Mrs Jenkins

Last Friday our school bid farewell to Mrs Jenkins as she is retiring to the green pastures of Adelaide. The students provided a special guard of honour including the traditional ringing of the school bell to herald the end of one’s time at Berry Public School. We wish Mrs Jenkins a wonderful retirement.

Staff Development Day

Our teachers spent the staff development day immersed in Focus on Reading Professional Development sessions led by Mr Sutton, Mrs Ingold and Mrs McAuliffe. Focus on reading includes professional reading, reflection and conversations about research validated teaching and learning methods that have a positive impact on reading.

The teachers also spent time in their teams collaborating on the development of term programs and assessment tasks.

Leading and Managing the School

As well as leading and managing our own school, the role of the Principal also involves broader system responsibilities within Regional and State Directorates, as well as the NSW Primary Principals’ Association.

Recent work has included:

- School Excellence Implementation Advisory Group – The School Excellence Framework is guiding school improvement processes in NSW Public Schools. An evidence guide is being developed to support schools to identify their performance against the framework. At a meeting in Sydney at the end of last

term my team reviewed the evidence guide presentation, content and case studies, and provided advice for the website.

- BOSTES review – The Minister for Education recently announced a review into the Board of Studies Teaching and Educational Standards. During the holidays I worked on the Primary Principals’ response with the President of the PPA and senior Executive.

- Principal Credential – From 2016 all aspiring Principals will be required to complete a Principal Credential Professional Learning Package relating to a number of key leadership and management roles relating to the job. During the holidays many of the PPA executive and chairpersons provided advice about the content of the credential materials, my homework focused on the policy implementation.

- Leading and Managing the School Policy- On Friday I attended a meeting with senior department executive, as well as Primary and Secondary Principal representatives to draft a new Leading and Managing the School Policy which aligns with the National AITSL Principal Standards.

- NAPLAN Online – Last week I was involved in discussions with ACARA, BOSTES and the Department about the implementation timelines, trials and infrastructure for NAPLAN online. An announcement is expected to be made by the minister soon.

News from Plant Prop One year on – revisiting the “Pizza trays”* *At Plant Prop, “ pizza” refers to a plant tray of mixed small native herbaceous plants, grasses and ground covers. Berry Public School Nursery has been the home for the small ground cover plants that were recovered in March 2015 from ‘Glenvale’ property, prior to the removal of the Blackbutt trees for the highway upgrade. The plants were dug up by volunteers to be cared for, unti l they can be replanted back onto land adjoining the highway after the road works are completed, to assist with quicker revegetation. The plants have not only recovered from the initial transplant shock of being dug up from the forest floor, but have flourished and needed to be divided. During the holidays, volunteers from Plant Prop and Landcare and a couple of children, spent a morning dividing the trays. 40 trays soon became 130 trays. We were very grateful for donations of planting trays and potting mix from Rob Vanini and Stan Heath. Rob said that his children had attended Plant Prop when they were at school and he was happy to support the nursery in this practical way, and Stan regularly supports the activities at the nursery. The motto at Plant Prop is “ Growing Plants - Growing Community” . The morning spent in the nursery was another opportunity to strengthen involvement with the school for the benefit of the community.
