JUDGES’ BIOGRAPHIES 2015JOHAN BECERRA, PUERTO RIC0

Johan Becerra is a veterinarian owner of “BECLOVE KENNELS”. He is licensed by The Federación Canófila de Puerto Rico (FCPR) (member of the FCI) and certified to judge all breeds. As a canine judge, he has judged in numerous countries including Venezuela, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Spain, El Salvador, Guatemala, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Australia, Estonia, Latvia, South Africa, Puerto Rico and USA.

In 1980, he registered his first breed, Great Danes, and bred two litters. By 1986, he acquired his first Neapolitan Mastiff, which he bred and showed with great success. The Venezuelan Kennel Club awarded him his first medal as breeder of the year. He worked as a handler for several breeds including the breed that launched his career internationally, Basset Hounds. His passion for this breed originated during this time.

After finishing several champions for other kennels, he ventured into his own kennel and began actively breeding Basset Hounds. By 1992 he bred his first litter and since then he has continued, with much determination, the selection and exhibition of these dogs.

He has owned, bred and shown numerous dogs within the Basset Hound breed, under his international affix, “BECLOVE” . Many of these have become champions in Venezuela, Colombia, Costa Rica, Argentina, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the United States among other countries. Some of them are Best in Show, Best in Specialty Show and Group winners. He has won over 70 All Breed Best in Shows with his own dogs, Specialty Best in Shows and many group first and placements. He has also bred and own several world champions and international champions.

SHIRLEY BELL, ONTARIO, CANADA

I have been involved in the world of purebred dogs for 40 years. My first purebred dog was a Basset Hound. Next came Boxers, and now, along with the Boxers, we co-own a Boston Terrier.

I am a life member of the Boxer Club of Canada Inc. and the Canadian Kennel Club Inc. as well as my own local All Breed Club (Nipissing Kennel Club Inc). I am also one of the founding members of the Northern Ontario Boxer Club and a long time member of the American Boxer Club Inc.

I created the PowerPoint Presentation “Judging the Boxer”. This presentation is approved by the Boxer Club of Canada Inc. and used for judges’ education. I have judged large Boxer Specialties in Canada, US, Australia, Mexico, the Philippines and Argentina

ROBERTA CAMPBELL, FLORIDA, USA

Roberta Campbell lives in Ocala, Florida . She has judged multiple times in Europe, Columbia, Australia and New Zealand as well as in the US, Canada and Alaska. She is approved for all Hounds, Terriers and Herding breeds.

Roberta is the Vice-President, past President and Show Chair of the Greater Ocala Dog Club. She is the founder of “Unique Birders”, a life member of the West Highland White Terrier Club of America, a long-time member of the Cairn Terrier Club of America and the Airedale Terrier Club of America. She shares her home with an ancient Australian Shepherd and assorted, appreciative cats which used to be strays.

Judging assignments are now kept at two weekends a month because of the misery of travel - mostly the airlines. Her goal is to bring honesty, civility and depth of knowledge to each assignment. Judging is a continuous learning experience

CAROLYN CEDERMAN, NEW ZEALAND

I started my involvement in the dog world with my first Irish Setter in 1973. I have continued to breed and successfully show Irish Setters for the past 40 years under the Lanascol prefix - now having seven NZ Grand Champions. Over the years I have also imported a number of Irish Setters to help with my breeding program.

For 15 years I was involved with breeding and exhibiting Labrador Retrievers alongside the Irish Setters. I have also owned and exhibited American Cockers. For the past 19 years I have been involved with breeding and exhibiting Pointers with my husband. I owned on Basset Hound for a number of years. We are now owned by a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen.

I have been judging since 1985 and am now an All Breed judge. I have had many judging assignments in New Zealand including the NZ National Dog Show in 2003. I have also judged in Australia, Sweden, the USA and India.

DANA CLINE, ILLINOIS, USA

In the late 1960’s, Dana Cline’s parents gave him his first Great Dane and from that moment he knew that he would have a lifetime of involvement with this breed and with dogs.

Breeding has always been a favorite aspect of this sport for Mr. Cline. He has bred nearly 80 champions in a number of breeds, primarily Great Danes, but also Borzoi, German Wirehaired Pointers, Miniature Bull Terriers and Beagles. He was a long time member of the Great Dane Club of America.

He is licensed to judge Sporting, Hounds, Working, Toys and Herding Groups as well as various other breeds. He has judged in a number of foreign countries and at the Great Dane Club of America National Specialty, as well as many of the top shows in the US.

RHONDA DAVIS, OHIO, USA

I started my life in dogs at the age of five with a Wire Fox Terrier. (I call this baptism by fire into the world of terriers.) In the early 70s I purchased my first Airedale and consider the Airedale to be my breed of choice and my real passion. I have also owned, shown and bred Welsh Terriers, and now live with a 15 year old Dandie Dinmont Terrier. My judging career started in 1987 at which point I stopped breeding dogs. I have judged in Argentina, Australia, Canada, England, Sweden and at Montgomery County. Having a real love for the Terrier has made me a bit of one myself!

MICHAEL J. DOUGHERTY, CALIFORNIA, USA

Michael J. Dougherty started with his family in purebred dogs in 1961, acquiring his first Whippet in 1963. By 1974 he was approved by the American Kennel Club for a limited handler’s license, attaining all-breed status in 1977 - teaming with his father, Jack Dougherty. While concentrating on handling he also bred and owned, with his family, Miniature Schnauzers, Smooth Fox Terriers, and Keeshonden, as well as Whippets. As a professional handler, he guided the careers of many top winning dogs, including Best in Show winning Whippets and Bichon Frise. His handling focused mainly on breeds in the Hound, Terrier, Non Sporting, and Toy Groups, but also included many breeds in the other three groups.

In 1985 Dougherty retired from professional handling to pursue a dog judging avocation, again following in his father’s footsteps. He is currently approved by the AKC to judge Best in Show, the Hound Group, the Terrier Group, Manchester Terriers (Toy), Bichon Frises, Boston Terriers, Dalmatians, French Bulldogs, Keeshonden, Lhasa Apsos, Poodles, and Tibetan Terriers, plus Miscellaneous Classes and Junior Showmanship. He has judged at shows across the United States most notably Westminster (including Best in Show in 2013) and Montgomery County (including Best in Show in 2007). His international judging assignments have taken him to Australia, Taiwan, Colombia, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Finland, Canada, Mexico, and Japan.

JOAN GOLDSTEIN, NEW JERSEY, USA

With my late husband, Bob, I became involved with Sighthounds over 40 years ago. We acquired our first Greyhound on our Honeymoon, and in 1967 we bought our first show Whippet. Since that time, we have bred and owned some very special BIS and Specialty winning Whippets and Greyhounds under the kennel name, Gold-Dust.

In 1990, I received A.K.C. approval to judge Whippets, Greyhounds and Junior Handling. I am now approved for the Hound Group, Toy Group, Non-Sporting Group, Doberman Pinschers, and Siberian Huskies. I am also approved for Best In Show.

It was an honor to have judged two American Whippet Club Specialties (East and West), and in April of 2000, the American Whippet Club’s Millennium National Specialty with an entry of almost 700. I have judged the Canadian Whippet National as well. My resume also includes the Greyhound Club of America Specialty as well as many other Hound Specialties and Hound Group Shows. I have judged a number of Toy Specialties as well as Toy Group Shows. I have had the privilege of judging the AKC/Eukanuba Invitational twice, including the Hound Group at the 2006 Tampa show. Another judging highlight was judging Whippets, Greyhounds and Afghans at Westminster K.C. in 2002. I have judged in many foreign countries including a number of times in Sweden (World Show 2008, Stockholm), Australia, Ireland, Canada, Colombia, Norway, as well as Osaka and Tokyo in Japan.

It is an honor to come back and judge once again in your country

GORDON HAYBURN, ONTARIO, CANADA

Although my family has had dogs for as long as I can remember, I first registered my own dog with the UK Kennel Club in 1990. I have owned and shown the following breeds: English Setter, Irish Red and White Setter, Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever.

I first started judging in the UK in 1997 and am approved by the United Kingdom Kennel Club to award Challenge Certificates. I moved to Canada, from the UK, in February 2011 and in 2013 applied for a judging permit from the Canadian Kennel Club. I am now licensed for about 50% and have a permit for the balance of the Sporting Group breeds.

Whilst in the UK, I held various committee positions with the English Setter Society of Scotland, the Golden Retriever Club of Wales and the English Setter Society of Wales. I was also the Chairman of the Irish Red and White Setter Club of Great Britain.

I believe judging carries great responsibilities and consider it an honor and a privilege to be invited to judge. I find it especially pleasing to be considered worthy to judge the National Specialties of two of my own breeds, having judged both these breeds many times in the UK and look forward to seeing some lovely exhibits and know that I will thoroughly enjoy my day in the company of lovely dogs and the people they own.

ANN D. HEARN, GEORGIA, USA

Ann Hearn has been involved in the sport of pure-bred dogs since 1952 beginning with Fox Terriers and then non sporting breeds, Bichons in particular. She now has a “shave and bath” breed – Miniature Pinschers. She has bred Best in Show, Group and BISS winners and has finished many Champions and Grand Champion Bichons, Fox Terriers and MinPins, in addition to many other breeds for other people from Great Pyrenees to Maltese as a handler.

Ann has been an AKC judge since 1984 and judges all over the World. She spent a month in Australia judging in Melbourne, Sidney, and the beautiful coastal areas. She has also judged in Canada, Russia, Italy, Sweden, Finland, France, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, China, and South Africa. Ann has been an executive committee member of the Bichon Frise Club of America, Greater

Atlanta Fox Terrier Club, Atlanta Kennel Club, Sawnee Mountain Kennel Club, Lawrenceville Kennel Club and Kennesaw Kennel Club. She is a member of Judges Association of Georgia, Dog Judges Association of America, Senior Conformation Judges Association and American Dog Show Judges. She is also an all-breed judge for the United Kennel Club and International Canine Events, an International Registry.

Ann Hearn thoroughly enjoys judging. She says she can legitimately get her hands on as many dogs as she likes - and she likes them all! Having the honor of judging for Erie Shores Kennel Club in Canada is a delight to which she looks forward

BETTY REGINA LEININGER, TEXAS, USA

Betty was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Her interest in pure-bred dogs began at a very early age, with the breeding and exhibiting of German Shepherd dogs. Betty was a co-founder of the Newfoundland All-Breed Kennel Club in St. John’s in the early 1960s.

After moving to the United States in 1970, Betty married and enjoyed a successful career as an AKC Professional Handler, guiding the show careers of many top-winning dogs. Betty exhibited in approximately 100 shows annually and was recognized for her professionalism and competitive spirit. Betty has been an active international judge with many assignments abroad including Taiwan, Beijing, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Trinidad, Columbia, El Salvador and her native Canada. In April of 2004 she was honored to judge at the World Show in Rio de Janeiro and again at the World Show in Mexico City in May, 2007.

Ms. Leininger was privileged to judge at the AKC Eukanuba Dog Classic in December of 2003 in Long Beach, California, and she has had the great honor of judging at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog show on six occasions, including the Non Sporting Group in 2004, the Working Group in 2012 and Best In Show for the 138th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in 2014.

Ms. Leininger is currently approved to judge all Working, Toy and Non-Sporting groups, Pointers and Whippets, all Miscellaneous and Best in Show

PAUL ROBINSON, NEW ZEALAND

I have bred owned and shown pointers since 1980. When I was a boy I first came to know the Pointer as my father owned a Pointer as a hunting dog. We would frequently spend a day out shooting together. I acquired my first show Pointer in 1980 and since that time I have had a close association with the Breed. During this time I have bred and owned many wonderful Pointers and have bred or owned 14 different “All Breed” Best in Show winners including the BIS at the only Pointer National to be held in Australia, which occurred in 1988. I co-bred the BIS winner of the New Zealand National Dog Show in 2005 with this dog going on to the UK where he won BOB and Group 3 at Cruft’s in 2007. He also won BIS at National Gundog in the UK in 2008. During his UK campaign he gained 20 CC’s and has produced many Show Champions in the UK. I bred both the father and mother of the #1 dog of All Breeds in NZ Dogzonline in 2010 and also bred and handled the BOB winning Pointer at Crufts in 2012, from the breed’s record entry of 256 Pointers. That year he also won Gundog Group 4. Prior to arriving in the UK where he now resides he won the New Zealand “All Breeds” Puppy of the Year in 2006 and then the Premier “All Breeds” Dog of the Year contest in 2010. This Pointer is the only dog in the breed’s history to hold Grand Champion status in both NZ and Australia and also Ch status in the UK.

I began my judging career whilst living in Queensland, Australia where I sat and passed examinations to judge Gundogs, Toys and Hounds at Open show level after initially being appointed to the Gundog panel in 1993. I returned to New Zealand from Australia in 1996 and sat and passed my New Zealand Gundog Championship license in 2006 after 19 years of judging

experience. I am licensed to judge all Gundog Breeds and in 2011 I was approved to judge all Hound breeds. I have had the pleasure of judging the Gundog and Hound Groups on several occasions within New Zealand, in several states of Australia and on both coasts of the United States. I recently returned to the USA to complete my 10th judging appointment in that country where I judged the Pointer Club of Southern California Championship in April 2012. I have also judged the Labrador Club of Queensland Specialty show in Australia and I have judged the Hudson River English Setter Specialty in New York City, USA.

BILL SAHLOFF, OHIO, USA

Bill started in 1965 with Great Danes and throughout his dog career has had many other breeds. Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Beagles have been two breeds that he has actively bred most recently. In the 1970’s Bill was a licensed AKC Handler for the Working Group. He was a member of PHA, DHG, and an AKC Registered Handler at the end of his handling career. He retired from handling in 2006, and started judging shortly after. He currently is licensed for BIS, Working Group, more than half of the Hound Group and a few other breeds. He is also licensed for Junior Showmanship and enjoys working with children since he is a retired elementary school teacher of 25 years.

During his handling career he handled several Borzois to their championships.

BETTY-ANNE STENMARK, CALIFORNIA, USA

Betty-Anne Stenmark grew up in British Columbia with an English Cocker and later an American Cocker as pets. As a young woman she bred and showed Saint Bernards, fancied Salukis but for the last 38 years it’s been Dandie Dinmont Terriers, and is still breeding today under the King’s Mtn. prefix.

Betty-Anne Stenmark is the long-time show chairman of Del Valle Dog Club, and a founding member of Skyline Dog Fanciers, an all breed club that combined with Del Valle to become the Harvest Moon Classic. She is the co-founder of Responsible Dog Breeders of San Mateo County, a group that in 1990 successfully fought the first animal rights’ inspired anti-breeding legislation. She is the past President of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club of America, and a long time member of the AKC Trial Board.

Betty-Anne began judging Saint Bernards at age 32 and is now approved for the Sporting, Hound and Terrier groups, as well as 11 working breeds and both Corgis. In 2011 she was awarded the prestigious Winkie for Annual Achievement, voted Judge of the Year. She judged the Hound Group at Westminster Kennel Club in February 2015, having previously judged the Hound Group in 1998 and the Terrier Group in 2008.

OBEDIENCE JUDGES

CHERYL BISHOP, ONTARIO, CANADA

Thank you very much for inviting me to be part of this year’s judging panel. I began dog training in 1983 when I became interested in having a great family pet. It was not long afterwards that my focus also took me to obedience competitions. Over the years, I have competed in both Canada and the U.S. obtaining obedience and rally titles on my dogs. I have also enjoyed competing in both agility and flyball.

My family consists of my four dogs. The youngest is “Colten” my GSD with a personality that makes me laugh and smile every day. Next is my Sheltie “Poseidon” who loves to work and play. Next in line is “Knockout” my Golden who is happiest when holding 3 tennis balls at one time. TED LESLIE, ONTARIO, CANADA

Ted has been a licensed Obedience judge since 2002 and also judges Rally. He has been involved in Obedience since 1979, trialling first with boxers and then with border collies. He has extensive Flyball experience as well. He is a retired teacher with thirty-five years in the classroom.

Ted is married to Sheila, who also trials in Obedience. They live in Hamilton, Ontario and are active members of the Hamilton Dog Obedience Club.

DELVYN (DEL) LUNN, ONTARIO, CANADA

Del Lunn became involved in dog training in 1978. The first dog I trained was a German Shepherd. The training and exhibiting of this dog led to a career of over thirty five years in dog training. In 1980 I purchased my first Golden Retriever from Meadowpond Goldens in Michigan. I have bred a number of litters over the years under the prefix “Goldunn”. I have trained my dogs through many obedience titles over the years and numerous titles with the American Kennel Club. I have also trialed my dogs through Rally titles.

I am currently exhibiting two dogs. I am actively involved as an obedience training instructor at two facilities. In January 1999 I became a licensed obedience judge and in 2007 a Rally judge. I find judging another level of training where the experience is invaluable.

I have been fortunate to have judged obedience U.S, Puerto Rico, Bermuda and across Canada. I am president of the Canadian Association of Obedience Trial Judges, a life member of the Canadian Kennel Club and a member of the Golden Retriever Club of Canada

LESLIE MARSHALL, ONTARIO, CANADALeslie’s first experience with formal obedience training was in 1986, with a Wire-haired Fox Terrier, earning a Can/Am CD. Wanting a small, non-shedding dog that was a little more willing to please, she obtained her first Miniature Schnauzer in 1987

Leslie has been breeding Miniature Schnauzers, under the Marwyn prefix, since 1991. She shows her dogs in conformation, obedience, rally and agility, and has earned many HIT’s and breed/group rankings along the way in each discipline. Leslie has also trained a Doberman to a CD, and a Golden Retriever to an AM UD.

An obedience judge since 2008, Leslie also judges rally not only in Canada, but in the US and Bermuda as well. As a Registered Veterinary Technician who still works occasionally in clinical practice, Leslie recently started her own business, The Puppy Tutor
