But majority of Ontarians

concerned that home ownership will

be more difficult in the futureThe dream of home ownership is alive

and well among Ontario renters, with 70 percent reporting that they would like to buy atsome point in the future, according to a pollreleased today by the Ontario Real EstateAssociation (OREA).

However, the poll also revealed that 81per cent of Ontarians believe it is more diffi-cult to own a home now than it was for theirparents, and 89 per cent of Ontarians in gener-al are concerned that home ownership willbecome even more difficult in the future.

“We have an obligation to protect theaffordability of home ownership for futuregenerations,” said Barb Sukkau, President ofOREA. “From its impact on job creation to thehealthy and stable environment it provides forraising a family, home ownership matters topeople, communities and Ontario.

Over half (54 per cent) of renters citedaffordability as a key reason for not owning ahome and 70 per cent surveyed indicated theywould be more willing to consider owning ifthe government offered more tax breaks andincentives to offset costs for first time buyers.

“Today’s poll is compelling evidence thata majority of Ontarians are concerned aboutthe affordability of home ownership for them-selves and future generations,” said JohnWright, Senior Vice President of Ipsos Reid.

Home owners also report higher levels ofcivic engagement. The overwhelming majori-ty (82 per cent) of Ontario home owners havedonated to charity in the last two years; homeowners are much more likely to say they votedin the last municipal election than renters; and35 per cent of owners say they have volun-teered in their community.

“Support for home ownership meanssupport for strong communities and a betterOntario,” said Sukkau. “We are urging allpolitical parties in the 2011 provincial electionto commit to making home ownership moreaffordable for Ontarians.”

OREA is proposing three policy initia-

tives to strengthen home ownership in

Ontario:

• An improved Land Transfer Tax (LTT)Rebate for first-time home buyers. OREAestimates that an improved LTT rebatewould save a first-time buyer of an averageresale home almost $1,500.

• A permanent Ontario Home RenovationTax Rebate. A renovation tax rebate wouldcreate jobs and curb the growth of theunderground economy.

• Reintroduce the Ontario Home EnergyEfficiency Retrofit Rebate program.Investments in home energy efficiency willhelp home owners cope with rising energycosts and curb greenhouse gas emissions.

Other survey highlights included:

• 94 per cent of Ontarians think that owninga home provides a healthy and stable envi-ronment for raising a family.

• 93 per cent of home owners want taxes onbuying a home lowered.

• 95 per cent of home owners think that thegovernment should provide incentives toreduce their energy costs.

• 94 per cent of homeowners believe that thegovernment should encourage home-reno-vation through tax credits.

• 48 per cent of Ontario homeowners believethat home repairs/maintenance are thehardest parts of home ownership.

The survey was conducted by Ipsos Reidfor OREA’s Home Ownership Matters cam-paign. For more information visit www.home-ownershipmatters.ca.

OREA represents 50,000 brokers andsalespeople who are members of the 42 realestate boards throughout the province.Members of the association may use the“REALTOR®” trademark, which identifiesthem as real estate professionals who sub-scribe to a high standard of ethics and service.

The findings of the Ipsos Reid online pollconducted February 23 to March 2, 2011among 1,519 Ontario adults can be obtainedfrom Ipsos Reid at http://www.ipsos-na.com/news/. A survey with an unweightedprobability sample of this size and a 100%response rate would have a margin of error of+/- 2.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

From June 6, 2011, until March 31, 2012, homeowners are eligi-ble to receive grants of up to $5,000 to make their homes more energy-efficient.Homeowners who participated in the program to date have saved 20 percent ontheir energy bills.

There are two important changes to the program. First, there is a requirementfor participants to register directly with the program before booking their evalua-tion. Second, homeowners will now be required to provide receipts to their energyadvisor at the time of the post-retrofit evaluation to confirm eligibility for the grant.

How to apply:The first step in the renewed ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes program is to reg-

ister:• New participants - If you or a previous owner have not obtained an energy

evaluation of the property between April 1, 2007 and June 5, 2011.

• Past participants - Homeowners who participated in the program betweenApril 1, 2007 and June 5, 2011, and who did not receive the maximum amountof $5,000 can submit another application for improvements purchased andinstalled after June 6, 2011.

If you plan to apply for multiple properties, a form must be completed for eachone. If you are not sure which form to complete, follow the instructions on the reg-istration page.

Only products purchased on or after June 6, 2011, and installed after a pre-retrofit evaluation are eligible for an ecoENERGY grant. Funds are limited and allenergy retrofits and post-retrofit evaluations must be completed by March 31,2012. The homeowner must also sign the grant application by this date.

ecoENERGY Retrofit –Homes Program

Whether you're 18, 26, or 52, weall have to move out of our parent'shouse eventually. Recently a colleagueof mine moved out of her father'shouse for the first time at 25 years old,and asked me what I thought she need-ed to get. I started listing off some ofthe main things, and then began tomake her a list. I'll start with the basics:

A bed — Not a mattress on thefloor - you'd be surprised to see moldgrowing under the mattress a fewmonths later.

A nightstand — Get one bigenough to hold what you need-books, adrink, alarm clock, a lamp, even a lap-top if you're a workaholic or Facebookaddict.

Someplace to put your clothes —whether it be in the closet, hangingshelves, a dresser, an 18th centurycherry wood armoire, or in bins, youneed someplace to keep them tidy.

A laundry basket — yes, men,you do need one, if only for transporta-tion purposes.

A mirror — to make sure you'rejust as pretty as you think you are.

Something to sit on — a couch, asofa, a beanbag, an inflatable chair, justsomething comfortable. Remember, you can always get a slipcover to givean ugly couch a cute face.

A coffee table and/or side tables— Consider something with drawersfor remote control and magazine stor-age. We had two Ikea Lack side tablespushed together as a coffee table forwell over a year...a cheap and easy fixfor $14!

Something to put your TV on —It's helpful to have some media storageas well so you don't have stacks ofSeinfeld DVDs lying around.

Lighting — floor lamps, tablelamps, ceiling lights, assess what yourplace needs and make sure it's well lit.

Dining table and chairs — thesetoo can be found second hand, anddon't worry if the chairs don'tmatch...just call it "eclectic."

A desk and chair — this isoptional but useful to keep a computeror laptop on, your mail organized.

Optional pieces — bookshelves,an entry table/entry hooks or coat rackfor keys and jackets, shelves to hangfor either books, media, knickknacksor whatever you wish to display, rugsto cozy up a room and bring color, art-work or interesting accessories to dec-orate, curtains to keep out nosy neigh-bors, keep your place warmer in winterand cooler in summer, and cover thosehideous vertical blinds, and in thekitchen if you need more counter topand storage space, a microwave cart orbuffet is always useful.

Finally, here's a list of some thingsthat might get overlooked:

Trash cans — kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom.

Cleaning supplies — vacuum, broom, dust pan, mop, bucket, Windex, paper towels, anti-bacterial cleaner,

scrub brush or sponge, toilet bowlcleaner and brush, duster, towels(kitchen, bath, hand, washcloths, cleaning cloths, etc.)

Shower CurtainToilet bowl scrubber & plunger Iron & Ironing board — if you

care about your appearanceSmoke / Carbon Monoxide

Detectors & Fire extinguisher — soyour mother can sleep soundly

Tool Box — you can buy a basicset just about anywhere. Make sure youhave essentials like a hammer, flatheadand philips screwdriver, measuringtape, level, nails and screws, and don'tforget some duct tape!)

For some of the most essentialkitchen things, here's what I use mostin my kitchen:

CoffeemakerA good sized skillet with a lid that

you can make just about everything inA 1.5 qt. and/or 3 qt saucepan A stockpot with a lidMixing bowlsFor utensils: wooden spoon(s),

spatula, slotted spoon, slotted turner, ladle, can opener, bottle opener, andtongs.

Oven mittsGlass or ceramic baking dishesCookie/muffin sheetsCutting boardKnives--a large chef's knife, a ser-

rated knife, and a small utility knife foreverything else

Measuring cups & spoonsDon't forget toilet paper, either.

Remember, it may be a bit expen-sive right at the get-go but you canalways plead to family and friends forold furniture and dishes, go bargainhunting, and once you have your basicsetup continue to add décor (make sureyou have dishes before you get thatamazing hand painted urn) as time andmoney allow.

That should be enough to help yousurvive your first week without order-ing out every night.

Good luck and here's to independ-ence and living on your own!
