James T. OrisAssociate Provost for Research & Scholarship

Associate Provost’s PerspectiveJust like rubbing the heads of the turtles on the Tri Delt sundial, avoiding the university seal while crossing through the Hub, and kissing under the Upham arch, research, scholarship, and creative activity are strong traditions at Miami University. But while those other traditions are free, research, scholarship, and creative activity are not. These are made possible by funding awarded to the university by federal, state, and private agencies. This support totaled $18.8 million in FY2015. In a funding environment as challenging as the one we currently face, this level of success owes entirely to the dedication of the faculty and staff who work tirelessly to secure funding for their projects. For many faculty, a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education is a key motivator. External funding enables faculty to engage students in authentic, real-world projects. It’s a tradition they share with more than 2000 undergraduates and more than 1000 graduate students each year. The strong connection among faculty, graduate, and undergraduate research creates an exceptional learning environment that is one of the hallmarks of the Miami Experience. No wonder Miami’s masters and doctoral graduates are

highly sought in all sectors and Miami is consistently ranked among the best institutions for undergraduate teaching by US News & World Report. We remain proud of the faculty, staff, and students whose work contributes to Miami University’s tradition of combining strong liberal education with outstanding research and scholarly activities. And we remain dedicated to supporting our researchers, scholars, and creative artists with effective strategies for finding and securing funding for the important work they do.

In total, Miami University’s external funding hit $18.8M in FY2015. A decrease in Federal funding was mostly offset by funding from associations, foundations, and other non-profit organizations. Private funding more than doubled from FY2014 ($1.6M) to FY2015 ($3.8M). The College of Arts and Science, which traditionally brings in the most Federal money, generated 55% of this year’s overall funding for a total of $10.3M. Increases in funding were seen by the College of Creative Arts, the Farmer School of Business, and the College of Education, Health, and Society.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTSIdeas. Vision. Passion. Our faculty have it all, and they use it to break ground, spark insight, and solve problems. Here we show-case just a few of the projects Miami faculty worked on in FY2015.

CrowdfundingOnce the domain of musicians, filmmakers, and tech innovators, crowdfunding is beginning to capture the attention of scientific researchers like Andor Kiss, adjunct assistant professor and supervisor in Miami University’s Center for Bioinformatics & Functional Genomics (CBFG). Kiss conducted a successful crowdfunding campaign in 2014 through the website Experiment. Miami University’s Associate Provost for Research & Scholarship, Jim Oris, anticipates crowdfunding will play an increasingly important role for scientists, innovators, and creators at universities. To facilitate grassroots investment at

Undergraduate zoology major Matt Deer co-authored a paper with graduate student Aminata Coulibaly and biology professor Lori Isaacson that was published as a cover article in the presti-gious journal Brain Research.

Distinguished professor of chemistry and biochemistry Stacey Lowery-Bretz received more than $1 million from the NSF to support development of assessments to improve chemistry education.

Supported by awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Philosophical Society, associate professor of art history Andrew Casper used the Shroud of Turin to explore historical conceptions of artifice and authenticity.

College of Education, Health, and Society faculty Susan Mosley-Howard and Kate Rousmaniere continued work with the Myaamia Center to study the effect of self-identity on the college success of Native students.

Miami, Oris is leading the development of a new crowdfunding platform that will be available beginning in 2016. Called HawksNest, the system will engage Miami alumni, family, and friends from around the world, allowing them to have a meaningful and measureable impact on work happening at Miami today.

Office of Research for UndergraduatesThe 2014-2015 academic year was the first full year of operation for the newly established Office of Research for Undergraduates (ORU). Chair of the Miami University Board of Trustees Sharon Mitchell and university president David Hodge officially cut the ribbon to open the ORU on September 18, 2014. Under the direction of Joseph Johnson, the ORU is dedicated solely to coordinating and progressing undergraduate research. It facilitates research activity by undergraduates across campus and markets programs to current and prospective students.

The Humanities Center, led by director Tim Melley, was one of just 16 organizations awarded a challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2015. The award will help ensure the Center’s long-term viability.

Undergraduate students in management professor Josh Schwarz’s human capital metrics class analyzed data that helped international company Alcoa find a path to reducing employee turnover.

Assistant professor of history Tatiana Seijas was a fellow at Brown University’s John Carter Brown Library, where she researched the Indian Camino Real, a North American trade route that dates to the pre- Columbian era.

Bob Setlock, a faculty member in the College of Engineering and Computing, continued the long-running Project High Flight, an interdisciplinary endeavor to develop a remote-controlled, high altitude balloon to fly missions to the edge of space.
