Alien Youth News Hope your summer is going great! Alien Youth has been super busy doing our annual Week of Service in June, and we also held a BBQ Lunch Fundraiser on the July 4th weekend. We also have been to Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and DisneyQuest. Our kids have been quite active not only in our community, but at fun events as well! We have a lot going on for the remainder of the year, including some updates to our

youth room, and various events and outreaches that we want to do and participate in. Keep Alien Youth in your prayers that we will continue to be a shining light in this world, and that our kids will positively impact those that they come into contact with. Blessings, Joshua Hosseinzadeh Director of Youth Ministries

Boy Scout Troop 145 would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came out and supported our recent Spaghetti Luncheon. We were able to raise enough money to get the really nice graphics work done on our trailer and we got it done in time for summer camp! Thank you not only for supporting us at this fundraising event, but for your continued support of our Troop since becoming a part of the Oakland Presbyterian Church family!

Young Christian Musicians Band

Committed to the education and development of young Christian musicians, the YCM Band program will resume at OPC on August 14, 2013. The focus of the program is to provide opportunity for young people to develop musical skills and experience playing and performing in a Christian atmosphere. Classes are available for Beginning and Intermediate Band students.

AUGUST 2013 3 The Oakleaf

From the Pastor In the wake of the George Zimmerman verdict, I have done a lot of thinking about our society. Whether you agreed with the jury or not, it was a tragic situation with no winners. A young man lost his life, and another man will spend the rest of his life wondering if he did the right thing when he accosted the young man. He may also face legal battles for years to come. The lives of many people have been negatively affected in a great way. What went wrong? What led to this tragic event? It’s a complicated issue. One could point to our “gun” culture as part of the problem. I don’t own a gun, but I’m not sure I would want to be forbidden to purchase one if I felt I needed it to protect my family. According to CNN, there are over 300 million non-military

guns in America. Over 11,000 people are killed each year by gunfire. Those are horrible numbers for a nation that is considered to be a great civilization. One could point to the crimes that provided the background for the decision of Mr. Zimmerman to patrol his neighborhood. If people felt safe, they wouldn’t feel the need to buy a gun, or to get in their car and drive around looking for suspicious characters. One could point to specific laws that may need to be changed. Was this a case of “stand your ground?” And if so, does this event point to a need to amend the law or revoke it? And should anyone have the right and authority to patrol their neighborhood with a gun with the purpose of confronting people they don’t know? I, for one, don’t want that happening in my neighbor-hood. Once the police were notified, that should have been the end of it—and we wouldn’t be mourning the loss of a young man or taking sides in the case. I know it may sound like a simplistic solution, but long ago Jesus taught us to treat other people the way we want to be treated—the golden rule. If that had been the operating principle in Sanford that night, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. Wrestling with some serious questions,

Pastor Bob

The Preschool is anticipating an exhilarating new school year! Exciting changes were made over the summer and we are eager to share them. We have enhanced and increased the offerings in our program. For two year old children, we now offer a two, three, or five day school week. For all the children enrolled in our preschool, we have extended our program until 5:30pm! We still have openings for children ages 2-4, so please share the news of our exceptional Christian preschool! Looking ahead to the upcoming holiday season, our preschool will be holding a Yankee Candle fundraiser from August 27th through September 17th. The sale of these excellent products will benefit our school and enable you to do some early Christmas shopping as well! Thank you for your continued support. Laurie Templin Preschool Director
