Before You Begin…

Dear seniors,

This Scholarship Handbook contains scholarships from local organizations and well-

known annual scholarships. Please remember to:

1. Start your application packets early.

2. Ask for letters of recommendations now. Use the “Request for Letter of

Recommendation” form found in this packet. Fill it out and make a copy to give

to each person writing your letter.

3. Turn in your scholarship application packets on or before Friday, February 5,

2016 to the Career Center.

4. Please read through all of the scholarships and only apply to those that you

meet the requirements. Do not waste your time on scholarships that you are not

qualified for.

5. These scholarships and more are found on the school website:

http://www.cnusd.k12.ca.us/Page/22142. Check back weekly for more

scholarships added to the website. Visit the Career Center to get paper copies of

Your Personal Essay

Please plan carefully. Give yourself plenty of time to write your personal statement. Format the essay –

Font size = 12

double-spaced

no more than 2 pages Write an essay that will provide a comprehensive picture of who you are.

1) Introduce yourself by providing background information. 2) Briefly state your academic accomplishments (ex. Honors/AP/AVID student,

academic awards). 3) State your extracurricular activities, jobs or volunteer work. 4) Explain how these activities and accomplishments have shaped your life. 5) State your future goals and objectives and include where you plan to go to

college as well as your major field of study (if you have decided). 6) State your financial needs – explain why the scholarship will help you fulfill your

dreams. 7) Be sincere and honest.

Towards the end of your essay:

Express appreciation to the agency for offering money to a deserving student. When you are done:

Check for grammatical and spelling errors before turning in your scholarship packets.

After you have completed writing your best essay, let someone read it who can be objective and will not mind offering his/her honest opinion.

Do NOT:

Wait until the night before the due date to write your essay. Prepare it in advance and save on the computer so it can be revised and personalized for a specific scholarship.

Print TWO Copies Print one copy with your name on the right hand corner of your essay and another without your name for each scholarship.
