OCTOBER 18th MEETING

GUEST PRESENTER — Natalie Schorr

Website: www.drawing.guru ♦ Email: [email protected]

BEST IN MIXED MEDIA

NCAA 13th Annual Member Juried Art Exhibit, 2018

Natalie Schorr is a 2017 transplant to Fayetteville GA, having most recently lived in rural North Carolina. She holds a BFA in Costume Design from the University of North Carolina Greensboro, and an MFA in Scene Design from Carnegie Mellon University.

Natalie spent 12 years working as an art director and set designer in motion pictures and television before leaving the business to raise her children. While her children were young, she drew and painted consistently, her work showing in local, national and international shows. In 1999, she added

printmaking to her skills, experimenting extensively with early photopolymers and other nontoxic methods. Over the past decade, she has incorporated a lot of recycled materials into her work, although she occasionally still draws on a clean piece of paper. The main themes of her work are portraiture, industrial landscapes, and iconography, her newest passion. She creates both 2D and 3D pieces and feels that solving design problems through multiple methods is the equivalent of creativity calisthenics. Natalie’s favorite question about her work is “What were you thinking?”, something her mother has been asking her for

almost 60 years now.

Suzanne Kleese-Stamps

Artist & Potter ♦ Indigo Pottery Studio

Thank you,

GENERAL MEETING MINUTES - SEPTEMBER 2018 A general meeting of the Newnan-Coweta Art Association (“NCAA”), was called to order by President Tammy Troyer at 7:28 pm, on Thursday, September 20, 2018, at the Harriet Alexander Art Center. President Troyer extended a warm welcome to members, new members, and guests. She thanked members Jenny Jones, Teresa Foshee, Gay Lindquist, Ronda Schwenning, and her-self for providing refreshments. The Door Prize drawing for a handmade soap dish ─ a pottery piece donated by guest presenter Suzanne Kleese-Stamps ─

was won by Angelia Martin. Suzanne Kleese-Stamps (Recording Secretary) reported that the minutes of August 2018 General Meeting were elec-tronically filed and published in the September 2018 news-letter. A correction to the May 2018 minutes was noted and published in the September newsletter. Fred Buyarski (Treasurer) reported NCAA account balances as follows:

Value Checking (PP/FB Trx) $ 750.42 Value Checking $ 3,294.37 Business Savings $ 6.19 Money Market $ 135,907.08

Total account balances $139,958.06. The Treasurer’s report was approved and filed.

(Minutes cont'd) Fred also reported that the $500 rental fee to use the Coweta County Fairgrounds indoor facility for the 2018 Christmas Arts & Crafts Market was paid on September 18th. Tammy Troyer and Fred Buyarski reported that they met with brokers from two investment firms in Newnan this summer (Travis Mowrey of Edward Jones, and Parks Avery, Jr. of Avery & Pope Wealth Management) to discuss investment options for up to $75K of the monies currently sitting in the Money Market not earning us any money. Both firms stated they can offer NCAA a safe yet diversified portfolio for long-term investing and options that suit our vision for the future sustainability of NCAA for the next 25 years yet give us the flexibility we desire. The Board will discuss and select one of these firms. Once a decision is made, Tammy will invite the broker to make a presentation to membership. We are seeking a portfolio that will give us a 5%-6% return on our investment. More information to follow. Fred Buyarski (Membership Chairman) reported a total of 152 members in good standing; 7 memberships are expired. Of those, 4 will be removed from the roster September 30th, and 3 will be removed October 31st if not renewed. Sponsorship — Teresa Foshee reported a total of 29 sponsors (12 patrons, 11 sponsors, and 6 supporters). Teresa reminded members that sponsorship packets are available, and she is happy to follow up on any leads from members. Website & Social Media — Suzanne Kleese-Stamps reported that as of September, the website has had 2,940 views with 1,238 followers (combined) on Facebook and Instagram. The Top 10 most visited sites include Membership, About Us, and Artists (Gallery). The new section of the website to publish classes offered by NCAA members is still under construction. Please send your class information to: [email protected] BUSINESS ITEMS:

was a success, and it was great to see so many businesses showcasing the works of NCAA and other local artists. Chelita Freeman, Karen DeFelix, Linda Newman, and Nancy Twomey. Detailed planning continues. We need members to assist with publicity by distributing postcards and flyers. Vendors will keep 100% of their own sales but Raffle ticket sales will help pay for the additional grid rental and a donation toward NCAA scholarships. 2018 Southern Hands Artist Studio Tour (SHAST) ─ November 10 (9am-5pm) and November 11 (11am-5pm) Suzanne Kleese-Stamps invited everyone to get a rare glimpse 'behind the scenes' of the creative process as you tour artist studios in Coweta and Fayette counties. Not every studio is the same; not every artistic approach is the same. But, they all have a couple of things in common - the fun and frustration of it all. Fourteen NCAA artists will join other artists on this year's Tour. The "open air" at 671 Adams Road, Fayetteville, will be the studio setting for the En Plein Air Event on November 10, featuring artists Lydia Ellis, Sandy Holcomb, and Ina Jones. For updates, visit www.shastour.com Commonwealth at Calumet, Painted Utility Box Covers ─ Let the painting begin! Jenny Jones stated that the Newnan Utilities electrical box painting project gets underway next week. Phase 1 includes four box covers that will be painted by artists Janet Burns, Karen DeFelix, Jenny Jones, and Richard Pierce. Wadsworth Show ─ The Wadsworth film documentary DVD is

available for purchase at general meetings, NCAA events, or by contacting Fred Buyarski [email protected]. Cost: $5.00 each Tommy Thompson Senior Center, Newnan ─ Chelita Freeman

reported that so far, she is the only artist volunteering at the Center. As previously reported, the Center is seeking artists who would volunteer their time to teach 60-90 minute classes during the week (between the hours of 10am-2pm) to its senior citizens. The Center will provide all artist supplies. Artists who are interested should contact: Ashley Albers at 770-683-8600

and also inform Chelita, Tammy, or Margo. Chelita will also coordinate art exhibits at the Centre for NCAA artists wishing to display their works at this venue. Thank you, Chelita, and NCAA, for bringing joy to seniors! Wadsworth Alley Beautification Project ─ In coordination with

Courtney Hardcourt (Main Street Newnan), NCAA has been asked to paint scenes (at specified locations within the alley) depicting chickens, in keeping with the Alley's history. Tammy reported that the painting project will begin on October 1st. All paint will be provided. Contact Tammy Troyer for more info. Ashley Park Mural ─ Tammy Troyer reported that the mural

Alan Jackson Gets New Mural in

His Georgia Hometown

There’s a “Small Town Southern Man” being painted on the side of the Redneck Gourmet building at 11 North Court

Square in downtown Newnan. Of course, the “man” is Newnan native and Country Music Hall of Fame member Alan Jackson, and the painter is Tim Davis, Newnan's

current artist in residence, who also painted the mural of 13 country stars on the side of Nashville's Legends Corner in 2016.

The mural wall and design were chosen by Alan’s manage-ment, fan club, and the artist-in-residence program. Tim began working on the 20 ft x 40 ft mural on Sept. 29 and completed it this week. “I feel very privileged to have been asked to paint this mural for Mr. Jackson and the city of Newnan,” says Tim. “The residents are wonderful people, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Many people here have been following the progress and can attest that it has gone up without a hitch.” BEFORE

AFTER

"We expect this to be our most popular mural."

~Robert Hancock (ArtRez Board Member) Alan Jackson and his wife both grew up in Newnan and have siblings and other relatives living in Coweta County.
