17. Summary

• The population of PEI increased by 1534 persons (1.1%) from 2008, and this was the highest annual rate of growth for PEI since 1984. This annual rate of growth was just slightly lower than the national average of 1.2%.

• PEI has experienced continuous population growth since 1999, except in 2006 where there was an annual change decrease of 0.1%.

• PEI has experienced positive Net International Migration (Note: Missing Net International Migration data for 1997, 2004, 2005, 2006, and information reads from 1993), while experiencing negative Net Inter-provincial Migration since 2004.

• There are more females than males in all PEI population broad age groupings since 2007, except for the 0-14 age group. Females out-number males in the 15-49, 50-64, and 65plus age groups.

• Protestants and Catholics have the highest representation for Religion in PEI, making up for more than 90% of PEI population.

• Preliminary data shows that an approx. 1793 immigrants chose PEI as their new home in 2008/09, while 37 immigrants left PEI resulting in a new high of 1715 for Net International Migration in PEI.

• Ontario, Alberta and Nova Scotia are the top destinations for Islanders leaving the province, with all three provinces making up for 67.2% of Islanders leaving PEI (Note: 2008/09).
