Rating of the Village

• The village selected was “Normal” with respect to development.

• Overall literacy rate of the village is low especially in girls.

• The people are dedicated towards farming and don’t spend much on schooling.

• Most of them are marginal farmers and live in ‘ kachha’ houses with low income.

• There is no drinking Water Supply, drainage system.

• Wells for irrigation.

• The roads in the village and connecting roads are in miserable condition.

• The transport though available is costly.• Electrification is not proper in the Village.

For communication purpose everyone possess mobile phones

No facility for internet and computers.

Teaching ActivitiesEvery day basic computer

literacy program was organized at the Panchayat Bhawan.

◦ Taught the village students about Computer fundamentals Operations Application of MS word, MS

Excel

◦ Students were also educated about the importance of internet.

Students were very eager to learn computer.

We also helped them in subjects like Maths, Physics and Chemistry.

We distributed candies and pen among the students present in the computer learning session.

We met the principals of the schools and discussed about our VAP

NIFTEM movie was shown to the 9th and 10th class students to motivate for technical studies

We tried to create awareness about modern agricultural practices, equipments through videos.

Videos relating to primary and secondary processing of fruits and vegetables were shown.

Students were very curious about the Latest developments in food processing and responded well

Interaction at AADHAAR Card CampAADHAR card camp was held

at the Panchayat bhawan

As a goodwill gesture, the VAP volunteers helped the villagers to fill the AADHAAR card forms as they were facing difficulties.

We also interacted with some women for the Sanitation related Survey in their Households

Interaction with the Officials1. BDO (Premlata Murmu)

• Introduction of our team , NIFTEM and aim of VAP activities

• Infrastructural facilities available at NIFTEM.

• Discussed the major problems and suggested some improvements like:

– To build boundary walls around the wells for safety.

– To improve the electricity supply in certain areas of the village.

– To Improve the drinking water supply.

She wrote all the problems which we discussed with her.

Ensured us for the betterment of the prevailing conditions and also to provide full support next time when we will visit the

village.

2. Village Mukhiya (Sunita Devi) Our team visited the village ‘Mukhiya’ – Smt. Sunita Devi

and the mentor gave brief information about VAP and activities of NIFTEM.

We came to know from her about “Indira Awas Yojana” that was successfully implemented for 14 needy families in the village.

She highlighted the main problems faced in the implementation of various development schemes such as:

◦ Communication gap between various levels of administration.◦ Lack of awareness among the people.

3. SMS and BTMTwo officials from the Block administration visited

the Panchayat Bhawan to take a note of the activities going on :◦ Pradeep Sarkar – BTM (Block Technology Manager)

◦ Shukla Sarkar – SMS (Subject Matter Specialist).

They were briefed about the VAP .

4 Officials from NIFTEMShri Sunil Sinha, Consultant visited on 02-11-2012.

We together with him also had a meeting with the BDO and gave her a brief overview of the activities of NIFTEM

He discussed the issues related to the village to BDO and also the BDO assured us for full support in making the program a success.

INTERACTION WITH THE FARMERS

• Important vegetables and cereal crops grown are cauliflower, cabbage, paddy, brinjal, tomato, garlic, maize, spinach.

• The fields are small in size (mostly <2 Acre).

• There is no storage facilities for the fresh produce.

• Most common irrigation method is by wells (seasonal)

• Selection of crop is according to the land height and the

irrigation facilities.

• Cow dung- most favored manure. Use of inorganic manure is unavoidable.

• 90 % of the people are engaged in agriculture.

Findings about Dairy Farming• Buffaloes:900, Cows: 500, Goat:1000

• Milk production: 3000 lit/day

• Most of the farmers have livestock.

• The milk is sold at approx. 18- 19 Rs per liter which is very less compared to what we purchase.

There are few families who are engaged in the Fish farming and other NFA (Non Farming Activities) also.

Common Problems of Village• Lack of proper irrigation

facilities

• Lack of proper infrastructure such as Roads, Panchayat Bhawan, Primary Health care centers, Anganwadis, etc.

• Lack of Electricity supply to the people of the village.

• Majority of people are dependent on agriculture

• Overall nutrition and hygiene is poor.

• The village lacks proper sanitation and only few people have washroom.

• The connecting road between village and the block is in damaged condition.

• Most of the wells in the fields are uncovered which may lead to contamination of water and accidents.

• People really need to be educated about the Health and Family Welfare Schemes

• There is high percentage of people who are engaged in Consumption of Alcohol.
