I want to share some early details about an exciting new 2012 collegiate event being sponsored by the Army Marksmanship Unit.

The inaugural Army Strong Collegiate Shooting Championships (ASCSC) are slated for Mar. 13-18, 2012 at Fort Benning, GA. According to LtCol Dan Hodne, AMU Commander, this event is on course to becoming the biggest multiple-discipline, shoulder-to-shoulder gathering of collegiate and junior shooters in the history of competitive shooting.

In what is intended to become an annual event, the dynamic format will draw the top college and junior shooters from four distinct championships: the NRA Intercollegiate Pistol Championships, the NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championship, the Scholastic Steel Challenge Collegiate Championship and the Scholastic Clay Target Program Challenge.

Several world-class championships have been held on the ranges of the AMU in the past few years, including two International Shooting Sports Federation World Cups (this past year’s event being the largest international shooting sports event to ever take place in North America), USA Shooting National Rifle and Pistol Championships, the annual U.S. Small Arms Championships and many JROTC, collegiate and regional championships.

The ASCSC aligns directly with the youth and collegiate shooting programs of the NRA Competitive Shooting Division, SSC and SCTP, which all foster junior and collegiate participation in prestigious competitions, while promoting safety.

The inaugural ASCSC will be sandwiched around the thrilling Army Strong Experience, hosted by the Maneuver Center of Excellence, on Mar. 15-16. This event showcases demonstrations by an array of units including the “Rangers in Action” demo, the Hands-on Training Exercise (HOTEX) of the Army’s mechanized and armored forces, the “Airborne 5000” demonstration, Fort Benning’s Silver Wings Skydiving exhibition, as well as shooting demonstrations performed by members of the AMU Shotgun Team.

To learn more about how you or your collegiate shooters can participate, visit www.usamu.com and check back periodically for updates as the event draws closer. You may also contact Tori Croft, National Manager, Collegiate & Schools Program, at [email protected].

Top shooters I’ve spoken with have earned their clas-sifi cation the old fashioned way—through hard work. While one champion I

new riverbed for a centuries-old river, it takes time. No websites. No gizmos.

Shooters with high expectations for accuracy need a strongly programmed logic circuit that rationalizes: “It is more important that my eye initi-ate a smooth trigger squeeze at the moment things look right, than for my conscious brain to topple the fi rst domino in a much slower sequence of see-anticipate-pull.” Like training your eye not to blink when the rock hits the windshield, it takes a ridiculous amount of repetition.

I thought I could return to com-petitive shooting after a 35-year layoff like riding a bike. The know-ledge was there, ready to be dusted off. But my “shooting circuits” that were bulldozed back in the 1970s had been reclaimed by the centuries-old river of fi ght or fl ight; to fl inch from a loud noise. Through a stub-born mind-over-matter approach, I was able to muscle my lizard brain into submission, but only occasionally. With the slightest distraction, my instinctive brain would wiggle out from my strong hold and win the wrestling match—meaning I shot poorly.

So, with tail somewhat between my legs, I have resigned to becom-ing “knee deep in brass” until my rehearsed logic circuit is stronger than my lizard brain’s concern over muzzle blast. Now, where is a good place to set-up my reloading bench?

After all, confi dence in our equipment is a good thing. My weakness is late at night, staring at a website that offers a trigger, sight or ammunition that will expedite my ascent on Mt. Everest, a place I very much want to visit. So

here’s an infomercial—not for an accuracy pill, but for an attitude that will help us to shoot better.

In a recent discussion with some-one who has “walked the walk” in competitive shooting sports, I was reminded of something I teach, but haven’t used in my own plans for better shooting. What I had known, but paid too little attention to recently, was this: To override a million years of what evolution has taught us about loud noises that are 20 inches from our face, we need to repeat (practice) the desired actions of a consistent hold and trigger squeeze until THAT mess-age is louder than what is being shouted by our evolutionary “lizard brain.” Like bulldozing a

A nice, dry, breezy weekend in Marble Falls, TX, was the scene of the Texas State Rifle Association’s Smallbore Prone Championship. The championship is a 320-shot match fired over two days to include: A Dewar (50- and 100-yard match), 100-yard match, 50-meter match and a 50-yard match. Saturday’s metallic sight match saw Katie Bridges shoot a 1591-93X to take the lead with Ordie Jones in second with a 1586-94X.

The any sight match saw Katie hold her lead with a 1597-122X.

Unseasonably cold weather, rain and wind kept the fair weather shooters away, but the diehards still had fun shooting. Although smallbore rifle isn’t typically known as a spectator sport, it rained so hard at times that the range safety officer and parents could see the rooster tails of the bullets as they traveled down range! In spite of the weather, the scores were respectable, the food was great and the memories will last.

The rain held off just long enough for shooters over Memorial Day Weekend, making the championship a big success. With the largest participation we’ve had in the last five years, the match continues to attract new shooters as well as bring back old ones. Ed Hall of Tupper Lake, NY, was the overall winner for the third year in a row. He improved his score from last year by six points and finished with a total of 2614-109X. Ralph Young of Castleton, VT, became the new Vermont Outdoor Champion with a score of 2582-75X. This feat is impressive considering Ralph just spent a year-long deployment in Afghanistan and returned home less than six months ago. We’d like to thank everyone who participated in this match for a job well done.

PHIL: Well, did you enjoy shooting this year?

SSUSA: I sure did. We have the best jobs in the world, don’t we?

PHIL: Yes we do.

SSUSA: With a couple weeks to refl ect since your Camp Perry win, how does it feel as the 10-time

After his BlackBerry stopped ringing o -the-wall with congratulatory messages, Phil Hemphill returned our call and spoke with Shooting Sports USA about the 27-year journey to this year’s Camp Perry win, some of the methods he uses and future plans with his grandchildren.

National PPC Champion to also be the National Conventional Pistol Champion?

PHIL: You know it really sunk in when I got back home and I was surfi ng the Internet to see the results. When I saw my picture and the caption that I was the 2011 National Pistol Champion, that’s when it hit.

SSUSA: You started competingduring highway patrol school, right?

PHIL: Yeah, that’s how the PPC started for me. When I came through highway patrol class back in 1980, I wasn’t the top shooter because most of the kids in my class came from rural backgrounds and grew up around guns. Well, I came from a single parent household in Jackson, MS, so I didn’t have a daddy that would take me hunting when I was nine years old. I was grown and mar-ried before I ever bought my fi rst rifl e. When I came through patrol school and we started shooting—I kind of liked it. I mean it was fun and it was a way to get away from the stress of patrol school.

SSUSA: Were you winning matches back then?

PHIL: No, I wasn’t the top shooter. I think I was fourth or fi fth in the class.

SSUSA: Some who read this article won’t know what PPC is all about. Can you go over it?

PHIL: In Police Pistol Competition we shoot an open class 1500 revolver match, distinguished revolver, service revolver, open semi-auto 1500, distin-guished semi-auto and stock semi-auto. And then there’s the undercover or off-duty pistol—so that’s seven. And then the shotgun would make eight matches altogether, shot over six days. The evolution of the new tactical matches like the New Mexico Challenge and the Tactical Police Competition have gone leaps and bounds over the PPC matches. Up until the 1960s, everyone just practiced and qualifi ed with bullseye shooting. Then they realized when they got into a gun fi ght, you don’t stand at the 50 yard line with a pistol in one hand and shoot at the bad guy. highway patrol class back in 1980, I wasn’t the top shooter because most of the kids in my class came from rural backgrounds and grew up around guns. Well, I came from a single parent household in Jackson, MS, so I didn’t have a daddy that would take me hunting when I was nine years old. I was grown and mar-

When I came through patrol school and we started shooting—I kind of liked it. I mean it was fun and it was a way to get away from the stress of patrol school.

Then they realized when they got into a gun fi ght, you don’t stand at the 50 yard line with a pistol in one hand and shoot at the bad guy. That’s where the use of cover came in, followed by strong hand and support hand shooting, as well.

SSUSA: What caused you to consider competing in bullseye?

PHIL: Well, I went up to Camp Perry in 2004 with Jim Collins as a referee. After seeing what was going on, I came back in 2005 as a competitor.

SSUSA: Is there much to say about the transition from one discipline to the other, or was that pretty painless?

PHIL: No, it was not painless. In fact, it was very, very painful. You’d think after pulling the trigger two handed on a revolver or a semi-auto for 25 or 26 years, you would know a little about trigger control. But when you start shooting this bullseye stuff with one hand, you have to relearn trigger control all over again. There’s no sup-port hand to settle things down.

SSUSA: What kinds of things hold your attention during a two-hour practice?

PHIL: A two-hour practice would be a short one. (laughs) I am not saying that I lost my drive or that I lost my hunger for winning in PPC, but I think that’s all been transposed over to bullseye now. I think Jim Collins and I are the only people who have shot a perfect score of 1500 in police combat. And I’ve shot a perfect score of 1920 at the Bianchi Cup. But you know, no one has ever shot a conventional 2700. Nobody has ever shot a 900. So I guess that’s what drives me now.

SSUSA: What is the equipment that you are using now?

PHIL: Let’s see. The .22 is a Feinwerkbau AW93 that I shoot with Lapua OSP ammunition. A friend of mine bought a gun just like mine and his shoots the Lapua Pistol King cartridges best. My Feinwerkbau shoots the Pistol King cartridges into a 1½-inch group, but shoots the OSP into a 3⁄8-inch group. The rest of my guns are a 9 mm from Rock River for centerfi re with an Aimpoint Scope, and another Rock River .45.

SSUSA: And your cleaning routine?

PHIL: I know David Sams [custom gunsmith] doesn’t like a bore snake so I quit using one for competition. I just use a patch worm—the weed eater line with a patch, and a drop or two of MILITEC gun oil.

SSUSA: Since you’re sponsored by Zero Ammunition, does that mean you don’t reload anymore?

PHIL: No, I still reload. In fact I reload their 9 mm bullets for centerfi re, and I also use Atlanta Arms & Ammo’s loaded ammunition. I shoot the Zero manufactured ammo from the long line [50 yards] and, by accident, I just started reloading with some different powder for the short line [25 yards]. I tried to make Vihta Vouri’s N310 pow-der work with the 185 grain Zero bul-let, but the recoil was kind of snappy. So I changed to the N320 powder and now the recoil is a little softer with a tiny little knot hole for a group.

SSUSA: Back to Camp Perry: Did you know where you were day-to-day during the tournament?

PHIL: No I didn’t really know where I was until Friday, when I made the mistake of pulling up the NRA blog on

the little iPhone my wife got me. The fi rst thing I read is Hemphill leads by one point. I didn’t need that distrac-tion but it worked out OK. This year I really worked hard on the .45. I think I have a 2.5-pound trigger fi nger and I’m trying to pull that 3.5 trigger. I wind up snatching it just a little.

I would like to say one thing about the volunteers and folks who run the line at Camp Perry each year. During my .45 match, I had trouble with my scope and eventually had to retire the gun and go to my back-up pistol. The line offi cers and block offi cial could not have been more helpful in what could have been a bad situation. I just want to extend a thank you to them for their support and professionalism.

SSUSA: Do you have any plans of branching out into training videos, books or Hemphill Ammunition?

PHIL: (Laughing) No. I have three little grand boys and I’m looking forward to taking them to deer camp.

SSUSA: Well, I really appreciate you calling in. I know you’re busy. Will we see you at Camp Perry next year?

PHIL: You sure will.

Position Matches—Jul. 21-23

The 54th NRA Out-door Smallbore Posi-tion Championships were fi red under some of the roughest conditions in memory, reaching 105 degrees more than once. CAPT Chris Abalo of the Army Marksman-ship Unit (AMU) shot a 400-38X to take the lead. Just an X separated him from second place Tarl

Kempley of Nevada, while Caitlyn Morrissey was third with 36Xs.

Garrett Spurgeon topped the leader board for standing with a 394-14X. AMU’s SGT Joe Hein stayed close with a 391-19X, with New Hampshire rifl eman Brian Jylkka just three Xs back.

The kneeling match would decide the metallic sight championship and the match went to Hein with a 397-23X. Kempley’s 396-17X and a 394-17X fi red by Deanna Binnie rounded out the top three.

champion with a score of 1188-72X. Spurgeon was hot on his heels with

an 1187-60X and Kempley was third, posting an 1183-74X. After a brutally hot fi rst day, it looked as if the weather would mediate for the any sight matches. The prone match was won by SSG Shane Barnhart’s outstanding 400-40X. CPL Matt Rawlings, Roberts Team veteran Justin Tracy and Michael O’Connor were knotted with 400-39Xs and it took the rule book to award second to Rawlings, third to Tracy and high civilian master to O’Connor.

The temperature and the shooters rose for the standing match, won with a match record score of 399-23X by Sarah Beard of Texas Christian University. Second place Barnhart dropped three for a 397-12X while a 396-19X earned Brandi Eskew third.

As the kneeling match began, the temperature was in the mid-90s while towering cumulus clouds rolled in, accompanied by thunder, lightning and nearly three quarters of an inch of rain, causing four range evacua-tions and a lost relay, which had to be refi red. In spite of this, Abalo won the kneeling match by tying the Perry record of 400-31X set by Michelle Bohren, who fi red a 399-30X for third place. Sandwiched in between was Barnhart’s 400-28X.

Barnhart repeated his 2010 any sight victory with a match record score of 1197-80X. Hein edged out SSG Mike McPhail by 6Xs, both scoring 119. A challenge was needed to determine the grand aggregate winner. Hein’s fi nal target was scored as only having 19 shots but a review found 20 hits. Hein returned to the top step of the podium with a score of 2379-153X to accept open and military champion titles. Silver med-alist Spurgeon (civilian, junior and intermediate junior champion) showed that juniors are a potent force in the 3-position game by posting a score of

2376-132X. Kempley was the bronze medalist with a 2373-157X.

Rain delayed the start of the team matches by 90 minutes. The Army’s Strike Force Gold, captained and coached by SFC Josh Olsen, made a bold statement with a new metal-lic match record score of 2391-169X. Most impressive was the team’s two top scores: a pair of 599-47Xs shot by Rawlings and Abalo. The balance of the score was made by SSG George Norton and Hein.

The Drew Cup, a junior interna-tional postal match sponsored by the National Smallbore Rifl e Association of Great Britain, closed out the position

phase. Team adjutant Walt Walter, team captain Erik Hoskins and team coach Caitlyn Morrissey directed Brad Driscoll, Garrett Spurgeon, Leo Funk, Megan Lee, Margot Lee, Amanda Luoma, Daniel McCall, Katie Bridges, Richard Layton and Megan Polonsky.

Prone Matches—Jul. 24-28After the horrid weather condi-

tions during the position matches, the weather report calling for temp-eratures in the mid-70s was looked upon with relief by over 300 prone shooters. It would turn out that weather reports, like rifl e match scores, are a bit unpredictable.

McPhail shot a 400-35X in the fi rst metallic sight Dewar Match. Veteran long range prone shooter Nancy Tompkins and former national position champion George Norton were hot on his heels with a pair of 400-34Xs. McPhail’s 400-34X score at 100 yards made a strong state-ment about his desire to win his fi rst prone title. He had to wrestle the match away from 2009 Roberts Team member Mark DelCotto on a tie break-ing rule. In third was Bart Parnall of Columbia, SC, with a 400-33X.

The day ended on the 50-meter line with DelCotto posting a 400-37X for the win. Rawlings and Abalo rounded out the top three with 35X and 34X cleans. McPhail posted a clean at 50 meters giving him the fi rst day’s aggregate with a perfect 1200-103X. International Distinguished Badge holder Reya Kempley and Olympic medalist Mike Anti also shot 1200s and were second and third with 88Xs and 81Xs respectively.

The second half of the metallic sight championship opened with British shooter Keith Ridgeway, expert Catherine Kauffelt and Abalo knotted at 400-35X in the Dewar, fi nishing in that order. McPhail and DelCotto also posted cleans. Air Force LTC Doug Clark topped the fi eld in the 100-yard match with a 400-32X with Anti and Kempley coming in second and third with 440-31Xs each. McPhail and DelCotto were still clean.

Clark posted his second win of the day with a 400-34X at 50 meters. Hein was back in the top three with a 400-33X while DelCotto dropped a point. Clark won the second daily aggregate with a 1200-99X—just 5Xs ahead of the second place Kempley. In third was Hein with an 1199-94X. Lurking just out of the money was DelCotto who had an 1199-93X.

Kempley took the metallic sight and woman honors with a score of 2400-182X. DelCotto was second with a 2398-197X, a mere 5 Xs ahead of Hein. The stage was set for an interesting last two days of

competition. Dave Cramer, who has had a long and storied competitive career, was high senior. Stephen Angeli, a fellow Keystone state rifl e-man of Cramer’s, took the high inter-mediate senior title. Noted shooting historian Paul Nordquist shot a 2398-186X to earn any sight only honors.

The Dewar and Randle Teams are selected from the metallic sight aggregate. Representing the United States in the Dewar Match were Reya Kempley, DelCotto, McPhail, Hein, Abalo, Army SSG Hank Gray, George Norton, Justin Tracy, Sarah Beard, Rawlings, Clark, Bill Neff, Tarl Kempley, Tompkins, Peter Church, Cramer, Army MAJ Rhonda Bright, Shawn Wells, Shane Barnhart, Joe Farmer and alternates Kevin Nevius, George Pantazelos and Parnall under the direction of team captain Anti and coach Ron Wigger.

Randle team captain Lenore Lemanski and coach Roberta Gubbins supervised Reya Kempley, Sarah Beard, Tompkins, Bright, Amada McMullin, Katie Bridges, Bohren, Amada Luoma, Amy Bock, Kauffelt and alternates Morrissey and Michelle Bauer. The Army took both of the team matches with, oddly enough, identical scores of 1597-108Xs and two different line ups

Any sights began with Kempley in the lead and DelCotto and McPhail two points behind. She was in front, but with scopes now on the rifl es, she could not afford to make a single mistake.

In the fi rst any sight Dewar, Nevius and Kempley tied for fi rst place with a 400-36X. Unfortunately for Reya the other “Kempley” was her brother, Tarl, who was relegated to second by the rule book. Claudia Duksa was third with a 400-35X. Reya gave up two points while DelCotto and McPhail stayed clean. She was now tied in points but behind in Xs. Tarl Kempley found himself tied for fi rst again in the 100-yard match. This time he fared no better, fi nishing behind Tompkins after both posting 400-24Xs. Charlie Kemp was third with a 400-32X. Reya

Kempley and DelCotto both lost two points as McPhail dropped one.

The Meter Match revealed just how important experience is in shooting success. Cramer and Wigger each had 400-37Xs with Cramer getting the win. In third place was Farmer with a 400-36X. The average age of these top three rifl emen is 74. Day three closed out with Tarl Kempley in the lead, a 1200-104X, 5Xs ahead of Nevius who was just a single X in front of Tompkins.

High heat and humidity marked the fi nal day. However, conditions allowed 101 competitors (almost 30 percent of those registered) to shoot 400s in the Dewar. Tompkins dropped just 2Xs to win the match while Ginger McLemore of Arizona and Hein were second and third, the best of the seven 400-37X scores recorded.

Conditions picked up during the 100-yard match and the number of 400s dropped off signifi cantly. McPhail was match winner with a 400-38X as Rawlings took second with 36Xs. Garald Wise of Wooster, OH, was third with 35Xs. Abalo won the Meter Match with a 400-37X while Parker and Beard’s identical scores of 400-34X meant that the statisti-cal people consulted the rule book to decide second in favor of Parker.

Tompkins’ perfect two-day score of 2400-200X won both the any sight and women’s championship. Parker was second and high intermediate senior with a 2399-194X while Justin Tracy was third with a 2399-191X. High senior went to Nordquist who shot his second 2398 of the tournament, this time with 185X.

McPhail started the match with a win and ended it with the aggregate victory. He and DelCotto battled all week and ended with identical scores of 4796, but McPhail had 401Xs to Delcotto’s 380Xs. Abalo was third on the back of his 4795-388X. Nordquist matched his fi rst two-day score of 2398-188X with almost an identical 2398-185X and was named the any sight only champion.

Perhaps feeling guilty for the blows dealt to smallbore shooters in the weeks prior, Mother Nature pulled her punches for the 422 high power com-petitors this year with mild weather. Towards the end of the week, some competitors even donned shooting jackets for the morning roll call as the mercury dipped below 70.

The traditional format for the four-day National Rifl e Championships at Camp Perry is to make a separate match of each of the 12 fi ring lines, with trophies for the 200 standing (Members Trophy Match), 200 rapid (Scott Trophy) and 300 rapid (Coast Artillery) on day one, the 200 standing (Navy Cup), 200 rapid (Coast Guard

Trophy) and 600 prone (Army Cup) on day two, and so on, fi ring 60 record shots each day plus six sighters. Additional award categories are cre-ated through an aggregate score of, for example, the three 200 yard stand-ing matches shot during the week. Once special awards such as the High Service Rifl e with an Optic Sight, individual awards like High Woman, High Senior and High Collegiate are included along with class awards and sub-aggregates, approximately 63 trophies or plaques are presented on awards night.

LONG RANGEBY LARS DALSEIDE, NRA MEDIA RELATIONS

Long Range Matches—Aug. 13-17David Tubb of Canadian, TX, led

317 long range shooters to win the NRA’s 2011 National Long Range High Power Rifl e Championship. Also winner of the Wimbledon Cup, Tubb’s dominant performance through-out the week concluded with yet another national record-setting score of 1249-68X.

“Honestly, my wind reading is the best it’s ever been and my prone skills are coming around,” said Tubb. “I’m very pleased with the results.” Referred to as the sport’s resident heavyweight by “Sports Illustrated,” 2011 is Tubb’s sixth National Long Range High Power Rifl e title in 24 years, his most recent coming in 2004.

“Usually I shoot a few tournaments before Perry, but this is my fi rst one of the year,” said Tubb. “I’ve been coaching a lot on across-the-course and steel [matches], so I’ve had some time behind the scope, just not behind the trigger. I used Tubb 2000 rifl es in all stages, shooting 6XC Norma brass with the DTAC

115 grain boron nitride-coated 6 mm bullet, hand loaded on aZermatic powder measure with a blend of Hodgdon powders in all of the 1000-yard matches. In the Palma match, I shot a .308

with boron-coated Sierra bullets. All bullets were sorted for length and pointed. In the scoped matches, I used a 5x25 power Premier scope with the DTR reticle.”

With a fi nal score of 1247-68X, defending champion John Whidden fi nished second overall while Rodrigo Rosa took third with a 1244-53X. Also a multiple long range title holder, Whidden shot side-by-side with Tubb on the fi nal day of competition.

“I fi nished two or three shots ahead of David on the fi nal relay,” said Whidden. “I had a chance, but he was shooting too well. He wasn’t giving any-thing away.”

NATIONAL MATCHES

National Defense Match—Aug. 13-14The inaugural National Defense

Match (NDM) ran concurrently with the fi rst two days of the Long Range Championships. Using an invitation-only format, this year’s 60 competitors helped iron out the wrinkles as NRA makes plans not only to integrate this future 3-gun match into the Camp Perry tradition, but into local clubs across the country as well. While the 2011 NDM tactical rifl e match was designed to be shot from 7 to 500 yards, the course-of-fi re is ulti-mately designed to accommodate a local club’s existing 100-yard range.

The inaugural match received tremendous support from the fi re-arms industry with FNH USA put-ting multiple fi rearms on the awards table as the match title sponsor. Also contributing were Geissele Triggers, JP Enterprises, Sinclair International, Warner Scope Mounts, Cheaper Than Dirt!, Chiappa Firearms and Blade-Tech. As is usually the case, we are indebted to these companies for their help in getting this match off the ground.

Earning the fi rst NDM gold medal was “Top Shot” season one winner

Iain Harrison (r.). Said Harrison: “I’m very fortunate to have a range between my job at Crimson Trace and home. They run weekly matches at 600 yards, so I used that opportunity to check my zeroes and put in a little practice at judging wind and drift. I’d never shot at Camp Perry before, but everything I read about the venue mentioned the wind conditions, so I fi gured that would be a good place to start.

“Trey Tuggle [Match Director] published the course-of-fi re well in advance of the event and he did a good job balancing speed and

accuracy. With the instant feed-back provided by the electronic target systems, it was clear that you could get a little bit of a lead in the close range stages, but lose it to penalties at the longer distances. I ran my Open Division 3-gun AR-15 with 55 grain ammunition at 100 yards and under, switching to 75 grain bullets as the range increased. It was a privilege to be invited to the fi rst match of its type and shoot with such a wide vari-ety of servicemen, industry pros and of course my good buddy Chris Cerino from ‘Top Shot.’”

This year’s match was electronically scored on a time-plus-penalties basis. As a result, the competitor with the lowest aggregate time for the entire course wins, placing the lowest score on top of the leaderboard. The decimal fi gures are fractions of a second rather than X count.

LANNY BASSHAM, Smallbore Rifl eMy answer might not be the same as others. It doesn’t

mean they are right, or I am right. There are multiple ways that people deal with pressure. One of the things I learned in my early shooting career is that I had some wrong ideas about pressure. The reason that I wasn’t able to deal with it was because I didn’t understand what the right ideas were. Initially, I was able to fi nd some information outside of shooting. When I started working on this in a lot more detail, I found a lot of misinformation about the sensation of pressure.

The major reason why this has become a problem for some is because people are very interested in outcome

and accomplishment—they want to do well. They want to fi nish the event on top of the leaderboard. While we’re thinking about outcome, the probability is that we can’t simultaneously be thinking about executing the shot. This can cause us to “over try”—and that’s the number one reason why good shooters don’t shoot well under pressure. Shooting is a “trust sport” not a “try sport.” You need to train so well that you can trust your training. The minute that you try to get that national record, things come unzipped. You are applying more mental effort than it actu-ally requires. Our conscious thoughts are interfering with our subconscious mind. The best scores that people shoot happen when they are not thinking about the outcome.

happen when they are not thinking about the outcome.

Here’s a myth: Pressure causes performance to drop. Pressure does not cause your performance to drop. What I learned about pressure was that when you feel the physi-cal effects of pressure, it’s real. You feel an adrenaline rush, your heart rate increases and your blood pressure goes up. I’ve seen shooters shoot extremely high scores with their legs shaking. Pressure doesn’t cause your scores to go up or down—but your attitude does.

Another myth: If I could avoid pressure, I would do better. Actually, pressure is an amplifi er. It is my friend. Pressure makes me realize what I’m doing is important so I pay better attention to my shooting. Be careful what you care about. It is more important to focus on your shooting

process. The primary reason people “over try” is that they go into competition with an incomplete goal. People tend to seek out what society rewards them for, and accomplish-ment is easy to measure. It has a number associated with it. But it is focusing on the process that will get you there. Attaining that goal—how and what we learn from our mis-takes, is valuable. There’s nothing like making a mistake to make a person realize that they need to do something about it. If you look at the only benefi t of shooting in a tournament as a place on the leaderboard, then you don’t recognize the accomplishments that lead up to that score as the more important objective.

Pressure is not the problem. It gets a bad rap. You don’t want to get rid of it. You’re not going to go to the Olympics without it. You better make it a friend. It’s put there for you to amplify the experience of doing something few people can do.

The primary reason we compete should be so we can pay attention to who we become along the way. When outcome is primary, we’re concentrating on the wrong thing. When I stopped trying to win tournaments, I started winning. When I stopped worrying about where the bullet went, I concen-trated on how well I executed the shot.

JESSIE HARRISON, Action PistolSay I’m at a match to defend my title. That means the

other ladies are ready to go after it too and want to beat me, so I do feel a certain amount of pressure. The way I deal with it is I never look at scores during a match. If I’m behind or ahead, I don’t want to know it. I don’t want to put pressure on myself if I’m behind, and I don’t want to think I can coast if I learn that I’m ahead.

Not knowing where I stand as the match progresses allows me to do my very best every time I step to the line—giving it everything I can, right there. If I am in a match and I know I have a good stage, it gives me self-confi dence to shoot well. But then I tell myself that stage is over, and the next stage is a brand new one. If I do badly, I have to drop it, forget it and move on. Otherwise, dwelling on it becomes a self-fulfi lling prophesy.

One thing I’ve always said: “I can only shoot to the best of my ability.” If that’s enough to win the match, that’s great; If not, I’ll be the fi rst to congratulate the others. I want everyone to compete at their best so we can say, “Whoever won, they were the best shooter that day.”

My main job is to be on the range and shoot. I spend 4 to 5 days out of the week on the range, training for what I have coming up and making sure that my equipment and guns are working properly. I check all my equipment before I go to a match. The last thing you want is to have a problem with your gun. In my sport, there are no alibis. This preparation also helps me deal with pressure.

Because each match can be unique, I don’t have set regi-mens. Instead, I keep a clear head when I shoot. If there

is an unusual type of shot in a match, I’ll just focus on the basics of executing that shot. At the Florida Open, for example, there was a 12-inch plate at 40 yards—a little longer distance than normal. I cleared my head and told myself, “you have done this shot many times.” Next, I go over the fundamentals of what is involved in executing that particular shot. I visualize myself executing every element of the shot: A clean draw; my dot coming up on the center of that plate and executing the trigger pull. I visualize every detail in the exact sequence of the shot.

Sometimes I will practice every element of my shooting at an exaggerated slow pace to make sure that I execute all the little pieces perfectly. Auto racers have a saying: Slow is smooth and smooth is fast, and there is a lot of truth in that.

I also constantly work on little things that sometimes get overlooked. For example, I work heavily on my footwork to be as smooth as possible as I transport myself along the line, with no wasted movement. I practice leaning into and out of barriers to make those transitions as smooth as pos-sible. I also practice my draw, sometimes taking an entire day just to work on that. I’ll start in slow motion and then speed it up when the fundamentals are right.

The point of all this is to take away pressure during competition. When the timer goes off, my mind is blank. If I start to think—that is when I screw up and slip into the past tense, thinking about how I messed up. When you’re shooting in competition, you can’t be past or future tense. You have to be in the moment.

Launi MeiLi, Smallbore & Air RifleIn my experience, it comes down to the shooter’s person-

ality as far as dealing with pressure. Dan Durban is the one person I know who used “fear of failure” in a positive way. That was his fuel to not shoot badly. For me, every time I shot, I expected to break a record. I had very positive expectations, but I also trained to earn it. If you’re shoot-ing 10 points better than you’ve ever shot, you need to keep your perspective. If you’re saying to yourself, “This could be a national record,” you’re bringing the future onto your shoulders. If that happens, you have to deal with it. But what is your job really right then? To shoot one perfect shot—the thing that you’ve done thousands of times to fin-ish out this match. It takes practice to have that discipline.

My big experience with pressure was in the 1988 Olympics. I went into the finals with a new Olympic record, and then dropped more shots in the final than in the whole

match. For the next four years, I mentally shot thousands of shots as if I were in a final. My job was to shoot 10s. I didn’t need to let scores bug me in the final. I needed a stronger plan to handle each shot of the final so that, no matter what, I could rely on that plan to get me through. The key question is: What does it take for me to shoot one perfect shot?

Finally in 1992 I went into the smallbore final in first place and I kept that lead. I’m talking about repeatedly executing the perfect shot—inside a 9.8 or better. Everything goes back to the practiced routine. For example: Before I pick up my gun, I analyze my last shot to decide what changes I need to make, i.e. the placement of the last shot, where I thought the wind was, where the wind actually was, etc. in order to learn from the last shot. It’s important to be realistic and constructive. A key component of evaluating the last shot is being optimistic vs. pessimistic, i.e. a constructive attitude. What can I learn from the last shot that I can use on the next shot? Don’t begin a shot sequence while you’re being negative or emotionally self-destructive.

Once I’ve analyzed the previous shot, I have a plan of how and when I want to take that next shot. I check my body; take three breaths and relax, relaxing a little bit more with each shot, just letting everything go. I take another deep breath and lift the gun. As I exhale, the gun comes down on my hip and the target. And now I’m looking over my sights, and I take another couple of breaths to check my body alignment. I put my finger on the trigger and take another breath while I put my face on the cheek piece, assuming that my natural point of aim is correct. Now I take another 2 to 3 breaths. Take one more slight breath and hold. I stop my breath as the sights align at the center of the target. I’ve checked my rear and front sight alignment and now am focusing on the target because it’s the thing that’s not moving. I am anchored in the 10 ring. My shot plan starts at the ground and ends in the 10 ring. The thing that you should always be able to rely on is your shot plan, both physically and mentally. You train for endurance to shoot your last shot as well as your first. You have to build it and learn to trust it. To use it and trust it when the pres-sure’s on, takes years of training.

JuLie GoLob, Action PistolThe critical thing for me is to accept that there is

going to be pressure. You’re going to feel nervous or can even have feelings of self-doubt. Add to that, whether you’re thinking about it or not, your body is going to naturally react to tension. The best thing you can do is simply accept this.

There are two ways that I deal with it. The first is to stay positive. It’s never over until it’s over. I’ve seen shooters pout and throw equipment on the ground after a bad run. Not only can it reflect badly on the

Not only can it reflect badly on the

shooter, but if you allow a negative attitude into your competitive mindset, you could lose because of it. Instead, I think, “This is my time to really feel alive.” It’s like the moment before bungee jumping or the moment you start to move on a crazy roller coaster ride—you feel everything pumping through you in that moment. Harness that nervous energy as positive excite-ment. It can actually help you shoot well if you accept it and not fear it.

The second thing, while you have all these emotions racing through your system, is to focus on technique. As an action shooter, I tell myself to micromanage everything about my stage—every little thing that I can, instant by instant. Nothing is on auto pilot when I’m preparing to shoot.

Hear the buzzer, draw the gun and bring the sights in line with the target. Smoothly engage the trigger. Trigger the shot. I think about all these things and focus strictly on what to do. I micromanage the moment as best I can, focusing on the individual skills necessary for the particular event I am shooting. This helps me to avoid thinking about pressure. This type of visualization is like getting a free “perfect” run at the course. When you’re actually competing, it’s possible to shoot in what many athletes call “the zone.” But if for some reason you can’t get there, focus on all the steps needed—the process, that will help you to do the best you can.

At the end of the day, I think some shooters get angry with themselves for not having a perfect performance. You have to be proud of yourself for putting forth your best effort. Don’t be angry with your performance, just learn from it and focus on the positive for the next time.

Jason Parker, Smallbore & Air Rifle

The best way to deal with shooting so well that it scares you is to have prepared yourself for those days when you are successful. You have to be ready for those big scores to hit you at any point, which starts with training. When you’re about to shoot a record or are trying out for an Olympic team, you say to yourself, “I’ve been shooting these scores in practice, it’s okay to shoot this score now.”

I do a lot with breathing techniques. I don’t have to shoot a particular shot if I don’t want to, so I take a couple of deep breaths, let my heart rate go down and then I’m ready to shoot the shot.

During my preparation, I have a pre-shot routine that I can depend on—how everything is supposed to be positioned and how it is supposed to feel. When I feel my heart rate go up, I go back to my pre-shot routine. If you do every single shot the same way, you can take it anywhere, be comfortable with that and shoot a 10 at any time. I’m just doing the same thing I did in practice. I was shooting in a world cup and shot a world record. When I felt that extra anxiety coming on, I embraced it, and then I used my breathing and relaxation techniques to calm down.

If you missed the pre- ceding series, just go to www.shootingsportsusa.com, select the current issue and then look for the archives menu choice.

It’s like the moment before bungee jumping or the moment you start to move on a crazy roller coaster ride—you feel everything pumping through you in that moment.

…that during the 1860s and 1870s, the industry was transitioning from heeled bullets, whose largest diameter equaled the outside diameter of the cartridge case, to non-heeled bullets, which took on the smaller inside case diameter. The origi-nal .38 cal. bullets were heeled and actually mea-sured 38/100 inch. When manufacturers redesigned the entire bullet to fit inside the cartridge case, the diameter shrunk to approximately .357 inches but kept the established “.38 cal.” reference.

DiD You Know?

… that the huts at Camp perry were built around 1943 as housing for prison-ers of war? Before the war, huts were not available and many shooters stayed in the barracks, in tents or in the nearby town of port Clinton, Oh.

To rent a hut during the 2012 national matches, you’ll need to check back after January 1, 2012, at www.cplcc.com when the new policies will have been published.

You can see the 2011 pro-cedures by logging onto the above website, selecting national match informa-tion at the top of the page and then downloading the national match lodging pro-cedures from the lower left link on the page.

hut prices for 2011 were $43.90 per night per 4-per-son room or $10.98 per bed (same price as a barracks bed) if individual bed rentals are allowed. After support organizations like nRA, Cmp and Junior Teams are pro-cessed, adult teams are third priority, followed by special needs (require a doctor’s statement) then individual competitors.

Remember when calling the Camp perry lodging office that the huts may be full for the Cmp matches, but empty for the nRA matches that immediately follow.
