MAJOR PLAYERS

The Edible Oil industry is mostly dominated in Gujarat by Tirupati Oil, Saffola Oil, Ankur Oil, Krishna oil and others. There are many companies which are engaged in producing soyabean oil, corn oil, cotton oil, groundnut oil, etc. All these companies are in competition with N.K. Proteins. All those companies have their products in the market.

BACKGROUND

EDIBLE OIL

Edible oil in simple terms means “A liquid fat that is capable of being eaten as a food or food accessory. Edible oil can be further classified in to different types :-

Peanut Oil

Cottonseed Oil

Corn Oil

Soyabean Oil

Sunflower Oil

Peanut Oil

Peanut oil (arachis oil) is an organic oil derived from peanuts, noted to have the slight aroma and taste of its parent legume. In the UK it is marketed as 'Groundnut Oil'.

It is often used in South Asian and Southeast Asian cuisine much as olive oil is used in the Mediterranean. Peanut oil is appreciated for its high smoke point relative to many other cooking oils. Its major component fatty acids are palmitic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid. The oil also contains some 6–

15

Page 15: N.K.PROTINS

8% (total) of arachidic acid, behenic acid, lignoceric acid and other fatty acids. Peanut oil was used as the original source of fuel for the engine. Peanut oil is most commonly used when frying foods, particularly French fries and chicken.

Cottonseed Oil

'Health-Hygiene and lots of love' may be a punchline of high recall to the reader but for N. K. Proteins it tells of the success of N. K. Proteins' operation Golden Flow. Available in 15 Kg Tin, 15 Lt Jar, 1 Lt. Bottle an pouch, the brand continues to be a leader in the market.

Corn Oil

Corn oil is oil extracted from the germ of corn (maize). Its main use is in cooking, where its high smoke point makes it valuable frying oil. It is also a key ingredient in some margarine. Corn oil has a milder taste and is less expensive than most other types of vegetable oils.

One bushel of corn contains 1.55 pounds of corn oil (2.8% by weight). Corn agronomists have developed high-oil varieties; however, these varieties tend to show lower field yields, so they are not universally accepted by growers. Refined corn oil is 99% triglyceride, with proportions of approximately 59% polyunsaturated fatty acid, 24% monounsaturated fatty acid, and 13% saturated fatty acid.

16

Page 16: N.K.PROTINS

Soybean Oil

The soybean (U.S.) or soya bean (UK) (Glycine max) is a species of legume native to East Asia. It is an annual plant that may vary in growth, habit, and height. It may grow prostrate, not growing higher than 20 cm (7.8 inches), or even stiffly erect up to 2 meters (6.5 feet) in height. The pods, stems, and leaves are covered with fine brown or gray pubescence. The leaves are trifoliolate, having 3 leaflets per leaf, and the leaflets are 6–15 cm (2–6 inches) long and 2–7 cm (1–3 inches) broad. The leaves fall before the seeds are mature. The small, inconspicuous, self-fertile flowers are borne in the axil of the leaf and are white, pink or purple. The fruit is a hairy pod that grows in clusters of 3–5, with each pod 3–8 cm (1–3 inches) long and usually containing 2–4 (rarely more) seeds 5–11 mm in diameter.

Sunflower Oil

Sunflower oil is the non-volatile oil expressed from sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seeds. Sunflower oil is commonly used in food as frying oil, and in cosmetic formulations as an emollient.

It shows the superior subordinate relationship and also clears the way authority and responsibility flows in the organization between managers and other personnel. These charts are somewhat like “road maps” as they are guide for an official relationship.

Hierarchy refers to levels of authority in the organization, which starts from the board of directors at the top operating workers at the bottom. Managerial structure compares people and it is the path through which management performs the important functions of the important function of the direction coordination and control.

For an organization to succeed, it has to have a proper organizational Application. There are three levels of organization which can be understood

As follows:

1) Top Level Management

2) Middle Level Management

3) Bottom Level Management

PRODUCTION PROCESS

Process Introduction:

Vegetable oil refinery in our country is relatively a recent technology inducted in the past two decades. In vegetable oil refining, there are two types of process available viz. chemical refining & physical refining. In chemical refining, there are three main process involves viz. Degumming & Neutralizing, Bleaching & deodorizing for removal of various impurities from the raw oil. So far large quantities of expeller/solvent groundnut oil, rapeseed oil are used for edible purpose directly with simple filtration. They are physically purified and they are known as double filtered oils. However, due to more and more awareness about various health aspects, like harmful effects of various natural impurities of raw oils, such as free fatty acid (FFA), the cause for the cholesterol increase, plant pigments, phosphatides etc. consumers prefer refined vegetable oils against simple filtered oils. Oil refining industry has developed considerably in the last one decade. Further more, due to the chronic shortage of vegetable oils in our country, many oils, which are not previously used for human consumption, are being processed and used for human consumption. We have the most integrated automatic and continuous plant from Alfa Laval, Sweden with the capacity of 400 MT per day of edible oil. In processing various oils in our plant, the following technologies are used.

28

Page 28: N.K.PROTINS

Bleaching:

Purpose of the bleaching process is the complete or partial removal of colour bodies (pigments) from the oil. The pigments can be destroyed through chemical attack by oxidizing agents. The colour of the neutralised oil is improved by treating the oil with bleaching earth or a mixture of bleaching earth and carbon, that absorbs the colouring substance dissolved in oil.

The bleacher is divided into two compartments in order to prevent short

circuiting of oil/bleaching earth slurry and equipped with an agitator in

each compartment to maintain good mixing of earth and oil. After the

bleacher, the slurry of hot oil and bleaching earth is transferred to filter

section.

29

Page 29: N.K.PROTINS

Filteration

The filteration takes place in two alternatively operating pressure leaf

filters, where the bleaching earth is completely removed from the oil. While

one filter is in operation the other filter is blow with steam in order to

remove residual oil in the bleaching earth. After filteration, oil is passed

through one of the alternatively working polish filters before going to the

deodorisation.

30

Page 30: N.K.PROTINS

Deodorisation:

In the conventional edible oil refinery Deodorization is the last in a series of

process steps used to improve the taste, odour, colour and stability of the

oils by the removal of undesirable substances. The materials removed by

deodorisation include FFA, various flavours and odiferous compounds

classified largely as aldehydes, ketones and hydrocarbons.

Deodorisation is primarily a high temperature, high vacuum, steam

distillation process. Alfa Laval continuous deodoriser is based on the latest

technology using double shell arrangement, which reduces reflux and

ensures that air does not bubble through oil in the event of leakage. The

hot oil is enters the deodoriser and flows continuously under vacuum

through a number of trays via specially designed over flow channels. As the

oil progresses through deodoriser, fatty acids, aldehydes, ketones and

other unwanted materials are vapourised and carried out with the

stripping steam.

31

Page 31: N.K.PROTINS

b) Physical refining:

In recent years, there is a development of new technology, which is not

utilize any chemical at neutralization of oil for removing of various

impurities from the oils, after suitable pre-treatment to the oil refining is

done by using physical methods of separation. Physical refining is process in

which oils are refined using steam and physical methods of separation. This

technology is mostly useful for high FFA oils like palm oil, coconut oil etc.

Nitrogen Blanketing:

By using this process we can control peroxide value due to this shelf life will

be good.

Fully continuous Degumming cum neutralising, bleaching with filteration and deodorization. In this type of continuous refinery, refining of vegetable oil is undertaken by using neutralising, bleaching and deodorisation. This is the latest technology available in our country and with this it is possible to achieve better refining quality and lower processing loss ian total process. This process also minimizes steam, electricity and chemical consumption.

32

Page 32: N.K.PROTINS

Degumming:

Degumming is the process of removal of gums from crude oil, in which they are dissolved. There are two types of gums; hydratable and non-hydratable. Hydratable gums can be removed from oil by hot water treatment. Oil contains non-hydratable gums required to give phosphoric acid treatment for removal of gums.

33

Page 33: N.K.PROTINS

Neutralization:

Neutralization is intended mainly for deacidifying crude fatty oils or

degummed oils. By treatment of the oil with alkali (normally caustic lye) the

alkali will neutralize the free fatty acids contained in the oil and form soap

stock. The soap stock is heavier than oil and can be removed from the oil by

centrifugal separation. Raw oil is neutralized in Short mix Plant and

controlled the process parameters. Most often the crude oil is pretreated

with acid for removal of gums.

WHAT IS MARKETING?

Marketing is delivery of customer satisfaction at a profit. Marketing is an economic process by which goods services and exchanged between the producer and consumer and their values are determined in the terms of the money price.

Marketing is the process of performing market research, selling products and/or services to customers and promoting them via advertising to further enhance sales. It generates the strategy that underlies sales techniques, business communication, and business developments. It is an integrated process through which companies build strong customer relationships and create value for their customers and for themselves.

Marketing is used to identify the customer, to satisfy the customer, and to keep the customer. With the customer as the focus of its activities, it can be concluded that marketing management is one of the major components of business management. Marketing evolved to meet the stasis in developing new markets caused by mature markets and overcapacities in the last 2-3 centuries. The adoption of marketing strategies requires businesses to shift their focus from production to the perceived needs and wants of their customers as the means of staying profitable.

The term marketing concept holds that achieving organizational goals depends on knowing the needs and wants of target markets and delivering the desired satisfactions. It proposes that in order to satisfy its organizational objectives, an organization should anticipate the needs and wants of consumers and satisfy these more effectively than competitors.

Page 42: N.K.PROTINS

Product Line:

In offering a product line, companies normally develop a basic platform and modules that can be added to meet different customer requirements. Car manufacturer build their cars around a basic platform. Homebuilders show a model home to which additional features can be added. This modular approach enables the company to offer variety while lowering production costs.

43

Page 43: N.K.PROTINS

Product Mix:

Range of products sold by a firm. For example, a supermarket sells food, but it may also sell clothes, electrical equipment, beauty products, and stationery; an electric appliance manufacturer may sell washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, televisions, and videos. A firm may expand its product mix by offering different products for sale; for example, a clothes shop may add underwear to its range. It may extend existing ranges; for example, a car manufacturer may bring out a special edition of an existing car model. It may change existing products; for example, a washing powder manufacturer may add more blue flakes to an existing brand and declare it to be ‘new’ and ‘improved’, or a food company may repackage a product.

44

Page 44: N.K.PROTINS

Branding:

The American Marketing Association defines a brand as “A name, term, sign, symbol or design or a combination of them, intended to identify the goods or services of one seller or group of sellers and to differentiate them from those of competitors.” A Brand is thus a product or service that adds dimensions that differentiate it in some way from other products or services designed to satisfy the same need. These differences may be functional, rational or tangible- related to product performance of the brand. They may also be symbolic, emotional or intangible- related to what the brand represents.

45

Page 45: N.K.PROTINS

Packaging:

We define packaging as all the activities of designing and producing the container for a product. Packages might include up to three levels of material. Paco Rabanne cologne comes in a bottle (primary package) that is in a cardboard box (secondary package) that is in a corrugated box (shipping package) containing six dozen boxes of Paco Rabanne.

Well designed packages can create convenience and promotional value. We must include packaging as a styling weapon, especially in food products, cosmetics, toiletries and small consumer appliances. The package is the buyer’s first encounter with the product and is capable of turning the buyer on or off.

46

Page 46: N.K.PROTINS

Factors to Consider When Making Packaging Decision

Packaging decisions are important for several reasons including:

Protection – Packaging is used to protect the product from damage during shipping and handling, and to lessen spoilage if the protect is exposed to air or other elements.

Visibility – Packaging design is used to capture customers’ attention as they are shopping or glancing through a catalog or website. This is particularly important for customers who are not familiar with the product and in situations, such as those found in grocery stores, where a product must stand out among thousands of other products. Packaging designs that standout are more likely to be remembered on future shopping trips.

Added Value – Packaging design and structure can add value to a product. For instance, benefits can be obtained from package structures that make the product easier to use while stylistic designs can make the product more attractive to display in the customer’s home.

Distributor Acceptance – Packaging decisions must not only be accepted by the final customer, they may also have to be accepted by distributors who sell the product for the supplier. For instance, a retailer may not accept packages unless they conform to requirements they have for storing products on their shelves.

Cost – Packaging can represent a significant portion of a product’s selling price. For example, it is estimated that in the cosmetics industry the packaging cost of some products may be as high as 40% of a product’s selling price. Smart packaging decisions can help reduce costs and possibly lead to higher profits.

Expensive to Create - Developing new packaging can be extremely expensive. The costs involved in creating new packaging include: graphic and structural design, production, customer testing, possible

47

Page 47: N.K.PROTINS

destruction of leftover old packaging, and possible advertising to inform customer of the new packaging.

Long Term Decision – When companies create a new package it is most often with the intention of having the design on the market for an extended period of time. In fact, changing a product’s packaging too frequently can have negative effects since customers become

conditioned to locate the product based on its package and may be confused if the design is altered.

Environmental or Legal Issues – Packaging decisions must also include an assessment of its environmental impact especially for products with packages that are frequently discarded. Packages that are not easily bio-degradable could draw customer and possibly governmental concern. Also, caution must be exercised in order to create packages that do not infringe on intellectual property, such as copyrights, trademarks or patents, held by others
