The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, & Joseph December 29, 2013 HOLY FAMILY Feast December 29 th Put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. (Colossians 3:14) Born “on the road” and raised in a humble home in Nazareth, Jesus is intimately connected to family life. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, he wants to live in our families, giving us the grace we need to reflect his love to each other. The more we invite Christ into our homes through family prayer and Scripture reading, times of recreation together, and an atmosphere of love and acceptance, the more we will be able to live out these inspired words. In his Letter to Families (February 2, 1994) Pope John Paul II commented on the role of simple family life in God’s plan of salvation: The family has its origins in that same love with which the Creator embraces the created world…We know that the Redeemer spent most of his life in the obscurity of Nazareth, “obedient” as the “Son of Man” to Mary his Mother, and to Joseph the carpenter. Is this filial “obedience” of Christ not already the first expression of that obedience to the Father “unto death” whereby he redeemed the world? (Letter to Families, 2) Like all families, and more keenly than most, the Holy Family experienced trials and needed to rely continually on God’s love and providence. When Simeon prophesied that a sword would pierce her heart (Luke 2:29-35), Mary could only guess at the suffering her family would endure. Yet she and Joseph continued to be open to God’s will for them, faithfully carrying out the duties entrusted to them. These duties were most often the small, humble tasks required of any parent: comforting and caring for a child who has a skinned knee, cooking and cleaning, teaching him to pray. Simple acts though they were, they were all done for God’s glory. In the same way, we can serve our families by immersing ourselves in Christ and seeking to love them as if we were loving him. Think of the routine but necessary duties you perform for your family. How often do you consider these duties as acts of love? As you go about your chores over the next few days, think of how much you love the family members you are serving. Think of yourself as building God’s kingdom and bringing him glory, even in the smallest and humblest of tasks. Lord, help us to reflect your sacrificial love to our families. By your Spirit, transform our family into a reflection of your love. New Year’s Eve 5pm Vigil. New Year’s Day 10am There will be NO Masses January 2-3 rd . January 1: Mary, Mother of God

When we celebrate this feast, we honor not only

Mary but Jesus, true God and true man. We proclaim

the glorious truth that in Mary’s womb the Second

Person of the Trinity united himself completely with

our humanity.

Because the Son of God took flesh in Mary’s

womb, we too can share in these glorious blessings.

We have been baptized into Christ; we have a share

in his humanity. We are heirs of the blessings that

God gave to Israel and in a particular way to Mary,

the beloved Daughter of Zion.

Like Mary, we can walk confidently in the

blessing and peace of the Lord. The Son of God, who

left his throne to become one like us, has conquered

sin and death for all of us. Each day, we can freely

receive the life of Jesus into our hearts simply by

responding ‘yes’ to the Lord’s call, just as Mary did.

By Jesus’ sanctifying blood, we have been made

vessels of the Holy Spirit, enabling us to cry out

“Abba! Father!” as true sons and daughters of God

(Galatians 4:6-7). The Lord is not far off, but very

near; indeed he dwells within us through his Holy

Spirit. Let us turn to him and allow his blessing,

grace, and mercy shine upon us.
