KEY FOR SUCCESS - CONTINUE YOUR
ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
Students from language backgrounds other than
English are admitted to DePauw with the
understanding that they are still developing their
English language proficiency, a process that will last a
lifetime. To aid in this process, and to provide support
with academic English in particular, DePauw offers
two courses, Academic English Seminar I and II,
which are designed for newly matriculated students in
DePauw’s TOEFL score acceptance range.
English 110 (Academic English Seminar I) This course provides an introduction to academic
reading, writing, speaking, listening, and
vocabulary, and allows students to develop their
fluency and accuracy in all areas.
English 115 (Academic English Seminar II) English
115 focuses more exclusively on academic writing,
including academic integrity, citation, research, and
the writing process. Each course carries one credit.
Depending on a variety of factors, including test scores
and other admission materials, students may be placed
into one of these courses during the course
selection process; once on campus, all
international students will take a writing
assessment to assist with this placement.
In some cases, this may require students to adjust
their schedule in order to make room for English 110
or 115. The following points may provide helpful
context in understanding the importance English 110
and 115:
The type of English necessary for standardized
tests such as TOEFL and SAT is quite different
from the English necessary to study at a small
liberal arts college.
Even native English speakers find the transition from
high school to college challenging in terms of
academic expectations. English 110 and 115 establish
a strong foundation for other coursework, encourage
awareness of aspects of English that require
additional work, and connect students to systems of
valuable academic support.
The ability to speak and write effectively in English
enhances students’ options in a variety of areas,
including academics, internships, graduate school,
and career opportunities.

IMMIGRATION IN
THE UNITED STATES
US IMMIGRATION
REGULATIONS
It is highly important that you take immigration rules and procedures seriously. Your I-20 Certificate of Eligibility (for F-1 four-year degree-seeking students) or DS-2019 Certificate of Eligibility (for Exchange Students) immigration document, is a student immigration document issued by DePauw University, with authorization from the United States Department of Homeland Security, that allows you to apply for a student visa for entry to the United States.
Each immigration category (e.g., F1 or J1) has very specific rules about what your purpose will be in the United States and what you are allowed to do when inside the United States. You need to inform yourself about the rules and requirements for your student immigration category. ISS Office is here to help you navigate these rules.
VIOLATING STUDENT IMMIGRATION RULES CAN RESULT IN THE TERMINATION OF YOUR ACADEMIC PROGRAM AND
DEPARTURE FROM THE UNITED STATES. BE SURE TO INFORM YOURSELF!
APPLYING FOR AN F-1 OR J-1 STUDENT VISA
Your I-20 or DS-2019 Certificate of Eligibility immigration document provides you with a Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) identification number. With this number, you can pay the I-901 SEVIS administrative fee of $350 ($220 for Exchange Students) and schedule a visa interview appointment at the US Embassy or Consulate nearest to you. You can find detailed instructions and helpful links in the “Visas and Travel” section of the ISS website. Please visit this page to begin the visa application process.
Be sure to sign and date your I-20 or DS-2019 immigration document, and keep this and your I-901 SEVIS fee payment receipt with you when you travel to the United States. You must present these documents to the US Customs and Border Protection officers upon arrival. Do not pack your immigration document or I-901 receipt in your checked luggage.
Canadian citizens please refer to the
last page of this guide for a special immigration note.

tuition and student fees at the beginning of each
semester. The Fall 2020 tuition and fees will be

that you might want to purchase in the days in USA.
However, we recommend for your safety that you
avoid bringing large amounts of cash as you travel
to the United States. You will have the opportunity to
open a bank account during your first days on
campus. Visa, MasterCard and other major credit
cards are another safe way to pay for expenses.

HEALTH INSURANCE AND STUDENT IMMUNIZATION
DOCUMENTATION
HEALTH INSURANCE
DePauw international students are required to maintain
valid health insurance coverage at all times. The
University maintains this policy for students’ personal
and financial protection, as well as to comply with the
US government requirements.
You will be automatically enrolled (participation is
compulsory) in DePauw’s group insurance plan, which
provides year-round coverage for medical needs and
emergencies anywhere in the world, except in your
home country. For information on applying for a waiver
of required participation in DePauw's group insurance
plan and information about health resources available
on campus and in Greencastle, visit:
https://www.depauw.edu/studentacademiclife/cdi/intern
ationalstudents/health-resources-insurance-
requirements/
The cost for international student insurance coverage
for the 2020-2021 academic year will be approximately
$1,600 and covers from August 1, 2020, through July
31, 2021. DePauw pays for all student insurance in
advance to ensure continuous insurance coverage
The insurance fee will be reflected on your July bill.
International students are automatically enrolled in the
insurance policy unless a waiver, demonstrating
comparable coverage through another source, is
provided at www.eiia.org/institution/depauw-university
by September 1.
IMMUNIZATIONS & IMMUNIZATION RECORDS
All new first year students and transfer students must
submit their immunization information through
Med+Proctor (www.medproctor.com) by July 1 for fall
semester entry, January 2 for winter term entry and
January 15 for spring term entry. Students may opt-out
of providing this information or completing all of the
immunizations for medical and/or religious
reasons. Students must establish an account on
Med+Proctor and upload all immunization records to
Med+Proctor. DePauw requires the following
vaccinations: two measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), two
meningococcal including one after 16th birthday,
completed hepatitis B series (three vaccinations), one
tetanus booster (TDaP) within 10 years of enrolment,
two varicella and Tuberculosis testing.
If a student does not provide their immunization records
or are not in compliance with state standards, a
registration hold will be placed on the student's account
for the following academic semester. In the event, there
is an outbreak of a medical condition on campus for
which there is a documented immunization (i.e.
mumps), students who are not immunized or under-
immunized will be asked to leave campus and/or
quarantined from other students until our Medical
Director has determined that the threat of illness has
passed. This is common and consistent with how other
campuses manage non-immunized populations.
TRAVEL AND IMMIGRATION RULES NOTE TO CANADIAN STUDENTS
Degree-Seeking Canadian students like all international students must enter the United states in F1 student
immigration status and take active steps to maintain valid immigration status throughout their academic program at
DePauw. Canadian students must ensure that their passport and I-20 are valid at all times, receive travel
endorsements on the I-20 Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status from a DePauw DSO
authorizing them to leave the USA, register each semester with the ISS Office, discuss any planned on-campus
employment before the start date, and apply for special employment authorization through ISS prior to any
internship or other practical training.
Unlike other international students, Canadian students studying in the United States are not required to apply for a
visa at a US Embassy or Consulate in order to enter in F-1 student immigration status.
When arriving to the US to begin your academic program at DePauw, be sure that you show the US Customs and
Border Protection officer who reviews your passport your I-20 Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student
Status. Serious complications can arise if you are admitted to the USA in tourist status.
BREAK PERIODS, TRAVEL AND HOUSING CALENDAR
You are expected to be on campus during all orientation
programs, regular class days and final examination
periods. Before making flight reservations, be sure that you
refer to DePauw’s posted Academic Calendar, available at
https://www.depauw.edu/academics/academic-
resources/advising/registrar/academic-calendar/ in order stay
in good academic and immigration status. University residence halls and University-owned apartments
and houses are open year round for students enrolled in
classes in the current term, except during the Winter Break
period. ISS staff coordinate housing for international students
who wish to stay on campus during Winter Break.
All University housing is open during Fall Break, Thanksgiving
Break and Spring Break for students who follow the registration
procedure with Housing and Residence Life Office put in place
for safety reasons. You must be enrolled in a Winter Term course in order to
stay in your University owned housing during Winter Term.
