WHEN TO BOOK

02

Page 5: Newborn Maternity

I’m able to schedule your session throughout the week and ideally we’ll be shooting in the evening or early morning. The best light is at sunrise & two hours before sunset!

As early as a sunrise session sounds (and totally is), I promise, the light is perfect. Sometimes there’s an early morning fog, and if it’s a mid-summer session, it’s a perfect way to beat the heat.

While it’s not always possible to schedule in the early morning or evening, the sidewalks are always a little more cleared out, parks are usually emptier, and the lighting in your home is usually softer.

For maternity photos it is usually a safe bet to schedule your photos a month ahead of your due date. This will keep me from having to bust out my nursing skills and de-liver your child. Neither of us want that :)

For newborn sessions it is best to plan for a date 7-12 days after delivery. This allows for maximum cuteness and sleepiness.

In the end, none of these are hard fast rules. This season of life can be exciting but also stressful, I know this first hand and will do my best to make this process smooth sailing. Send along along several dates too me and I will be in touch.

ad of changes happening to your body.

Go ahead and think through any props you may want, whether thats ultrasound pictures, a stuffed ani-mal, books, or family heirlooms.

MATERNITY

Maternity sessions are typically all about mom. This is totally ap-propriate, even though it took two to tango go get this far, dad is not prego (thank the Lord for that).

However, whenever possible I like to shoot maternity photos as if it is the last hoorah for mom and dad before their worlds are changed (for the better) forever. Children are the culmination of the love shared between two individuals,

and it is my goal to capture that re-lationship.

You can think of maternity photos as an engagement session where the focus has shifted from the rings to the baby bump, and the excite-ment is three times greater.

My goal is for mom to be as re-laxed as possible. Be comfortable in your skin and know that you truly do look beautiful despite the myri-

Location, location, location. Where you shoot your photos is pretty im-portant. The goal is to shoot some-where that is unique to you. The eas-iest place to capture this for newborn shoots in the home. It is your natural environment, where you are most comfortable, and the place we will do 99.9% of our newborn photos.

Our maternity session is a whole dif-ferent ball game. Although it is great to capture a few shots of you in the nursery, the more unique shots come outside the home. It’s impor-tant to choose locations that we can make our own. Remember the idea of treating maternity sessions as a celebration of the love between you and your husband? Let’s pick some places that bring memories back of

everything that lead to this point.

Did you used to go to a local cafe together? Let’s shoot there. Is there a particular park you enjoy walking together? A late night ice cream run localtion? Where you first kissed? You get the idea.

Ideally we will be able to visit a few locations during our shoot. Choos-

ing two or three different locations that are within walking distance of eachother or of parking is ideal. We don’t want to wear you out hiking all over creation.

If we do choose to stay in once place it may be helpful to do it in a way that shakes things up. The couple in the photos above asked us to do their maternity photos while picking

low through. In the end the photos will feature you, and even though it’s nice to have a great backdrop we will make do with wherever we end up. Many of the photos you see through-out this booklet were taken within walking distance of their homes. So we’ll make whatever location we choose work for us, and not against us.

LOCATION

out their Christmas tree, which is a family tradition they had started. It offered variety even though the scenery didn’t change and kept them engaged with eachother and us through a two hour shoot.

If you are finding the task of choos-ing a location daunting just leave it up to me. Let me know the type of photos you are going for and I’ll fol-

NEWBORN

I love doing newborn photos. They change everytime and are easily the most difficult portrait sessions I shoot. The newborn dictates a lot for these sessions. Because of this I usually plan 2-3hrs of time and am not concerned if we go over.

To prepare for the session it is best to start about 30min after a feed-ing. This allows them time to get their burps and spit-ups out. They should also be more calm and will-ing to be held and moved about without a fuss.

Make sure to change the diaper before we start to maximize baby’s comfort. If we are planning to do any nakey photos, which I totally encourage, we will want to make sure their room is nice and toasty. I will bring along a small space heat-er if you do not have one.

The goal for newborn photos is to capture your new family in their natural environment. Be prepared to get in front of the camera. And the best way to prep is to relax. Trust me as your photographer, I

won’t make you do something with-out a reason. And as much as you might not feel like getting in front of the camera, you’ll remember these photos of you and your little for the rest of your life.

WHAT TO WEAR

18

Page 21: Newborn Maternity

Like the location, your outfits should also be a reflection of you. You’ll want to keep the location in mind when you’re planning your session wardrobe.

Primary and secondary colors play a huge part in my photogra-phy. A touch of red, yellow, or blue can make any ensemble pop and help you stand out from the back-ground. Even adding a pair of red or yellow shoes, tights, or a bright blue tie will transform your outfits.

Take this as your excuse to buy that dress from Free People you’ve been eyeing and to break out the shoes you look amazing in and just had to buy. Wear shoes that you feel comfortable walking in, and don’t be afraid to kick them off (if its warm enough) during the shoot.

Try including some accessories – a simple necklace, floppy rimmed hat, bright socks, a pop-of-color belt, a scarf, a set of bracelets, or add some layers that make your look just a little more stylish.

For the guys a great, fitted but-ton up shirt is fine, but see if he’s comfortable in a chambray shirt, suspenders or a tie, and have him roll his sleeves up for part of the session for something a little more casual (or bring a blazer for a more dressed up look).

Complimenting accessories are important as they’re a perfect way to bring your outfits together. Think about colors that go well together, but please try to avoid matching. Dress as though you are attend-

ing the same event; if one of you is dressed for a date at a coffee shop or if you’re planning to go barefoot in a field, match each other accord-ingly.

Avoid baggy button down shirts, light denim, polos, tennis shoes and sneakers, and logo shirts. There are always exceptions to the rules, but one rule I must insist on - if your shirt has more tattoos than you do, please leave it at home. Also, try to avoid any clothing that may show unintentionally visible bra straps, tags, or semi-transpar-ent clothing that could reveal un-dergarments.

During the session, plan on only carrying the bare minimum – if you can, leave purses, bags, cell phones, etc in your car or I can carry them for you.

Remember - confidence is every-thing in photographs. What you choose to wear should be some-thing you feel comfortable in, something that compliments your physical features, your individual-ity, something you can move in, and something that makes you feel amazing.

Being dolled up helps you feel a little more ready to be photo-graphed. Go ahead and give your lashes, brows, and eye make up a little extra attention before the ses-sion.

For the newborn shots, dress them in a simple one or two-toned onesie. If they have an outfit that you abso-lutely love we can do a few shots in it, but the hope is to capture them with as little distraction as possible. For yourself, dress down. A simple pair of flowing pajama pants and a relaxed fitting tee helps to keep you at ease and looking comfy. For dad, a pair of solid-color sweats and a simple t-shirt go a long way. Lastly, rules were meant to be broken. I truly trust your personal style and I know I’ll love what you choose, but I encourage bring-ing along an extra outfit or two for each of you in case one gets dirty, if we have time to change during the session; or if you’d just like a second opinion before we start the session.

If you have any questions as you’re planning for your session, please don’t hesitate to ask and I look for-ward to photographing you soon!

This booklet was written to give a few tips to help plan for our session together, but it’s in no way a rule book. It’s just a few pointers to help guide you in the right direction to make sure you’re ready for the camera.

When it gets right down to it, this is YOUR session. Make it personal, make it about you, and have fun!
