Nativity Catholic Church 2 October 8, 2017

From the Pastor’s Desk October – Respect Life Month – The Church calls on all Catholics to embrace and live a consistent ethic of life. The month of October is the usual time when Catholics reflect on how well we live up to that call. For most Catholics, an “ethic of life” conjures up the notion of speaking out against abortion, advocating for the unborn, and protecting life from conception to natural death. While Catholics are to be passionate in this arena, a “consistent life ethic” means promoting the dignity of life for all – which necessarily implies making statements, reflecting on, and working at issues such as: peace, economic justice, alleviating hunger, securing health care for all, standing against capital punishment, promoting fair immigration and refugee policies – to name a few.

Listed below are some of the pro-life arenas that you could / should be involved in as a Catholic who supports a pro-life ethic. During this Respect Life month, I urge you to pray over and reflect on these areas where God might be calling you to serve:

Peaceful Prayer Vigils—See 40 Day for Life information on Page 5. HOPE Justice Ministries – our parish works with 28 other congregations throughout Hillsborough County in order to promote a

better life for our youth (Civil Citation), affordable housing, and better care for our elderly. HOPE works for systemic change rather than temporary fixes to these issues which affect our community. For more information, see Fr. Tapp or contact Pastoral Care 813.413.8351.

Feeding the Hungry: • PB&J – every other Friday, parishioners get together in our Social Hall and make PB&Js for the homeless (8 am-10:30 am).

Next Meeting: Friday, October 13th! • Food Bank – Nativity Parish Food Bank distributes over 250,000 lbs. of food to 45 entities throughout Hillsborough County.

We are always looking for volunteers to help at our warehouse in Dover – Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesday & Fridays – from 7 -11 am. For more information contact: 813.707.1523

• Food Pantry – Nativity Food Pantry helps well over 100 families from the Brandon area each week. Food is distributed each Thursday. Volunteers are always needed. For more information on how to help, please contact: 813.707.1523 or the Pastoral Care Office 813.413.4351.

You can also sign up for statewide and national legislative “life” alerts by contacting the Diocese of St. Petersburg Office of Life Ministry. (Visit: www.dosp.org/life/ or call 727.244.1611)

Hurricane / Disaster Relief—Donations can be made directly to Catholic Charities USA. 100% of your donations will go directly to relief efforts. A link can be found on our website www.nativitycatholicchurch.org. If you would like to donate material goods, here is a link about how and where to do that http://www.dosp.org/emergencyassistance-for-puerto-rico/

End of the Year Stewardship Report – Kudos to Rob Martin and his staff for putting together our annual Stewardship Report. The report is a wonderful depiction of how Nativity Parish puts faith into action and serves to build up God’s Kingdom in our midst. Please take a copy of the report home with you. And thank you for your faithful stewardship – praying with us, financially supporting our mission, and serving our sisters and brothers in Christ.

Weekly Reflection for October 8, 2017 Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

(courtesy of catholicsteward.com)

One of St. Paul’s favorite topics was prayer, and today’s reading from his letter to the Philippians is no exception to that. He says, “Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.” For Paul

all topics are appropriate for prayer because we need to share and consult with the Lord about everything.

God knows what is on our minds already, of course, but He also desires that we make a conscious effort to communicate with Him on these subjects. In addition, Paul points out that our prayers need to be infused with thanksgiving. We should not just petition the Lord and make requests. It is equally important that we think about, identify, and acknowledge our blessings.

We have often pointed out that stewardship is a life of gratitude, a way of living which encourages us to focus on gifts, not on problems and challenges all the time. If we strive to have grateful hearts, our prayers come much more easily, and we tend to be much happier and more upbeat in our lives.

The noted author, philosopher, journalist, and theologian G. K. Chesterton is well known in Catholic circles because he converted to Catholicism during his life, and was an excellent conveyor of the faith. In terms of living grateful lives he said, “I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought; and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.” That includes thanks to God.

Diocese of St. Petersburg’s Annual Red Mass

Friday, October 13 | 12:10pm | Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Tampa

Judges, lawyers, law students, law school professors, and others in the legal field are invited to attend the Mass, and judges and academics are invited to process in in their robes. The Mass will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Gregory L. Parkes, Bishop of the Diocese of St. Petersburg. Persons of any faith are invited to attend.

The "Red Mass" is a historical tradition within the Catholic Church dating back to the thirteenth century when it officially opened the term of the court for most European countries. The celebrants—government officials, lawyers and judges—would proceed into a church clothed in red vestments or red garments, signifying the fire of the Holy Spirit's guidance to all who pursue justice in their daily lives.

a Dios."
