But, before why, what and how we have to ask:

Who are we?



Following leads… in some answers from the survey…

… we'd have to ask if it would be possible...At the moment I don't know what to sayI don't knowI don't know if it possible but it is very interestingI don't think for the moment…our cataloguing software wouldn't allow …It's not in our level (the EDC) that such a decision can be takenNot clear how this would work as we could not distinguish EU related material …Nous n'avons pas encore envisagé cette question……I don't have the authority …We are too small to share our collection…We don't have capacity to do it

So, who are we?...

And are we now crucial for our academic institutions? Are we crucial, as physical space, to EU learning and research? Are we still visible in our host structure?

Maybe ECLAS can help us to reinvent the EDC of the 21st century.










Main results (126 responses): Quite a significant number of the respondents would be interested in collaborating with the European Commission Central Library: 62 EDCs (49%) would be kind to share it’s database, academic research papers or repository with ECLAS.





Forty-five EDC’s mentioned, mainly under “other”, that at the moment they are not sure how to answer this question (see top row). In addition, technical difficulties were mentioned such as: “If there were a handy technical solution I suppose the library´s directorate would agree to link to our local catalogue, in which the EDC collection is integrated”; and “more information is needed on the proposal and technical requirements for us to give an answer”.





Further, for the Italian EDC’s, the decision should be taken by the whole network: “the decision must be made by the EDC’s Italian network because it is a network project”. Finally, two EDC’s said they would need more information: “We would like to have some more information and details about ECLAS and how it works”. This should be investigated further if 62 EDC’s is a critical mass required for the EC to start such collaboration.

4. EDC’s need to look for new profile of users: the profile of users of the 21 st century.
