19 dirough May 11 are cancelled withpreviews resuming on May 12. The latestofficial opening date is nowjune 14.

The "hiatus"—which eliminates Spider-Man from 2011 Tony contentíon—willbríng in a new creatíve team to reshapethe show. As stated in the press releaseon the subject, ".. .director and co-bookwriter Julie Taymor will no longercontinue in her day-to-day duties with theproduction." Taking over the staging isPhilip William McKinley (who directedThe Boy From Oz), while tackling the bookis Marvel Comics alum Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. (Unquestionably, his SensationalSpider-Mm for Marvel had something todo widi his recruitment. His other writingcredits include HBO's Big Lave and It's aBird... It's a Plane ... h 's Supetman.)

A different sort of bombshell wasdropped at die recently recast La Cagecnix Folies. After a handful of previewsand extensive media promotion, it wasannomiced that Jeffrey Tambor (TbeLany Sanders Show, Arrested Developfftettt)was experiencing complications from hipsurgery and would be stepping down fromthe role of Georges (vacated in Febru-ary by Kelsey Grammer). Fortunately,Broadway actor Christopher Sieber(Lord Farquaad in Shrek; Sir Dennis Gal-lahad in Spamaht) was able to take on .therole within weeks of Tambor's departure, ensuring diat his significant other in dieshow—Harvey Fierstein as Albin—would have a dashing new "With You onMy Arm" duet partner before sunset onthe Frendi Riviera. (P.S. A delicious blastfrom the past, Alyce Beasley, known forplaying receptionist Agnes Dipesto onMoonlighting, plays Mme. Dindon/Mme.Renaud in die hit musical.)

Meanwhile, celebrity iiewcomers areturning in some of die season's mostmemorable performances. Comedian/ac-

tor Jim Gaffigan and Kiefer Sutherlandof 24 fame are having no problem keepingup widi their veteran costars Brian Cox,Chris Noth and Jason Patric in thepotent revival of That ChampionshipSeason. Sudierland's focused portrayal ofJames is especial!}? mesmerizing.

Also on Broadway's newbie radar areRobin Williams in Bengal Tiger at theBaghdaã Zoo and Chris Rock, who isstarring alongside Bobby Cannavale andAnnabella Sciorra in Tbe Motherf**ckerWith the Hat.

And finally, in die catch-it-before-it-closes category, American Idiot, one ofthe most groundbreaking and electrifyingshows in town, hás posted a closing dateof April 24. In die final analysis, widi itsGreen Day music and edgy storyline, thisrock musical shouid have had a shelf lifefar longer dian its one year-plus. Person-ally, Fm checking it out again before itexits die St. James.

Ifs a Comedy! lt's a Musical! it's an Awards Show! It's Improv!lt's... Braadway's Next H!T Musical

In an era when the public simply cannot get its fillof the glitz, the glamour, the verbal faux pás and therandom bursts of hilarity that come together to createan awards show, it's nice to know that New York isdoing its part to provide this thrill to folks like us onThursday nights (through April 21).

Ifs impossible for me to spoil this glorious eveningof improv, ad libs and loopy musical numbers, basi-cally because the show l saw is not the show you'11 beseeing, but l can give you the formal and performers. The First Act (granted, this is a bit of a mísnomer sincethere is no offidal intermission) is an awards ceremonyspotlighting four nominees for "Best Musical" (created from audience-submitted song titles—ali of them sillyand/or risque. The "Phony" is the coveted trophy presented to the winner based on audience appiause). TheSecond Act is a madcap presentation of the entire "Phony Winning Musical."

Hosting the show is Gregg Triggs (someone shouid sign him for the Tonys.. .really) with a cast made upof five improvisational prós (from a pool of eight). There is also a NYC celebrity co-host to spice thíngs up andthe amazing Gary Adler (co-author of Altar Boyzanú musical director of The Radio City Christmas Spectacu-lai) at the piano.

Check it out—before April 21st—atThe Triad.

; TASTE OF THE TOWI\ ]

The Stadium Grill at Bowimor Lanes:A Tasty Experience in Times Square

Bowimor Lanes on 44th Street, just offTimes Square, is a delicious surprise. Theyare not your grandfather's bowling lanes—instead, Bowimor is a 90,000-sq.-ft.,45-lane colossus. The lanes are themed, and the space includes Warhol-inspiredartwork, a Prohibition-themed lounge, aBrooklyn Bridge-inspired stairway, andantique items from what was Tavern ondie Green.

Most notable of ali for this particularspace is the Stadium Grill Sports Bar andRestaurant. A restaurant and bar, believe itor not, that is presided over by none otherthan David Burke, the critically acclaimed, internationally recognized chef who runsrestaurants at Foxwoods Casino as well asin Chicago, Lãs Vegas, Rumson, New Jer-sey and New York City. And what's DavidBurke doing in a place like this? Turn-ing out always fresh, and exciting, uniquedishes. And the same hip, young crowd thatbowls also patronizes the noisy, bustlingStadium Grill and Sports Bar with its 29wrap-around televisions.

And if such facilities are not the ories youremember from your youth, neither is themenu, which is dotted with Mr. Burke'swhimsical creations. A complimentaryamuse of oxtail onion soup with a diinporous cap of Gruyère cheese was as gooda version of this preparation as IVe ever

tasted. It was followed by a fat, cornbread-cnisted crab cake on a bed of corn relishand chipotle aioli, ten plump Chinesechicken wings with a snappy Asian dippingsauce, a too-big-to-eat whole leaf Caesarsalad speckled with molten brie croutons, and crisp calamari accompanied by a sweetand spicy peanut sauce.

The main courses included: grilled yel-low fin tuna with a vegetable mango surn-mer roll plate mate; a rock shrirnp choppedsalad; and a Millionaires meatloaf.

Every one of the four desserts sampledwas a home run. There's no better hotfudge sundae around than the one servedhere. The David Burke babycakes provedto be a silken, chocolate mousse-like con-coction anchored with a thin layer of cakeand topped with chocolate flecked whippedcream. Warm drunken doughnuts featuredsqueeze bordes of Bailey's milk chocolate, strawberry daiquiri and salted rum caramel.

Every portion is huge. They are nodoubt influenced by the fact—as our excel-lent waiter, Jeremy, confided to us—diatprofessional athletes, including the NewYork Jets, often eat here. And why not?
