription). These options give

patients greater flexibility while enabling the orthodontist to provide maximum control and treatment efficiency.

The MBT™ Versatile+ System

appliance provides several features

that significantly improve clinical

management of orthodontic cases.

These features are as follows:

Anterior Tip

Reduced anterior tip was incorporated

into the appliance to conform to

Andrew’s original research, and to

dramatically reduce the anchorage

needs of each case.

Upper Posterior Tip

Upper bicuspid brackets are provided

with 0° of tip to keep these teeth in a

more upright (Class I) position. Upper

molar brackets are provided with 0° of

tip, which when placed parallel to the

occlusal plane, introduce 5° of tip into

the upper molars.

Lower Posterior Tip

Lower posterior tip in the first and

second bicuspid brackets is

maintained at 2°, to slightly incline

these teeth forward (in a Class I

direction). For the lower first and

second molars, 0° tipped brackets are

provided, which when placed parallel

to the occlusal plane, introduces 2° of

tip to these teeth.

Incisor Torque

Upper incisor brackets are provided

with additional palatal root torque,

while lower incisor brackets are

provided with additional labial root

torque. This adjustment aids in the

correction of the most common

torque problems occurring in the

incisor areas.

Upper Cuspid, Bicuspid and

Molar Torque

Upper cuspid and bicuspid brackets

are provided with the normal -7° of

torque. Upper molar brackets are

provided with an additional -5° of

buccal root torque (total -14°) to

reduce palatal cusp interferences with

these teeth.

Lower Cuspid, Bicuspid and

Molar Torque

Reduced progressive buccal crown

torque is provided in the brackets of

the lower cuspids and lower posterior

segments. This allows for buccal

uprighting of these teeth, which is

beneficial in most cases.

In/Out Modifications

Because upper second bicuspids are

sometimes smaller than upper first

bicuspids, brackets with an additional

.5 mm of in/out compensation are

provided for these. If upper bicuspids

are the same size, upper first bicuspid

brackets can be used on all upper

bicuspids.

A review of the literature on arch

form reveals that three basic arch

forms have been described by

many clinicians — Tapered, Ovoid

and Square.

When superimposed, they vary

primarily in inter-cuspid width, with

a range of approximately 5 mm. Inter-

molar widths are quite similar and the

posterior aspects of the archwires can

be widened or narrowed as needed.

OrthoForm™ I Tapered

Provides the most narrow inter-cuspid

width and is indicated for patients

with narrow, tapered arch forms. It is

particularly important to use this arch

form in patients with narrow arch

forms and gingival recession in the

cuspid and bicuspid regions, a

situation that occurs most frequently

in adult orthodontic cases.

OrthoForm™ II Square

Indicated for patients with broad arch

forms or in the first portion of

treatment in cases that require buccal

uprighting of the lower posterior

segments and expansion of the

upper arch.

OrthoForm™ III Ovoid

Has been used most frequently by the

authors over the past fifteen years. By

using this arch form, along with

settling and retention procedures, post

treatment relapse has been minimized

in the majority of treated cases.

3

It has been recommended that

preadjusted appliance brackets be

placed with the twin bracket wings

straddling, in a parallel fashion,

the vertical long axis of the clinical

crown, and that the center of the

bracket slot be placed on the center

of the clinical crown.

As with any preadjusted bracket

system, bracket positioning is the key

to successful treatment. With this

objective in mind, MBT System

treatment incorporates a unique

bracket positioning system that

provides individualized measurements

for bracket placement and also allows

for variations based upon differences

in tooth size.

This system uses redesigned bracket

positioning gauges with a unique color-

coded ID system that provides the

clinician easy-to-read measurements.

The bracket placement guide is a

superb adjunct to the placement of

preadjusted brackets using the direct

visualization technique.

Victory Series™ Miniature Metal Bracket System

The acknowledges industry standard for brackets, the

Victory Series miniature metal bracket system features high

bond strength, easily readable identification system and easier

bracket ligation. For ease of use, the brackets have been

designed with smoothly finished bicuspid tie-wings that

are slightly extended and offset gingivally away from the

tooth. Deep tie-wing undercuts assure easier and more

secure ligation.

An innovative pad design, incorporating an 80 gauge

mesh bonding pad, matches the curvature of the tooth for

maximum contact and strong, consistent bond strength. Research

conducted and published by Howard University* reveals shear bond

strengths 40% to 50% higher for 80 gauge mesh vs. 100 gauge mesh on

bicuspids with macro-filled resins.

Also available are gingivally offset bicuspid brackets. This unique pad design features a larger bonding base and

radiused corners for enhanced base-to-tooth adaptation, providing improved bond strength.

The Victory Series bracket system also makes use of torque-in-base design techniques to provide level slot line-up,

and help avoid occlusal interference. A long axis scribe line is provided for accurate placement.

Victory Series miniature metal brackets from 3M Unitek. Providing products that make your life easier.

The low profile hookand small ball are milled

from a single piece of metalfor increased patient comfort.

3M Unitek has developed an innovative color coding systemthat assigns a different color to each quadrant of the mouth

for immediate identification. Within seconds, you can tell if abracket is in the right place.

Victory Series™ Low Profile Brackets

If you’ve been searching for a true mini metal bracket that’s uncompromising in ligation and control, victory is now

within your grasp. Our leading-edge design delivers uncompromising levels of control throughout the treatment process.

The bracket’s remarkable low profile greatly reduces occlusal interference. The bracket also features a contoured micro-

etched base. Positioning is made easier and more accurate because of the bracket’s rhomboid shape that follows the tooth’s

natural long axis.

Ample under tie-wing area means that bracket size is not sacrificed for

easy ligation. In fact, the tie-wing under cuts are deep enough to accommodate

double ligation.

These low profile brackets inspire confidence as part of the time-tested Victory Series and MBT™ bracket solutions.

At the same time, they offer the proven time-savings of our APC™ Adhesive Coated Appliance System. Choose the

APC™ II System or the APC™ PLUS System with color change adhesive.

Our compact, technically advanced Victory Series™

Buccal Tubes include a trouble-free integral convertible

cap that converts easily and consistently, every time.

All you have to do is lift and peel. This exclusive cap

also offers solid, one piece construction, eliminating

the possibility of braze or solder materials that can

leave a residue in the archwire slot. Victory Series

Buccal Tubes are designed with funneled and

radiused entries on both the headgear tube and archwire

slot, resulting in easy archwire insertion which can reduce

patient chairtime. Smooth, patient-friendly hooks

improve comfort for your patients. You’ll also appreciate

the strong construction, low-profile design and distal

notch that secures tie backs.

Victory Series Buccal Tubes. Reducing chair time,

increasing patient comfort and providing you with a well-

designed, reliable and predictable orthodontic solution.

A review of the literature on arch form

reveals that three basic arch forms have

been described by many clinicians —

Tapered, Ovoid and Square.

When superimposed, they vary

primarily in inter-cuspid width, with a

range of approximately 5 mm. Inter-

molar widths are quite similar and the

posterior aspects of the archwires can

be widened or narrowed as needed.

OrthoForm™ I Tapered

Provides the most narrow inter-cuspid

width and is indicated for patients

with narrow, tapered arch forms. It is

particularly important to use this arch

form in patients with narrow arch

forms and gingival recession in the

cuspid and bicuspid regions, a

situation that occurs most frequently

in adult orthodontic cases.

OrthoForm™ II Square

Indicated for patients with broad

arch forms or in the first portion of

treatment in cases that require buccal

uprighting of the lower posterior

segments and expansion of the

upper arch.

OrthoForm™ III Ovoid

Has been used most frequently by the

authors over the past fifteen years. By

using this arch form, along with

settling and retention procedures, post

treatment relapse has been minimized

in the majority of treated cases.
