CHRIST IS KING On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we cele-brate the feast of Christ the King. It’s easy to under-stand today’s scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus’ words to Pi-late in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom trans-cends time and place. And the prophecies from Dan-iel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are pro-claiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and on-ly King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of crea-tion. No matter what nation we belong to or what lan-guage we speak, he “has made us into a king-dom” (Revelation 1:6)—one people united in love and peace for all eternity. Copyright © J. S. Reading “Rejoice and Be Glad” “Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your lives.” These words are used at Mass to send us back out into the world, to glorify the Lord. But how do we do that? How can our little lives add anything to the splendor and majesty of God? Join us on five consecutive Tuesdays to explore Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation “Rejoice and Be Glad: On the Call to Holiness in Today’s World”. In five chapters, the Holy Father explores ways in which the Lord calls us all to holiness, “each in his or her own way”. Sessions will begin at 6 pm, and last about an hour. Each session will focus on one of the five chapters of the document. No registration is required. Presenter: Fr. M. Keith LaBove, Pastor Where: St. Patrick Catholic Church – 406 E. Liturgical Roles for December

From the Pastor’s Desk

This week, as we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King, we rejoice at the outpouring of generosity that marks this time of year for so many, including the feeding of the hungry at Thanksgiving, a clear sign of Christ ’s kingship. Yet a newly released pastoral letter from our US Bishops highlights one aspect of our society where Christ’s kingship has been rejected. Entitled “Open Wide Our Hearts”, it confronts the “particularly destructive and persistent form of evil” known as racism. A brief excerpt follows:

“Racism arises when—either consciously or unconsciously—a person holds that his or her own race or eth-nicity is superior, and therefore judges persons of other races or ethnicities as inferior and unworthy of equal re-gard. When this conviction or attitude leads individuals or groups to exclude, ridicule, mistreat, or unjustly discrim-inate against persons on the basis of their race or ethnicity, it is sinful. Racist acts are sinful because they violate justice. They reveal a failure to acknowledge the human dignity of the persons offended, to recognize them as the neighbors Christ calls us to love (Mt 22:39).

“Racism occurs because a person ignores the fundamental truth that, because all humans share a common origin, they are all brothers and sisters, all equally made in the image of God. When this truth is ignored, the conse-quence is prejudice and fear of the other, and—all too often—hatred. . . . Every racist act is a failure to acknowledge another person as a brother or sister, created in the image of God. In these and in many other such acts, the sin of racism persists in our lives, in our country, and in our world.

“Racism comes in many forms. It can be seen in deliberate, sinful acts. In recent times, we have seen bold expressions of racism by groups as well as individuals. The re-appearance of symbols of hatred, such as nooses and swastikas in public spaces, is a tragic indicator of rising racial and ethnic animus. All too often, Hispanics and Afri-can Americans, for example, face discrimination in hiring, housing, educational opportunities, and incarceration. Racial profiling frequently targets Hispanics for selective immigration enforcement practices, and African Ameri-cans, for suspected criminal activity. There is also the growing fear and harassment of persons from majority Mus-lim countries. Extreme nationalist ideologies are feeding the American public discourse with xenophobic rhetoric that instigates fear against foreigners, immigrants, and refugees. Finally, too often racism comes in the form of the sin of omission, when individuals, communities, and even churches remain silent and fail to act against racial injus-tice when it is encountered.“ In other words, racism leaves little room for the Kingship of Christ.
