To say, ‘well done’ to any bit of good work is to take hold of the powers which have made the effort and strengthen them beyond our knowledge. – Phillips BrooksDear Friends,

Blessings and Godspeed in the midst of these beautiful autumn days. We are busy at St. Mark’s. The cranes and the crews are diligently repairing our slate roof, our stained glass, and remedying our termite damage.

· The scaffolding that is standing in the north transept will remain as our engineer and contractor repair the termite damage in the roof.

· The porte cochere roof, covered drive, on the Rutherford side will have to be completely replaced in the coming months as a result of termite damage and water damage.

· The Building Committee is in the process of reviewing and updating our termite coverage and protection.

· If you look closely at the stained glass you will notice that our new protective glass is translucent, clear, and we will no longer have the tinted-green glass covering our beautiful windows – I am very excited to lose the tinted-green protective glass.

· The slate on the roof is being repaired, with the addition of metal ridge-caps that will offer a significant increase in durability, and reduce the ongoing opportunity for water damage.

· All of the flat-roofs on the school and cathedral side should be finished within the month.

· Although we often take them for granted, or do not notice, please note that the school and parish hall windows have been completely replaced. These windows have greater weather resistance, lower maintenance requirements, as well as being insulated. This was a major, major, undertaking that is now complete.

Other projects remain in the planning stages, i.e.: the Kings/Fairfield fence that will be refurbished; an upgrade to our HVAC that will include replacing boilers, and replacing air handling units as needed; as well as repairing our damaged pews, and exploring a new hearing aid system that utilizes the latest technology.

I have had questions about the ongoing plans to build a new kindergarten. We remain committed to this project, and remain in need of additional capital to reach that goal. The Executive Committees of the School and the Cathedral Vestry are discerning next steps. Please be assured that no contributions toward the new kindergarten were, or will ever be, used for the purpose of maintaining the cathedral. We seek to maintain the integrity of those designations. Once we have more capital in hand, we will be able to create a firmer timeline for the kindergarten project.

We should give our thanks to the building committee and the Vestry for their tireless efforts to care for this beautiful place that we share. The lay leadership of St. Mark’s is a blessing to us all; let us give thanks for our faithful leadership.

Blessings and Godspeed, Alston

Surprised by HopeBeginning November 1, Dean Alston and Canon Thomas will begin a new series on Surprised by Hope, by Bishop N.T. Wright. These will be video talks from Wright followed by a discussion. In these 6 series you will discover that Wright attempts to do mainly three things. First, he exposes the generally muddled Christianity’s views of life after death by taking us through the historical evidence for and the theological explanation of Jesus’ resurrection. Second, he answers questions on eschatology that arise from the resurrection – and how this eschatological framework fits the New Testament witness. Third, he shows how the Christian’s future hope of resurrection forms the foundation for the mission and spirituality of believers. I hope you will come and join us as we think together about and establish our long held hope in the resurrection.

“Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, when one only remembers to turn on the light.” – Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore

One thing that stands out this time of the year, besides cooler days with less melting when one ventures outside, mosquitos being banished back to the abyss from which they came, and the joys of pumpkin spiced, well, everything… The one thing is that the days are getting darker sooner. Yet dark days, for some, don’t always refer to the amount of daylight. We all have those darker days. Those days which we live through. The ones that we survive. Stress, abandonment, loss, pain, disappointment… These are the seeds that seem to rob us of the light, and leave us stuck. And man, can we get stuck. It’s as if we are wandering around a dark room, searching for a way out, and every time we think we have made progress – that we are almost through – we find ourselves back where we

This Little Light of Mine!by Brooks [email protected]

started, even more stuck. Feeling even more drained for the things that should bring us joy. The key...is turning on the light. But that can be a lot easier said than done. And sometimes, for the life of us, we just can’t find the light. But that is usually because we are looking in the wrong place. Jesus tells us to be a light to world, to be that through which He shines unto others. This is also so that we can find those people who also shine for us. The solution for fighting back the dark, is always to shine. And to fight the darkness in our lives, no matter how well we keep it hidden, is to find those through which Christ’s light shines brightly. To find those who light our way. To admit that we actually do need others, and that no matter how strong, or independent, or competent we are, we can’t do this by ourselves. We always need help. The help that comes from Christ – a place of love, compassion, and understanding. It is in that humility, that we let others’ light reveal the path we need out of the darkness. In a very short time we will be in the Advent season again, as we reflect on the Gift of Christ that is coming into this world. Let us remember the Light that He is bringing. Let us remember those who hold the light for us; who guide us. For they are in our lives for a reason. And let us always remember that the gifts of God, no matter who carries them for us, always begins with the Light for He who loves us.
