Cardigan Castle is almost half
way in its challenge to raise
£150K towards making the Cas-
tle one of the biggest tourism
attractions in Wales.The Cadw-
gan Building Preservation Trust,
which has campaigned for 14
years to save the site, now
needs to raise over £150,000 by
the end of 2014 to secure the
project. The town has been very
supportive to the cause with the
Guildhall’s Charity Christmas
concert raising almost £500.
Cris Tomos, Castle Interim Di-
rector said:
‘We are very grateful to the Guildhall for their support, the concert was outstanding and we hope to continue to work togeth-er in support of the success of the town and the challenge that Cardigan Castle faces in the next two years to secure full funding.’ With the £11M funding depend-ent on raising £150K from the community, the Castle project is grateful to local companies for their continued support. The Cardigan Arms chose the Cas-tle as their charity to donate the money raised from the Welsh Government 5p charge for plas-tic bags and have brilliantly raised almost £300 for the trust. This continued support will hopefully see Cardigan Castle reach its targets and open its doors in the Spring of 2014 as one of Wales’ biggest tourist attractions bringing tourism to Cardigan and the area all year round.
Interested in Archiving and Research? Join Cardigan Castles Archive and Re-search Group to learn and discuss a range of thing from using the internet to locate archival sources, sources for historical re-search, local history sources, medieval printed sources and palaeography, to looking after historical documents at home. You can even bring your own object to identify and dis-cuss and why not join the group on their visits to lo-cal archive services too? Former County Archivist of East Lothian, Sian Collins will lead the group. For the past two years she has kindly helped Cardigan Castle sort the Castles archives and she has proved to have great ideas and is sure to make the group informative and fun. The group will meet twice monthly on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month and sessions will last be-tween one and two hours. The first meeting will be held on the 9
th of February
at 2pm at Tŷ Castell Green Street, Cardigan. Come along to the first meeting and let the group know what interests you. The group is flexible and you don’t have to commit to every session – come along when you can! For more information

Construction starts at Cardigan
Castle by award winning company
Construction Company looking to hire
local companies and individuals Andrew Scott Construction Company has been awarded the £6M contract to devel-op the site of Cardigan Castle to become one of Wales’ biggest tourist attractions. Mark Davies, Andrew Scott’s Site Project Manager says; ‘We are very pleased to have been awarded this contract, we are very close to the project and look forward to deliver over the next year. We understand that the community is very important to the project and to us and will be looking to hire local companies and individuals to help in our works.’ Andrew Scott along with Cardigan Castle and The Welsh Government Business Wales Tendering Support are holding a ‘Meet the Buyer Event’ at Theatr Mwldan Cardigan on the 28th of February for local individuals and companies that specialise in anything from brickwork and block-work to electricals. Contact Eirian Davies to book an appointment for the event; [email protected], 01970 636280 before the 21st of Febru-ary 2012. The successful company was also awarded the contract to repair the walls of the Castle which started in July 2012 and includes stabilising the Castle wall using a number of measures including rock anchors and the construction of a new retaining wall within the Castle grounds. The stanchions have started to be removed and hope to be clear by the end of February. Andrew Scott was recently awarded a
‘Considerate Constructors Award’ for
their work on the Castle walls. The Con-
siderate Constructors Scheme is a na-
tional initiative set up by the construction
industry where contractors are monitored
against a Code of Considerate Practice,
designed to encourage best practice
beyond statutory requirements.
Cris Tomos, Castle Interim Director says; ‘It is reassuring to be working alongside the award winning company in going forward to transform the ruins into a facili-ty for community and recreational use as well as for learning that will include conference and class rooms, the only permanent Eistedd-fod exhibition in the World as well as luxury accommodation, restau-rant and an open-air concert area.’ The work on the Castle will start on the 11th of February and the site is due to open in the Spring of 2014.

Archeoleg yng Nghastell
Aberteifi
Mae mwy na 7,000 o arteffactau wedi’u darganfod yn ystod cyfnod y cloddio archeolegol yn yr haf yng Nghastell Aberteifi.
Mae'r cloddio - a gynhaliwyd gan archeolegwyr proffesiynol o NPS Archaeoleg ynghyd â llu o wirfoddolwyr lleol - hefyd yn dangos olion canoloesol nad oedd yn amlwg tan nawr y tu mewn i'r castell, safle’r Eisteddfod gyntaf erioed yn 1176.
"Mae'r darganfyddiadau a gasglwyd yn ystod y gwaith cloddio yn ffurfio casgliad diddorol ac amrywiol. Er bod angen mwy o ymchwil ar yr holl eitemau, mae'n amlwg fod ganddynt lawer iawn i'w gyfrannu at hanes y safle," meddai archeolegydd, Rebecca Sillwood.
"Mae'r archif o ddarganfyddiadau yn gyswllt pendant gyda'r gorffennol ac yn y rhan fwyaf atgofus o'r bobl mae'n rhaid sydd wedi byw, gweithio a threulio amser hamdden yng Nghastell Aberteifi dros y canrifoedd."
Mae’r darganfyddiadau yn cynnwys:
• rhannau o ffrâm ffenestr carreg oes Elisabeth; poteli gwydr wedi’u cynhyrchu yn Aberteifi a Chaerfyrddin; • pibellau tybaco clai; • Dros 4,000 o ddarnau o grochenwaith yn amrywio o'r cyfnod canoloesol hyd at yr 20fed ganrif; Un darganfyddiad diddorol oedd palet cragen gymharol brin.
"Mae'n bosib mai clam yw’r gragen ac y mae’r darn wedi cadw sylwedd cochlyd. Mae angen dadansoddiad mwy manwl o'r gwrthrych, ond nid yw'n gyffredin dod o hyd i un o rain, mae enghreifftiau sydd wedi cael eu cloddio yn tueddu i fod yn gysylltiedig â safleoedd eglwysig canoloesol," ychwanegodd Rebecca.
Archaeology at
Cardigan Castle
More than 7,000 artefacts were un-earthed during the summer archaeo-logical dig at Cardigan Castle. The dig – which was carried out by profes-sional archaeologists from NPS Ar-chaeology plus scores of local volun-teers – also revealed previously un-known medieval remains inside the castle which was the site of Wales’ first ever eisteddfod in 1176. “The finds collected during the excavations form an interesting and varied assem-blage. Although more research is required on all the items, it is clear that they have a huge amount to con-tribute to the history of the site,” said archaeologist Rebecca Sillwood. “The finds archive is a tangible link with the past and is most evocative of the people who must have lived, worked and spent leisure time at Cardigan Castle over many centu-ries.” Finds include: • parts of an Elizabethan stone win-dow frame; • glass bottles manufac-tured in Cardigan and Carmarthen; • clay tobacco pipes; • Over 4,000 fragments of pottery ranging from the medieval period through to the 20th century; One interesting find was a relatively rare shell palette. “The shell is possibly a clam and the piece retains a large amount of a reddish pigment. More detailed analy-sis of this object is required, but it is not a common find and examples that have been excavated tend to be as-sociated with medieval ecclesiastical sites,” added Rebecca.
Rydym yn hapus iawn i gyhoeddi bod gennym aelod newydd o staff yn y Castell. Mae Michael White o Gilgerran wedi ymuno â'r tîm fel Cynorthwy-ydd yn yr ardd a Chymorth
Gweinyddol. Croeso mawr i’r tîm Michael!
We are very happy to announce that we have a new member of staff at the Castle. Michael White from Cilgerran has joined the team as an Assistant Gardener and Administrative Support. Welcome to the team Michael!
