From the Chancellor As we enter a new year at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, activity, energy, excitement and change abound.

When I arrived on this campus nearly seven years ago, it didn’t take me long to realize the amount of history and tradition that characterize this School and its people, a rare feat for a 27-year-old institution. Each day I am here, however, I

see more clearly how NCSSM’s creative, adept and inquisitive students, faculty and staff are able to make history on a daily basis. The School is a kaleidoscope of opportunity, where diversity, tradition and, yes, change come together to create an environment of challenge and hope.

Throughout the years, the principles that make NCSSM so strong have remained constant despite many physical changes on campus. Our students have always embraced change, while remaining loyal to the founding ideas and defining characteristics that embody the NCSSM experience. Our people understand what the Dalai Lama meant when he said, “Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.” I am delighted to present to you NCSSM’s winter magazine, outlining and highlighting the changing faces of the School. From the restoration of Watts’ cupola to becoming the 17th constituent institution of the University of North Carolina system, positive changes are happening.

NCSSM’s greatest strength is its ability to assess the needs of its constituency in an ever-changing world. Because of the courage and foresight of faculty and staff, alumni and parents, trustees and friends, NCSSM is positioned to make changes when necessary in moving forward, to assure that today’s traditions of excellence will continue to grow. The face of NCSSM is changing, and what an exciting thing to be a part of.

ChangingFace

After 27 years on the historic Watts campus, change is in the air at NCSSM

The

of NCSSM

The days of walking to E.K. Powe for meals have long been gone at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. From the construction of new dorms to the renovation of Bryan, the School has seen a lot of change over the years. But no matter how much the campus evolves, the heart of this great institution remains the same.

Over the last few years, much change has again taken place on the historic Watts campus, which will soon celebrate its 100th anniversary. Our students can now play tennis in their own backyard. Soon, there will be a place for our students and the community to run. And we will soon become an official member of the University of North Carolina family. Even Watts itself has gotten a facelift. Indeed, change is in the air.

And yet, each change on campus serves to remind us of how this experiment got started and how with each passing year, the heart and soul of NCSSM remain constant from generation to generation of her students.

The Class of ’84 serves NCSSM on-campus tennis courtsLike many additions to campus, the tennis courts, which opened for students last school year, were a gift from one of our generous alumni classes. As part of its 20th reunion, the Class of 1984 chose to commemorate the success of NCSSM athletics by donating nearly $100,000 to fund the construction of on-campus tennis courts.

During their years at Science and Math, members of the Class of ’84 placed a particular importance on athletics in making the NCSSM experience complete. Despite the School’s reputation as an academic leader in the state and the nation, the class continued to push for an increased presence of athletic teams and opportunities. Though the facilities were limited and scheduling was difficult, the class implemented a number of new interscholastic teams.

In fact, the 1983-84 tennis team, still in its infancy, captured its first winning season

Watts, the historic Durham landmark and a focal point on the NCSSM campus, was given a fresh look in the summer

of 2006. The restoration project, which included cleaning and painting the

exterior, makes it a fitting partner to the newly restored cupola.

and sent the doubles team to the sectional semifinals.

Now, after less than two years on campus, the Class of ’84 tennis courts have provided NCSSM students with opportunities for practice and play, allowing for athletics to continue to be an integral part of the day-to-day life on campus. Our ladies doubles team even took the state title this past fall.

Like all athletic facilities on campus, the tennis courts serve to help our student-athletes reach their full potential as they dedicate themselves

to remain as sharp on the courts as they are in the classroom.

Kicking ‘away games’ goodbyeJust as the tennis courts have found a place on Maryland Avenue, another athletic playing field is gearing up to take root on the opposite side of campus. On the corner of Sprunt and Broad streets, the track and soccer field is in its building stages, promising NCSSM athletes yet another chance to hold games on their own turf. Funded by the NCSSM Foundation, the new lighted track and soccer field should be ready to run by the beginning of next school year.

For over 27 years, our track team has been unable to practice or hold meets on its own campus and our soccer team has only been able to play on campus before dark. Currently, the track team travels to Durham’s Riverside High School for practice and the soccer team plays all evening games off-campus. But despite these inconvenient circumstances, our students have had much success, most recently with our men’s soccer team going all the way to the state semifinals and our men’s cross country team winning the state title this year, making it all the more exciting that these student-athletes will now have more resources at their disposal.

The lights for the field should go up in the spring and, from there, it’s only a matter of time before the track and field are ready for play.

A beloved part of campus gets a makeoverNew facilities on campus are not the only kind

In Focus: Mary Duke Biddle Foundation

It may be surprising to some to learn that a school of science and mathematics also provides an impressive fine arts curriculum. But for those individuals and organizations that truly understand the value of the arts, it is no surprise at all.

Long known as a champion of the arts throughout North Carolina, the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation awarded NCSSM a 2005-2006 grant in support of the School’s first-ever fine arts celebration. Called the Mary Duke

Biddle Fine Arts Weekend, and hosted in the spring of 2006, the weekend was a tremendous success, with nearly 600 people coming to campus for performances by NCSSM alumni and former faculty, current NCSSM musicians, and local talent.

Since the School’s inception, fine arts have been a vital part of the NCSSM experience. For some students, the arts curriculum is the antithesis of the science and mathematics courses,

offering them the opportunity to challenge themselves in an entirely different way. Some students find a therapeutic value in artistic expression. Still others combine the arts and sciences, fusing the analytic and the artistic into one. Regardless of the motivation, NCSSM encourages every student to explore the arts. With the support of organizations such as the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, the arts at NCSSM, and throughout North Carolina, will continue to flourish.

The tennis courts, which opened for students last school year, were a gift from one of our generous alumni classes. As part of its 20th reunion, the Class of 1984 chose to commemorate the success of NCSSM athletics by donating nearly $100,000 to fund the construction of on-campus tennis courts.

WINTER 2007

Through the generosity of the Class of 1985, the cupola was restored last winter in honor of faculty member Joe Liles. The project took about three months to complete.

“I have always been attracted to that Cupola. It symbolizes

the human desire to reach out into the world for help from

something greater than ourselves.”

Joe Liles

of change NCSSM is experiencing. In addition, old facilities are being given new life. Last year, both the face of Watts Hospital and the beloved cupola that crowns the historic building received facelifts.

Thanks to the generosity of the Class of 1985, the cupola was restored last winter in honor of founding faculty member Joe Liles. The restoration, which was a part of the class’s 20th reunion gift, took about three months to complete, beginning in November 2005 and continuing through January 2006. Fifty-thousand dollars of the class’s reunion gift went toward the project.

The much-needed restoration involved more than just a fresh coat of paint. In fact, the project was quite complicated, involving the replacing of original wood at the base of the structure and the scraping clean of old, flaking paint. Because the cupola sits atop a severe slope, an elaborate scaffolding system was erected around the structure. Especially challenging was the presence of lead-based paint in the original, underlying coats. Significant steps were taken to safely remove and dispose of the paint. A plastic sheathing containment area was even constructed around the cupola.

But the Class of ’85 was committed to restoring the cupola to its original aesthetic. Despite the challenges that threatened the cupola’s full restoration, the class felt it was time for

NCSSM’s official logo and the most recognized architectural feature on campus to be given new life. Indeed, the cupola has guarded Watts for nearly 100 years, enduring wind, rain, sun and snow as it has watched generations of North Carolinians pass below.

After the work was complete and the scaffolding system dismantled, the cupola was unveiled, brighter than any NCSSM student had seen it. Now the cupola is ready to guard Watts for another 100 years as it watches not just North Carolinians, but the state’s brightest and most motivated walk below, a true testament to an NCSSM faculty member who, like the cupola, has been a steady presence at the School.

Founding faculty member Joe Liles, featured in the Winter/Spring 2006 alumni magazine as one of the School’s “Abiders,” has touched the lives and hearts of countless students at NCSSM. The School and, particularly, the cupola have touched Joe as well. “I have always been attracted to that cupola,” Joe said. “To me, it’s

Page 8: NCSSM Magazine Volume 8

like a secular steeple. It symbolizes the human desire to reach out into the world for help from something greater than ourselves. The cupola served as a symbol to [the employees and patients of Watts Hospital] in the daily work of mending and saving lives. It symbolizes our daily work of educating young people.”

Robert Winters, chair of the Class of ’85 reunion committee, echoed Joe’s sentiment.

“We hope the restored cupola serves as both a token of our appreciation for Joe’s long service to NCSSM and a symbol of the School’s continued lofty vision and success for the years ahead.”

After the cupola’s renovations were finished, it only seemed fitting that Watts Hospital would follow suit. Beginning in the summer of 2006, the state funded an entire exterior renovation of Watts Hospital. From power-washing to painting, the historic Durham landmark was given a fresh look, making it a fitting partner to the newly restored cupola.

Now, as the Watts Hospital building nears its 100th anniversary, the hospital and her cupola continue to give testament to North Carolina’s commitment to service and to stand as the fresh face of the NCSSM campus and way of life.

All in the familyArguably the most significant change NCSSM will undergo this year will take place this summer, with preparations are already under way. On July 1, 2007, the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics will become the 17th constituent institution of the University of North Carolina system, now under the leadership of President Erskine Bowles.

President Bowles was inaugurated as president of the UNC system in April 2006 and quickly made an offer to NCSSM for the School to become the first high school in North Carolina’s public, multi-campus university system dedicated to the service of North Carolina and its people. Since NCSSM’s inception over 27 years ago, it has been an affiliate of the system. After the School’s board of trustees discussed Bowles’ offer, the board voted unanimously to accept.

NCSSM’s mission seemed to align well with UNC’s mission to “discover, create, transmit and apply knowledge to address the needs of individuals and society,” something the system aims to accomplish through instruction, research, scholarship, creative activities and public service. In addition, NCSSM’s mission seemed to align well with President Bowles’ commitment to bolstering kindergarten through grade 12 science and math education in North Carolina and to furthering the advancement of technology throughout the state.

In preparation for the transition to becoming an official member of the family, members of the administration and faculty at NCSSM are spending countless hours poring over UNC bylaws and regulations. For example, one regulation of the system is that all constituent institution heads carry the title of “chancellor,” reserving the title of “president” for the UNC system president. To align with that regulation, NCSSM President Gerald Boarman is now Chancellor Boarman and the School’s vice presidents are now officially vice chancellors.

The regulation is just one small example of the changes that will be taking place here on campus as we move to solidifying our relationship with the University of North Carolina and to joining arms with the other 16 campuses in furthering and improving education in the state.

As you can see, the face of NCSSM is changing. But as the adage goes, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” This great experiment in education is still, at its core, the same place it has always been — a place where students come to get the best high school education in the state; a place where high school juniors and seniors meet friends and build lifelong relationships; a place where living and learning is a way of life and accepting the greater challenge is second nature; a place where, in the words of NCSSM mathematics instructor Dan Teague, “learning is not just hands-on, it’s minds-on.” No matter how many renovations take place, how many buildings are erected, how many titles are changed, this is still your school. Your alma mater. Your home.

And that is, indeed, what makes this place great.

T he main character in a classic children’s book refuses a kind offer of food because he’s sure he won’t like it. His friend repeats the offer only to be rebuffed time and

time again. When he finally agrees to a small nibble, he finds that he really enjoys emerald colored breakfast food. This willingness to take a risk or try something new strikes a chord with students and alumni of the University of North Carolina system’s only high school. “What makes North Carolina School of Science and Math unique? The fact that we are given the chance to make mistakes, without being in fear of making them,” says a recent graduate

in a letter from Dr. Gerald Boarman, president of the school, on its Web site. That sentiment is common among alumni of the school, both recent graduates and members of some of the first classes from the early 1980s. “The school attracts students who are very, very bright,” says Therese Taxis, director of alumni affairs at the school for the last thirteen years. “What sets them apart is that they are risk-takers.” “Everyone was encouraged to ask questions and think without boundaries … to create without fear,” remembers Beverly Murray, a member of the school’s first graduating class. The school — which recently graduated its 25th class — opened in 1980 in Durham for academically talented students in grades 11 and 12 who show special promise or interest in science and math. There are more than 600 students, all of whom are required to live on campus. NCSSM was the first state-supported residential high school in the country to focus on science and math. Since its beginning, 12 more have opened. Alumni from the school excel in many fields in North Carolina and around the country.

CLASS oF 1982

Beverly Murray grew up knowing she wanted to be a doctor. She devoured science classes all through school and told anyone who would listen about her plans to be a doctor. She was a natural for the school and was a member of the first graduating class. “I can sum up the environment at the North Carolina School of Science and Math in one word — stimulating,” Murray shares. “In our business, we say if you’re doing it right, your brain should sweat. NCSSM made our brains sweat.” Her plan was to be a pediatric surgeon. She enjoyed the science classes at the school and had a mentorship with a surgeon at Duke Pediatric Pulmonary Functions unit. But while at the school, she learned to look at things in new ways. “The biggest thing was that we were comfortable asking questions,” she explains. The pace of the work and the talents of her classmates also gave her pause. “When we got to the school, all the classes were advanced level,” she said. “It was quite a shock to the system.” Rather than stoking competitive fires, the pace was inspiring. “Others pushed so you pushed,” she adds. After graduation she attended Wake Forest University majoring in, you guessed it, pre-med. She spent two years there before transferring to North Carolina State University to major in environmental design. “I’ve had a lifelong passion for really understanding how our bodies work,” she explains. “I had been on my way to becoming a pediatric surgeon since junior high school, but the mentorship gave me an idea of the emotional cost of working with sick children. My experience at NCSSM gave me the confidence to question even my own ideas, and that’s why I figured out that I could apply that passion in other ways besides medicine.” Changing her career goal from medicine to visual design required a tremendous leap of faith. Her experience at NCSSM helped her have the courage to take that leap. “I wouldn’t have made that change unless I’d gone to the School.”

“As a legacy from the School, the willingness to question, take risks and look at things differently is evident in a number of ways among the alumni.”

“In our business, we say if you’re doing it right, your brain

should sweat. NCSSM made our brains sweat.”

Medical: Dr. Saralyn Reid Williams, Associate Professor of Medicine,

Vanderbilt university and Emergency Room Physician:

Class of 1982

Unlike Murray, Dr. Saralyn Reid Williams arrived at NCSSM without a definite career goal in mind. In fact, she wasn’t sure she could keep up.

“I was put in a remedial Biology class in 10th grade at my high school in Gastonia,” she says. “The teachers and counselors kind of discouraged me from taking science classes. They wanted me to take typing and classes like that so I could get a job as a secretary.”

She was excited and a little nervous to be accepted at the school, but the classes were a struggle at first. “It was clear to me early on that I didn’t have the skill sets to compete at the school, and I didn’t have a lot of confidence,” she remembers. But in her classes she was encouraged to stretch herself and take chances … to look at things differently. In one class the teacher did not assign homework. The students had to take responsibility for their own learning. Another instructor pushed her in a biology class. Williams and Murray were roommates during their senior year. While Murray was learning to question things in a way that would ultimately lead her away from a career in medicine, Williams — the nervous teenager from Gastonia — gained the confidence to pursue a medical career.

“I learned to take charge of my

own destiny,” Williams said. “I got the confidence to keep moving forward, to try new things. Before I went there, I thought I might be able to go to junior college if I worked very, very hard.” After graduation, Williams earned a full scholarship to Erskine College in South Carolina where she majored in Biology. She attended medical school at Duke University, did her internship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her residency and a fellowship at the University of California-San Diego. In her role as a teacher she tries to impart many of the lessons learned at NCSSM. “I want to teach people how to think, not to memorize. You can get facts from a book or the computer,” she says. “I want you to learn how to think. No one can take that away from you.”

Finance: Henry Kuo, Financial Advisor, AXA Advisors:

Class of 1982

Henry Kuo, another member of that first class, remembers the decision to attend NCSSM itself as quite a risk at the time. “We didn’t know what the school would be like, the classes, the social life, or anything,” explains Kuo, who is originally from Lumberton. “It was exciting, but it was frightening, too.” He remembers arriving at the school with many of the dorms and classrooms still under construction. “But that really didn’t matter to us,” he adds. “In fact, it actually made us focus.”

All of the teachers made an impact on students by making the classes more interesting and challenging than the students were used to. They encouraged students to take risks with projects and to push the bounds of each class. Despite his record of excelling at math and science, Kuo recalls a mechanical drawing class and a physics class that helped steer him toward a career in engineering (he attended N.C. State where he earned a degree in electrical engineering). The school also provided other ways to grow and develop initiative and leadership skills. The students were encouraged to form clubs and organize activities. “That was another confidence booster for me,” Kuo insists. The rigor in the classroom paid off when he got to college and saw his classmates go through a significant adjustment to the academic pace. “Our transition to college was seamless,” he says. After working in the engineering field for several years, Kuo went back to school at Duke for an MBA. That led him to investment management and his current position as senior vice president for AXA Advisors. He made that leap with little trepidation thanks to his education at NCSSM. “Almost every part of my career progression — from changing companies, jobs, even career field — has involved some form of risk,” he said. “I considered each one carefully ahead of time, but I was never afraid to take those risks.”

Technology: Scott ogle, Chief Operating Officer, Sageworks:

Class of 1993

The strongest memory of the school for Scott Ogle, the chief operating officer for Sageworks in Raleigh, is the caliber of the peer group. “They were phenomenal,” Ogle said. “A lot of my best friends are people from there I met at a young age.” That peer group pushed Ogle to excel. He had been pretty good at math at Athens Drive High School in Raleigh but found the coursework and his classmates pushing him very hard. “The combination of being away from home, the rigorous course work and your classmates ... you knew you were learning,” he adds. In addition to his affinity for math, social studies and history classes were also engaging more than before. “There were some very good history teachers there, especially Dr. Wilson,” he remembers. Ogle found an interest in economics at the intersection of math and history and that interest led to his decision to major in Economics at UNC-Chapel Hill. Like Kuo 11 years before him, Ogle saw the decision to attend the school a risk. “At the end of the day I saw the school as a gamble,” he explained. “To go away from home at that age and to leave the peer group I was comfortable with, that felt like a real risk to me.” As he found that he could hold his own with that new peer group, his confidence grew. That helped him develop social skills and prepare for college. Unlike his peers who remember lessons in science, history or taking risks, Ogle’s most memorable experience from the school had

nothing to do with the classroom. He met his high school sweetheart there; she was a student at nearby Riverside High School. They dated through school, got married and recently had their second child. “If I had the chance to talk about the school without mentioning her, I couldn’t go back home,” he says.

Telecommunications: Jud Bowman, Chief Technology

Officer, Motricity: Class of 1999

The tendency of NCSSM graduates to take risks usually shows up during college and afterward during their careers. Jud Bowman, class of 1999, saw no reason to wait that long. “The kids at the school there, myself included, wanted to do something different,” Bowman says during a speech. Something different for Bowman meant creating his own company during summer vacation. Between his junior and senior years (1998), he got the idea for a search engine company simulator. He founded a company with classmate Taylor Brockman called Pinpoint Technologies. The two high school students raised about $1 million in venture capital funding to get the business going. “We wanted to look like a business even though we were seniors in high school,” he explains. “We got an address in New York City and we got a fax machine and a phone number.” The two saw the potential and

postponed college (Brockman had planned to go to N.C. State and Bowman had a scholarship to Stanford). While their classmates studied physics and philosophy and enjoyed football Saturdays, they built their business and survived bumps in the road like having to lay off a number of employees when funding almost dried up. Pinpoint eventually became a leader in the mobile content market and merged with PowerByHand to become Motricity. The company now has more than 300 employees and has sold more than $500 million in mobile content. His exploits in building the company were noticed by the industry and the Triangle business community. Bowman has been named as one of the world’s “Top 100 Young Innovators” by MIT’s Technology Review, along with a slew of local awards. Not bad for an alum who still hasn’t gotten to college. As a legacy from the school, the willingness to question, take risks and look at things differently is evident in a number of ways among the alumni. Among the most unique is one of the books on Murray’s shelf. She has Green Eggs and Ham, the Dr. Seuss classic. The main character’s disdain for the emerald breakfast food crumbles when he finally agrees to question his own beliefs and take a bite. Unlike the main character, alumni from the school willingly chow down on their own, personal green eggs and ham at every opportunity.

“the combination of being away from home, the rigorous course work and your classmates ...

you knew you were learning.”

Publishing an annual report reminds us how fortunate we are to have in our midst individuals, families and

corporations who care so deeply about the NCSSM Foundation. The hundreds of names on the following pages represent far more than a donation. All of the people listed have a specific reason – and perhaps even a personal story – that has motivated them to financially support the foundation. Many of these donors value

their overall experience as students and want to ensure the same for future generations. Others want to preserve the legacy of a beloved teacher or coach. Some have an interest in a particular program and want to see it continue. Because of your support, imagine the

possibilities. And for that we are truly grateful. “As executive director of the NCSSM Foundation, every day I see the impact of private support,” said NCSSM Foundation Executive Director Katie Wagstaff. “Gifts to the foundation play an integral part in the overall mission and goals of the school. From endowment growth to support for programs to annual fund gifts, your continuing kindness makes the NCSSM experience possible. On behalf of the board of directors, I warmly thank you for your gifts to the foundation. You do make a difference.”

In Focus: Steffee Endowment

Perhaps the most important measure of a school’s worth is the place it holds in the hearts of its alumni. And perhaps most indicative of alumni affection is the support they provide a school, years after having walked its halls.

One such NCSSM alumnus is Dr. Craig Steffee ’84, of Farmville, N.C. His 2005-2006 gift to the NCSSM Foundation created the Craig H. Steffee Endowment for Student Research and Creativity.

Like most NCSSM alumni, Dr. Steffee’s days as a student at the School were energetic and fun-filled, recalled with humor and fondness in the years immediately after graduation. As a successful professional, however,

more than 20 years removed from his days on campus, his reflections on his time at NCSSM resulted in a deeper understanding of just how important those two years had really been. “The time that I spent at NCSSM was undoubtedly the most important and formative personal growth experience of my young life,” Dr. Steffee said. “The academic program gave me that solid foundation to build my education and professional life upon, and the nurturing spirit of the school gave me the confidence, courage, self-awareness and passion to explore new areas of interest.”

More confident than ever in the tremendous benefit of an NCSSM education, Dr. Steffee made a decision to help NCSSM do for current and

future students what it had done for him. “I believe that the unique combination of academic preparation and personal development constituting ‘the NCSSM experience’ not only creates students who are ready for active engagement in professional scientific and technological disciplines,” he said, “but also cultivates individuals who are likely to influence thought and to effect beneficial change in the sciences, humanities and public policy. [With my endowment gift], I would like to encourage and foster such opportunities for current and future NCSSM students, and to give back to the School some small fraction of the gift that my NCSSM experience has been to me.”

In Focus: RECAp and North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline foundation

At the core of NCSSM is the opportunity for each student to participate in research. Though not every NCSSM graduate will pursue a career involving detailed exploration of the physical world/life or mathematical sciences, the School still feels that one of the keys to leading a successful and productive life is the ability to effectively ask questions, seek answers, and interpret the results, regardless of the chosen discipline.

More often than not, the most intensive research carried out by NCSSM students is, in fact, of a detailed scientific nature.

Quite often that research is in addition to, or outside of, the typical academic day. Funding for those research experiences has to come from outside sources, most notably in the form of corporate of foundation gifts.

One such research program funded in 2005-2006 by an outside source is Research Experience in Chemistry, Astronomy, and Physics (RECAP), a collaborative effort with UNC-Chapel Hill and funded in its entirety by the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation. Through RECAP, 12 students (six from NCSSM and six from other

schools) participated in three weeks of summer research, either at NCSSM or UNC-Chapel Hill. The students conducting this research got to work closely with professionals from the science departments of those schools.

Thanks to the generous support of NCSSM programs by organizations like the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation, incredible opportunities such as RECAP are readily available to students who demonstrate the ability and desire to look far below the surface.

W ith the first 25 classes graduated and out making their impact

on the world, the grand experiment has reached a new plateau. Each of us is an integral part of that success and should be proud of the part we played in the history of NCSSM.

Whether you know who Spaceman Spiff is, can hum the Weird Science song, still get a special thrill watching “Revenge of the Nerds” (even though it’s the 43rd time you’ve seen it on Comedy Central), or are even a bona-fide rocket scientist, you are an NCSSM graduate and a member of a very special community – a community that defies easy explanation.

For all of us, our two years at Science and Math came at a very formative time in our lives and I have found in talking with many in the alumni population that these two years have forged a bond stronger than those formed with our universities or places of work. We recognize the importance and the impact of the faculty and the staff on our early adulthood. Many of us also recognize the impact we have had on one another – the relationships we formed with our seniors, our juniors, and our own classes have lasted over many years, and for more than you might expect, resulted in matrimonial arrangements. There are even now, this year, children of NCSSM graduates attending the School as students. I am absolutely convinced that J.K. Rowling must have studied NCSSM as she wrote the initial drafts of Hogwarts. The stairs don’t move around between Bryan and Beall, but literary license aside, there are way too many similarities.

I have struggled to find the words to describe our community, the relationship we have with one another, the instant bond we feel when we discover another NCSSM-er in our midst. There is a level of credibility, of trust, and of competence. In other words, we are all members of the “Old

Nerd Network.” And as members of that network, we have vast resources at our disposal. Web 2.0 concepts in social networking and crowd-sourcing become force multipliers when we think about tapping into the collective experience and intelligence of the NCSSM alumni population.

Alumni Connections (www.ncssmalumni.com) has been established to allow us to network with one another in a trusted environment and I encourage all of you to take advantage of it. Whether we are moving to a new city, looking to fill a key role in our company, gaining insight on a new technology or industry or simply floating an idea, we can tap into the Old Nerd Network.

In closing, I’d like to share with you the first stanza of the State Toast of North Carolina:

Here’s to the land of the Long Leaf Pine, The summer Land where the sun doth shine,

Where the weak grow strong and the strong grow great,

Here’s to “Down Home,” the Old North State!-adopted by the General Assembly (Session Laws

1957, c777)

With over a quarter century of academic success and nearly one hundred years of living and learning on the patch of ground in Durham bordered by West Club Boulevard and Broad Street, let us rededicate ourselves to our collective success – as alumni and as living proof of Governor Hunt, Governor Sanford and John Ehle’s vision.

Let’s continue to challenge and support one another, as we grow great as a community together!

Yours at NCSSM,

Michael Martine ’87President, Alumni Association 2006-2008

Last June, the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics reached a milestone when it graduated its 25th class. Board of Trustee Chairman T.

Brock Winslow ’86 accepted 305 members of the Class of 2006 under the shady oaks on the School’s historic Watts lawn with more than 2,000 members of the NCSSM community present.

Keynote speaker Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski III, president of the University of Maryland Baltimore County, addressed the class with words of encouragement and wisdom. Dr. Hrabowski is recognized nationally for his research and publications on the importance of science and math education and for his commitment to improving educational opportunities for minority students.

Since 1980, NCSSM has been preparing students to become leaders in North Carolina, and, indeed, the world. Naturally, after a quarter-century of educating the best and brightest minds in our state, NCSSM has undergone many changes, from policies to technology to building renovations to leadership. But like many before them, members of the class of 2006 are ready to accept the challenges life throws their way.

We are proud to welcome NCSSM’s 25th graduating class to our alumni community and wish its members the best in their future endeavors. On the following page, find highlights covering the many accomplishments of the Class of 2006.
